Are there any good guides/artbooks/tutorials/advice for drawing robotics?

I'm a huge mecha fan but trying to recreate or draw my own designs has always felt daunting to me. I can hardly keep the geometry consistent or imagine the fully thing in my head. Not to mention how to go about shading/coloring them.

It's entirely a shape design + visual library thing
Do a bunch of drawings from references of all your favorite mechas and a bunch of studies of military vehicles, motorcycles, planes, helicopters, factory robotics, powertools, cars, boats, etc... and you will certainly have your brain filled with plenty of good ideas for shapes and technical looking details

I see.

Any does anyone know of some good places to find high quality images of military equipment, factory stuff, vehicles, etc?

Sifting through google and finding low res or super watermarked images seems like quite the chore.

This, Shape design will give you the tools to create interesting foundation for your design, drawing machinery of the kind that you like day in day out will develop your visual library so that you know how to fill in the details in your design.

Use pinterest for reference, it's really an invaluable resource, they have high quality images and the algorithm will recommend you more and more reference close to what you want to design all the time.

Are there any particularly noteworthy mecha/robotics western artists?

Seems like most artists I find with a passion for this are japanese/Korean.

I don’t know any artists in particular, but the video game “Hearthstone” has a class of mechs and a lot of the artwork there is very well made. Here’s one. I’m interested in drawing mechs as well and I think a lot of hearthstone’s card art could be good inspiration

Personally not a fan of magical mecha designs that allow for things to just kinda float.

To me the appeal of a mecha/robot design is how all the shapes, angles, etc fit together. Some artists kind of avoid all that when it comes to robot designs likely because of the amount of internal geometry required.

Study artists with shape design you like
Save up a big visual library (along with references)
Do lots of thumbnailing + references for everything from overall designs to tiny details

and dont forget to have fun

Tbf it's mostly the newer mechs which are floaty magic constructions. The ones from the GvG expansion are more like pic related.
