Wrong.
Line thickness was all they had to convey overlap and light in cartoons - until fairly recently (like the 90’s). They werent random about it. At all. It also had to be a convention because of all the people working on it.
Maybe a self expressy cartoonie aesthetic would fly in some (Indie) comics, but even then inkers had conventions and pencillers had to know what they were. Manga may have been different. But then a lot of it is shitty quality. The Manga pros (see Urusawa for example) still used conventions because they communicate certain things even even if the viewer isnt aware of it.

Im not trying to shit on you guys and you can do what you want. But if you aspire to work in an industry with teams etc you should make a pointnof learning any and all conventions and standards that are commonly in use.

I don't. And I stand by my statement that there are no rules. Because, literally, there aren't, I've never seen any kind of linework and thought "those line weights are wrong." I've thought lines have looked shitty but it always comes down to plain bad drawing, fundamentally flawed structure. What's with this board and all its made-up rules.

Just to clarify, since I might come across as dismissive: no, you should never do things randomly. But obsessing over details like line thickness is one of those things /ic/ does that's always irked me. Like worrying about what order to learn fundamentals in. This stuff is not going to matter that much if you conscientiously focus on the larger picture of getting better. Of course if you're on a team and there's a house style or rulebook, stick to it. That goes without saying. But don't stress over the minutiae of drawing while learning.

I'll usually just zoom out and if my piece reads nicely from a distance without all the lines being the same thickness i know the lineart's decent enough, and if it doesnt I'll tweak it until it does.
