You ink and then watercolor or vice versa? When it comes to mixing those two, I worry about destroying all the lineart if I paint over it or the paint having messed up the surface too much for pens to work well and make clean lines if I were to try to ink second.

At first I though they did the lines using some sort of dry brush for anime linework like in the golden age of american animation. Later I found out they just photocopied pencil lines into the cels to save time.
Like I said, maybe it's just me, but it takes away a little bit of the magic knowing the same effect can be replicated with a common copy machine.

Last summer I started my project to practice drawing. I do 20-30 minutes a night five to six nights a week. I'm not sure exactly what you guys mean by "make it", I mostly just want to be more well rounded as a person. I hope this is the right thread to post my progress in.

I'm mostly following the guide from the sticky, so I started out with Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I took a break somewhere in the middle and did some other studies, the first chapter from Keys to Drawing, and the heads section of Fun With a Pencil.

This is from the first exercise that Right Side asks its reader to do. I think I spent about 15 minutes on it.

I've been keeping rough track and I think I've spent about 45 hours drawing since then. About half my HB pencil and 75 pages from my sketchbook are gone.

I don't think I'm good enough yet to even need critique. I can myself see many flaws both technical and observational. Not that I'd mind feedback. But I'm going to keep plugging away at my stack of books and other exercises regardless.

Actually wait, I probably don't have the schedule flexibility to get into a life drawing class or studio space. How bad is it to try and practice anatomy from pictures and videos, and work on my observational skills with still lifes?

Thanks. I could do a long answer with how I study and what my routine is if you want, but it might sound like a bunch of bullshit as I heavily believe your own mentality is an important factor in creating art. My stuff is far less technical in conception then anything I've seen on here honestly.
But the short of it is I tend to emulate artists I admire. I mostly ignore anatomy in favor of what feels "right" and I've ignored every other aspect of art. e.g, colour, technique, backgrounds, realism etc. In favor of strengthening my character art. Because I enjoy looking at and drawing cute girls and only really want to do black and white comics in the future.

I started drawing digitally around two years ago which is also when I started taking drawing seriously, hence buying a tablet. Up until then I'd doodle a lot when I was bored but that was really the extent of it. Was and am still poor so I started drawing really bad porn. Still kind of do but it's not my main focus right now.

I don't draw every day but I am constantly thinking about what I'd like to draw and how I'd do it so when I get back to my tablet (Wacom Cintique Pro) I can dive right in. I don't really look at tutorials or read any books which I should be doing but I'm too lazy. The most I do is bring up references when drawing.
This seems like simple stuff but I see people on here who are unable to visualise original ideas and who don't use refs when drawing. The former of which is fine-ish if you're striving for realism but that ain't me chief.
I understand fully the importance of realism but I personally don't see the point in replicating something perfectly that I can already see with a google search and I want to develop stories so stylization was the way to go. I also follow a bunch of artists I admire who are good at expression, posing and anatomy.

This is where the "Mentality" part comes in. Firstly Some artists don't take criticism. Some don't even criticise their own work from what I've seen. Without it I wouldn't know my limits and what I need to improve. Secondly I don't care who you are or what you want to draw. Basic anatomy is key to drawing even anime girls. You have to know the rules to bend them. Some people refuse to accept this and never develop because of it. This goes for shape design, form and all that Jazz. And Lastly, have an idea of what you want to do. I spent so long in the void, drawing for the sake of getting better. Which is fine, but you have to eventually think about what you want to do once you've reached your ideal level of skill.

I'd also go on to say that I consume a ton of various different media. Movies, shows, anime, manga etc. Get into the mindset of analysing the characters you see on screen. What makes them work, their colours. Why can they look so cartoony without being repulsive. And if they do, how would you draw it? All important. Eventually you will build up a feeling for character design and things that appeal to you.

Your horse sketches are really nice. I like the thumbnails. You're onto something good there -- it seems like you enjoyed drawing them.
Your humans are good too. You have a great grasp on form. There are proportion issues here and there, which I'm not so worried about because those almost always solve themselves with mileage. Take a leap and start drawing from imagination asap. When you draw from reference, the solution is presented to you. From imagination you have to find solutions yourself, which is where you really learn. You won't like it as much as your referenced drawings, but in the long run it will get you farther faster.

There's potential, but still lots to do. Right now your style is somewhere between wanting to be realistic and cartoony, either embrace the stylized look with the outlines, or go full painterly and get rid of the outlines.

Your rendering also needs work, lots of pillow shading going on. Learn to simplify details where it's not necessary, your focus is the houses so the mountains in the background shouldn't be so detailed. Too much detail all over is distracting.

But your colors are nice and you have an understanding of how light and color work, which is important. Keep at it, you can get there

it's mostly mileage + occasional studies from life. if im [absolutely] aimless, i might skim through a hampton or loomis pdf, but that's pretty rare. i just don't have the attention span.
but really, 90% mileage. it doesn't matter the material if you don't apply it consistently.

i think that applying new information to your art is like breaking in a fresh pair of shoes. it's uncomfortable, and no amount of prying with your hands will soften up those heels. but you'll never get comfortable in them if you don't put in the miles. i hope this makes sense

There's a lot of very objective rules to what humans find appealing. Like-- patterns, certain kinds of shapes, certain ways to achieve simplification and gestalt, etc. Good designers know these rules, and can use them to create visually appealing images or products.

Art and design is visual commumication, so learning art is like learning to write-- you need to learn the rules of language before you can start learning what makes a good story.
That's why I'd strongly recommend getting good at the language of art-- that is, the fundamentals like light, perspective, anatomy, lines, gesture. Those are kind of like the spelling, handwriting, and grammar. THEN, you can move on to learning how to write appealing stories-- that is, learning design.

The eyes don't match, as expected, though the one on the left doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. The one on the right is very off in terms of position, size, length, and line quality overall.

There's also some vagueness in the linework, but I guess a lot of that is because I didn't erase my underlying sketch. Also I moved the lips down a bit.
