No, I started out with grinding and it made me hate drawing. I haven't done a real "exercise" in 3 years, but I think I'm starting to be ready for that again. Never take advice on a studying schedule from /ic/ and don't mindlessly grind, just study things you need for something specific instead of studying for the sake of studying.

>> No.4395873

thoughtful grinding is hard and painful, so much easier to just mindlessly grind

>> No.4395874

People in here grind without using it as a tool to create the image in the mind. Stop blaming fundies and blame your own philosophy.

I don’t get how someone like Rapoza was able to become an artist. He didn’t seem particularly smart or anything. I mean the guy got sacked for stealing.

The technical side of art isn't so mystical, anyone can learn barring mental retardation I believe given the right learning resources and dedicated practice. The field of drawing is really quite logical and practical, it's just surrounded by a lot of mystique and there's a lot of bad advice and instruction floating around that gets in the way of the real stuff.

Honestly, him being 'not that smart' is probably why I like Rapoza so much. He's not a genius but he's fun, relateable, and down to earth even though he's really good at what he does. He draws all the dumb stuff that he likes to draw and isn't even remotely pretentious. I mean, he's drawing this absolutely vulgar and retarded Garfield parody right now and I love him for it because it's just so gosh darned stupid.

Your point makes sense, I managed to understand the fundamentals in a matter of months rather than years. I even think it is possible to be able to apply the fundamentals in a matter of days.

Yeah, I started taking art really seriously and aimed for 2+ hours today regardless of how I felt and I started to hate it. Might have burnt out.

Not sure it means I'm cut out for it, or I'm just a lazy fuck.

>2+ hours

>Taking art seriously

Definitely not cut out for it. Shit man, what are you expecting if you have no passion for experimentation and learning?
You'll be doing that stuff throughout your whole artistic life, even after spending a hundred hours getting a grasp on your basic fundies. You have to be in a constant state of trying to improve if you want your skills to go anywhere, or if you ever want to be genuinely proud of something you make even for a few moments

I could only invest myself for grinding after mindlessly drawing for fun for many years, and even now I spend a lot of time drawing for fun and working from imagination. I have a hard time believing many people can just start grinding, following something like the aguri guide, and become pro-tier mainly because I don't think many people can force themselves to do such rote, mindless studies over a long term and effectively learn from them. Alternating drawing for fun with grinding my problem areas, then applying those studies is most effective imho.

>> No.4397319

You are delusional if you think Dave is not smart, there is more to him than what he gives out. Judge him by his results not by his banters. Try with any luck to paint or draw like he does and you will see it yourself, it takes much more than simple advice, or practice. It looks easy but its not.

This to infinity and beyond.
Drawing just has to be a thing you do, a habit, the way you express yourself. Exploring and learning should be enjoyable and engrossing even if it does get frustrating sometimes.
That doesn't mean don't improve or self-crit, but an attitude of "I'll keep drawing anyway, whether I'm good or not" coupled with strong, healthy self-criticism and desire to learn is what will ultimately determine whether you make it or not. Minimizing the discouragement that keeps you from drawing and maximizing the incentive that keeps you doing it.

>> No.4397465

Retarded advice.

How to git gud at drawing in 5 easy steps
1. draw something
2. identify the parts that look like shit
3. (optional pro tier master strategy) do research to learn why those parts look like shit and how to draw them properly
4. draw it again but do something different than last time
5. repeat until none of it looks like shit

That's not grinding. Theoretically, you could draw ONE piece and then study it closely enough and with enough focus that the second piece you draw is perfect. Of course that's not going to happen because drawing covers so much ground that no one piece contains all the skills required and so no one piece can reveal everything you're shit at.

The higher your IQ, the faster you'll be able to identify what looks like shit and why it looks like shit and you'll be faster at identifying the fixes - so, consequently, the less practice you need to put in. This is what people mean by "talent" most of the time. Most people aren't talented, they're just smart - and would be good at pretty much anything they do.

The OP pic really says to do grinding for a really limited part of the day and applying right after that. If you have little time, then just make the fundies part smaller, like 1/4 of your total time drawing.
