Post paintings, drawings, pastels, sculptures, or any other art done in physical media for critique, or questions about making traditional art, etc.

THIS IS NOT an inspiration thread, this is your own work that you've done.

Anyone have any watercolor resources, whether books or YouTube, that they have found useful? Sometimes I feel like I'm getting it and then just regress to shit.

>> No.4377571

>>4377541
I cant recommend any resourced, but what might get you loosened up is working in ink washes for a little bit. Really the more practice you have in any medium in greyscale the better you'll be once you move to color. I'd say 70% of all work you do should be in grey, black, and white.

Thanks, something I've struggled with is identifying the base value of colors when working in monochrome. I think it's something I really need to do considering you're not the first to tell me that.

As I dont have any loose ink currently (just pocket brush), do you think theres still value in doing the exercise with neutral tinted or some other color?
If using another color, should I just be using the same color with increasing opacity or add tint for the darks? I ask because I've read advice against the latter but I have trouble getting deep darks without it.
Disregard if I'm being too spoonfeedmeey. I just dont want to be waiting time when I paint.

you'll get the same practice using a Prussian blue or burnt umber watercolor, as long as you can get close to a full value range out of it.

colors really pop on it, I think the bright areas are kind of overpowering the shadows on the woman though, you need to try to desaturate the shadows a bit more, because everything on her body is a color right now, there's nothing receding in space, it's all jumping forward.

thankee bruv. I'll take that under consideration next time. I'm pretty new with oil & color so I'm flying by the seat of my pants a little, just trying to make sure I get values and form correct and otherwise relatively ignoring color as long as it's in the ballpark.

>it was in a different position during the block-in than for the entire rest of the time
something that helps for that is thinking of the moved body part in terms of the symbols for it if you have to repaint it. Visualize the word "Hand" or "Fingers" while you paint it, because you've already painted the hand from reference, so you theoretically know how to paint a hand from imagination as well. That information is in you, you just need to trick yourself into manifesting it on the canvas.

Here's a quick figure drawing I did today using that method, the actually trick is to visualize the symbols of what you are drawing or painting while you are drawing or painting it. So if you're looking at a knee, you internalize the word "knee" and put your whole energy into painting a "knee" as you know it. A lot of figure drawing is self-evident, and requires a slight amount of thinking to bring that knowledge to the surface.

This is the only one I have handy rn, it's a plein air box I made myself out of a cigar box. The palette box on the left is a joybest airtight palette I got on Amazon for $10 (transon also makes an identical one for $12) and the 2 water containers are from Nalgene (bought them at a local art store).

As for the box itself, I removed the hinges on the back and replaced them with two torque hinges that can be tightened so they can hold the lid at any angle and I added a clamp on the front to keep it closed (also got it from Amazon in a pack of like 25 or something). I added 4 L shaped bracket things from Lowe's at the bottom so they can hold a piece of wood that I cut to a specific size so it can fit inside the lid of the box when it's closed. I then added a square piece of wood at the bottom of the box (on the inside, same thickness as the plank on the left) to add thickness to it so I could screw a 1/4" T Nut on the underside to screw in the quick release tripod plate. And lastly I bought a sheet of acrylic that I cut to fit the inside of the box and spray painted with matte gray paint on the back. I also glued 4 small bits of wood on the inner corners of the box, just a little shorter than the height of the bottom of the box so I can rest the acrylic palette on top of them without it sinking down.

Hope that helps!

I took inspiration from Tad Retz's plein air boxes, so you can just buy those instead of you don't feel like making one yourself, I just wanted to learn how to make them so I could have them in any size I wanted.

This is yesterday's painting that I have begun. It really captures the mood somehow, I don't know how. I'm using a new medium to mix the oil and it will take a long time to dry in order to paint in the windswept greying hair, the mournful eyes, the wintery trees, the knap of the coat, the evergreen leaves, the asphalt road and markings. I'm happy it's how I feel and art does that sometimes.

It's to do with the covid-19 illness, and environmentalism and air pollution and the trees that were all cut down. That sort of thing. The modern dystopia. But it's also like that game isn't it? Borderlands. Like, we're living in fallout III already. I'm partly inspired by a Gauguin painting and it's just him in this landscape and his colors are incredible. You can see the precursor to the Nabis in it. I think he does actually mention Bonnard in his book 'ramblings of a wannabe painter' available from David Zwirner Books. I was walking up and down the high Road in my mask and people were like 'oh my God! ' from their cars and I'm like "yeah mate, here comes the plague, read the book". I thought life would get better (you remember I did the fairy painting? You bastards) now it's just International disaster after another. you just can't make purple, blue, and green in any meaningful way... to me it's the color palette of European skin tones, but brown and black skin is more easily recreated with blues (reflections), greens (midtones) purples (shadows) and orange/red/yellow (highlights). Without a full palette of colors that can make that spectrum you'll never be fully prepared for portraiture of any subject. If you live in Europe in the late 1800s Zorn Palette's gonna be great for your subject matter, but it's just not the reality of the world we live in now.

I'm not saying this, btw, because you'll be painting a lot of black people, but black people have money, black people commission paintings, if a black person pays you to paint them and you show up with Red, Yellow, and Black paint they'll want their money back.

What a load of crapola. One of the newest acquisitions at London's Nat PG has this picture from 1839. The restrained palette works well for any skin, if you're a great artist, of course. Otherwise, take recourse in your brighter pigments, if you feel the need to be propped up.

you're a nobody, so the time invested becomes more important

so if you spent 20+ hours on this, we can reasonably consider minimum wage plus material cost
but if you're *somebody*, we can consider a lot more--note that being "someone" doesn't always imply fame, but also implies critical thinking and how complex the piece is

so looking at these there's a lot of simplicity, meaning that even i can reproduce such a painting, but there's also a degree of "uniqueness"

so, >>4406545 is okay, >>4406550 is much worse

SO, and BUT, both pieces aren't very interesting--nothing really makes me question reality or nature or anything, they're just "cool" brush strokes. therefore, far from $800

About colours.. its a colours study. Looking back at it, I'm proud about the neon green interacting with blue and white. Pink to an extent.

It was not meant to have a composition. it was a background and a flower (I think?)

This is one of your problems, right here.

What is skill? If I picked up a violin and drew the bow across, could you tell the difference between me-anon who does not play, does not put in thousands of hours trying to learn and better myself on the instrument, compared to the 1st violin of an orchestra? I paint still lives in one hour, Seago painted whole landscapes in oil in an hour while entertaining guests at a dinner party, so what is your point? Skill in art is judged by the quality of the work you put out. Except for all those money launderers that buy abstract art of course. But fine art requires skill.

If I want to receive feelings looking at a painting, I will look at a Singer Sargent, a Velasquez, or Holbein. Your picture doesn't make me feel anything, you don't even know what it is meant to be of, it's some muddy looking colours that look like a child swished them in approximately 10 seconds.

>I want to learn oil

That's nice, it's a fine art. But if you've never had any affinity with the fine arts before try looking at drawing videos on youtube first. If you find drawing boring then you won;t have wasted money on paints, because it's even harder to capture something when you factor colour in. I just rebutt a little bit. I think in violin there is no shortcut, but in art there might be (money launder or not) there MIGHT be people who just started yesterday and found a niche and made "art" literally throwing paint at a canvas, which made people feel something.

I'm not saying I'm one. I just really like what I did. I like it I mean I hanged one of them on top of my bed and it's really what I love to wake up to. Maybe if replicated, others would like it on their bed too.

Good luck with your learning. I'm sure if you keep it up you will realise that the longer you do this, the harder it gets. People that throw paint on canvases, maybe you're thinking of Pollock, they only made money because it behove the art 'scene' at the time to make someone like him a star, He still drank himself into deep depression all the time. Also, I find it helps a lot for practice to make the pencil drawing super loose and useless, so you actually have to think and draw in ink. If you're just tracing your pencils in ink, it's going to look traced, which looks bad.

What do you guys use for plein air sketching? Ive been using (unsuccessfully) acrylic and I fucking hate the drying time. It's impossible to get subtle tones when my paint dries before I've even finished mixing it. I got the winsor Newton Cotman watercolors when I first started but I found it difficult to control and get darks. I was considering getting a few tubes of artist grade watercolor and some white guache, would that make a difference or are pans fine and I'm just bad? Important thing I realized today.. traditional art is 3d and also the paint reflects light in a different way in real life.

In digital art, if you print it out you don't get the 3d effect if you lay down layers of paint and sunlight drops on it.

Digital art is stationary. Traditional art changes depending on where you hang it, what kind of light you shine on it, or the weather today (or your mood - but arguably digital also)
