It's time to flex those brainiums, bust out those construction drawing skills, and sift through them visual libraries because in this thread we don't use any reference besides memory and RAW! BRAIN! POWER!

Post art you made using absolutely no reference. Anything from imagination. From sketches to drawings to full-blown paintings.

SUPER HARDCORE BONUS ROUND: The ultimate test- draw with no erasing or undos, Kim Jung Gi style. We'll just have to take your word for it if you're drawing digitally. You better not be lying, because that wouldn't be very nice, now would it?

for me, drawing from ref for the sake of copying it does nothing for me
when I want to draw something, I find many refs, preferably a 3d model and try to memorize the 3d object how it looks like
so basically you want to have like a rotatable preview inside your head

so in short what I do is always draw from imagination using things I have observed on references

Loomis, Bridgman, Hogarth, Vilppu. I can name a few. But what it all boils down to is a strong foundation of construction drawing.
If you can draw a simple solid like a box in perspective, you can draw a figure made of simple solids in perspective.
The fun doesn't stop there, of course. If you can draw primitives, you can draw organic and more complex forms in perspective. Which means you can literally translate the human body, bones and muscles, into these forms and memorize them. Once you memorize the figure you can change the proportions and stylize it in practically infinite ways. And each thing you learn makes it easier to learn other stuff. Memorize the human body, you can memorize, say, a tiger. Then you can make a tiger man. You don't have to know the anatomy down to the individual vertebrae, but so long as you have a good idea of the subject and can break it down into simpler, memorizeable, and repeatable solid forms, then you can draw literally anything.

Erasing is for cock gobblers - inks only

All my training from this week doing figure drawing and spidey studies so I that can draw a spider-gwen sans reference.

I might color the creature thing later, he’s a blob of high frequency noise that doesn’t read well. I wanted to draw a dr oc, but I’d have to look up a reference. I also forgot what an octopus looks like, so I drew a tentacle monster.

I meant to flip the one by her butt, but I was on autopilot inking and I forgot.

There are lots of little visual tangents and accidental size uniformities that are hard to dodge. Like the octopus skin doesn't have enough heterogeneity in the scale size so there is no flow to the tips. I wanted lots of texture on the tips but they look over shaded. The eyes are the same size as the suckers and have a similar darkened center so they are hard to distinguish. The teeth are too uniform in size so they look boring.

I enjoyed the exercise, imagination is fun, but it needs more careful planning.

For me it's not like I'm photobashing and then using that as my reference, but if you're drawing and something looks a little funky, you know what'll fix that when your visual library is lacking? A reference. For sketches I normally don't bother, but finished illustrations references help with things I'm not as experienced drawing.

from my observation there are artist that lack fundamentals but can create weird shit that are somehow aesthetically pleasing.

and then there are artist that are technically almost perfect can copy anything they see BUT they have a hard time coming up with something creative.

you need to balance both. it's not something you do after the other. it's something that supports each other.

I got kicked out of last thread for using reference on a non- essential part of the image. So here's something I've been working on, no ref. And it shows. This project will probably be scrapped.

referenceless is great for sketching but the moment you get to rendering something out, it all goes in the shitter. There are so many things wrong that are just piling up, and If I don't pick out reference for specific shapes and species, this painting will crash and burn. Since the painting's strength lies more in it's potential than anything I've actually put there.

There seems to be an undercurrent of elitism when it comes to this. If I'm aware I don't have an eidetic memory, why intentionally gimp myself and my work just to have the personal solace that I didn't look up how a hawk wing works

just a weird thought I had, reading through responses in the last thread

I agree with pretty much all of this. I Don’t think drawing from imagination, and especially skipping the sketch/underdrawing phase adds anything to a piece. However, I do think the act of drawing without reference, being able to dive into a piece with a clear image in your head and complete confidence in your ability to create it is one of the most satisfying feelings out there. It’s not something to brag about, just enjoy it if you can.

i dont think grass would reflect light like that but I like the visual
maybe try adding some finer details like grass, house textures, or some more thinner varied branches
or alternatively you could play into the atmosphere, maybe add more clouds, blur sharper edges and go for something more abstract
as it is, it feels like its somewhere in between abstract and linear

this is funny

I used to have a lot of imagination, like I was crazy and made great doodles and come up with awesome concepts, but as I got older it all just... idk, it went away although I believe it's actually asleep

I've always loved drawing and I still draw quite frequently (main reason why I visit this board), I've gotten amateur-tier good, nothing special but now that since quite a few years I am a lawyer and thus a busy man I cannot fucking draw something with a soul anymore and yes, I cannot masturbate from memory/imagination either.

Sometimes my imagination/soul comes back and I do/draw/write and/or think something really cool, but like only twice a year n shit.

How do I fix my soul anons?

By drawing consistently. Drawing has to become a part of you and how you express yourself, how you think and feel, and what interests you. The more you explore by drawing, the more you will foster that spirit of imagination in yourself.

The abstracts are interesting. I'd really like to see what you could do with it after learning construction drawing and perspective. There's a whole new dimension to implement those mind-screwy visuals in. Check out Tradd Moore's trippy abstracted visuals in Silver Surfer Black, it's amazing.
>>4369873
Don't worry about it, it comes with practice. I would suggest learning to sketch using an ink pen or ballpoint, it increases your accuracy and line confidence tons.
And for what it's worth, you did quite well. The arms are off but it's simply a matter of more study and practice to get them right.

No elitism intended at all. And nothing wrong with reference either, can't draw something if the shelves in your visual library are empty after all. But the better your imagination drawing skills are the better you can interpret, remix, and even memorize reference. It makes you more versatile and efficient.
On the subject of eidetic memory and (by extension) visualisation, I don't think they're strictly necessary. Salgood Sam is aphantasic (can't visualize) but he can draw stuff from memory and imagination just as well as you or I can. In fact, if I'm drawing something I'm familiar with or inventing something on the fly I don't visualize images in my head much or even at all. Come to think of it, when I'm studying ref I don't either, I try to figure out its structure by breaking it down and drawing it from different angles, doing different things, etc. Or if I'm trying to figure out what a character should be doing to complete an action, like brushing hair for example, I'll mimic the action myself and then draw it.
That's not to say I can't or don't visualize at all, but drawing is more akin to something like touch to me, and cause and effect. Like I just know, if this body part is such and such way, the bones and muscle masses (that I'm familiar with anyways, my anatomy knowledge is pretty shoddy, heh) are going to always be in a certain position on that part. Or if I'm making something up and noodling around, like a building or something, I'll just stick forms together, or put them on top of other things. Sort of like building stuff with blocks, except more freeform.
One of the main reasons I made this thread is because the process of imagination drawing is endlessly fascinating to me. If I ever do this thread again I think I'll make it oriented towards that subject instead of it just being a "no reference" thread.

It is, but there are some small anatomy issues. Back legs and the wings, you can tell he was unsure of. From reading anatomy tutorials before about bird wings, they really don't work that way, and they aren't properly connected to the body with bones and muscles. He got really far with imagination and memory alone, though.
