COM-for-ta-ble.
Just as you should be able to tell real art from cartoons. It's ok to enjoy cartoons sometimes, but to call them art is an entirely different matter.
Western art is not obsessed with ugliness and suffering, any competent person would know that. Romans and Greeks kept searching the true nature of beauty through the shape of the human body. Pre-Raphaelites and Romantic painters alike drew a lot from classical art and managed to convey sublime through landscapes and nature.
"The west" includes so many cultures and so many centuries of art movements, it's just a rough generalization.
Actual japanese art tends to be much more violent in content and far uglier in style than most of European art.
