You have the right ideas but the face is horrible
Its not just western, it's rather misguided.

Make a study of an animoo face from a reference either an official art or a really good fanart from a good artist that enhances the original style.

IMO you should draw more from reference, try to copy exactly what you're seeing to get the style. The anatomy is going to get better with time, mine is also not that good too, but when you copy you absorb some of what makes the image look good.

Like when you're learning guitar, you don't jump straight into making your own songs, that would be kinda dumb wouldn't it? Try to think about drawing more like music, you need to grind to get better.

Tried doing a drawover your skeleton and fixed some proportion things I saw, hope it helps some way.

Well, it depends on who you want to appeal to see which technique you'll use, as you said not everyone finds all art nice. Saying you like Kim, I can see your inspirations there in your drawing. Now think about what's different between your piece, and Kim's art, which is probably one of your goals if not THE goal.
Now I say you need to go through the whole learning process first mate, you're kinda jumping the shark here, think about what's different between Kim's drawing and yours; for starters, the detail.
As your drawing stands, it needs contrast. For example detail the clothes on the girl (I assume it's a kimono showing one breast?) But leave her skin white. And also detail the mannequin behind the guy on the left. To make some contrast between the humans and clothes / machines.

That's just an example, you might find something different by looking at Kim's work, and think of a different way to improve your piece.
But don't neglect your training, it's hard to make something appealing without the bases but it's nice to have fun every once in a while.
Kim can draw an old fat guy eating ice cream and make it appealing because he's trained his drawing a lot.

your proportions seem somewhat based on realism. there doesnt appear to be any deliberate stylistic distortion to basic anatomical structures. the face seems stylized somewhat asian-influenced. the only thing that really bothers me is her right hand and fingers. you have an eye for anatomy, you just need your understanding of hands to catch up... all in all, it’s not bad.

>> No.4318727

yeah but i doubt anybody here actually wants to become a mangaka or work in a legit anime studio. most people here aim for freelance work like commissions (portraits, illustrations, OCs, porn etc) and setting up a patreon/gumroad. Times have changed, you no longer need a "real" job to make it. The key is getting a following so even if one client doesnt pay you that much, a large group of these clients will give you a lot of money.

I agree that anime is much less "flexible" so you wont get commissioned for books, editorials, social media, whatever. But I cannot deny the fact that a lot of online anime artists make a lot of money and the only people that would ridicule them are some old men from a traditional art college.

I personally think you should just go to the basics and trying to use what you learned. Even if you are a bit better at drawing, you always need to keep polishing your basics, the grind is basically never over. Maybe looking at references might help

To you too, just use references, it helps you practice, but it's usually more fun than grinding gestures and shit and you can use some of your own creativity.
Nonetheless, you should still go do the basics once in a while, it really helps. Plus if you feel stuck, compare your previous artwork with your newer ones, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment

The problem is that any kind of dumb nigger can critique anything. Saying things like "your perspective is off" or "work on your anatomy" may apply to almost everything anyone does except for masters, so it's like a blank critique that retards use to feel better about themselves.

As this is an annonymous board, the only way to work around this would be if every critique came with a redline OR the poster posted his work with his critique. Because crabs don't actually draw, this would never happen though.

>its just not as easy to replicate for a beginner
I know, I had a lot of frustrations with that as well.

I think at your stage too much "no do it this way" can actually be counter-productive and make you think that there is some magic approach and you're just not doing it right.

Despite that let me go a bit more in depth.
The best thing you can prbly do is focus on one aspect like rhytm for example and try to work on that for 2 weeks and if you feel like you're not getting anywhere move on to the next thing and try that for 2 weeks.

Your top row is too messy, it's fine to do things loosely but you should try to do that with purpose.
For example describing the entire outstretched leg with one flowing "s" curve.
In my opinion scribbly lines break the flow more than they describe it, I'm therefore not a fan of such an approach.

In your bottom row you're trying to be more clean and controlled, however the lines lack purpose/ descriptive quality.
It's like you're picking some contour lines arbitrarily and leaving others out, sort of like you're trying to create a "connect the dots" worksheet for kids.
This anon : >>4316879 posted a good image from hampton, in the first image under the "Head ICS" text It shows opposite curves flowing into one another creating a rythm and to the right of that the concept applied to the figure.
If you're unsure where to place your lines trying to understand that rythm that leads the eye through the figure will help you out.

No, not just.
Contours are the outer details, gesture is the flow / relationship of the forms.
The overall flow is still there.
When someone says "you're drawing the contour and not the gesture" what they mean is that you're drawing the outer details while ignoring the overall flow.

>I don't see any real lines going over the form (wrapping lines)
I don't know what you're talking about, they're absolutely there. Perhaps not plastered absolutely everywhere where I could have possibly placed them, but these where timed so I like to be economical.

>and in a few of them you also leave out the contour.
You're prbly talking about the first 1min ones, which means I probably didn't have the time and focused on the (for gesture) important bits first, which is flow and rythm.

I absolutely suck at anime facial anatomy but I'm hoping that drawing from a different angle disguised that a bit. Any advice on getting it right (or recommendations on textbooks for real or anime anatomy) would be appreciated.

I also need to practice the fundamentals more and stop drawing weeb trash. But weeb trash flows out of my head more often than the things I should be practicing, so even though I'm having fun I feel like I'm not really improving on a technical level. Is there a middle ground somewhere between practice and drawing for pleasure, or should I just hunker down and start grinding more often regardless of what I want to draw?

Good catch. Dunno if it can be changed now but will take note of where the table is in relation to the torso and what a more natural angle for the arm would be.

How do I deal with wanting to learn drawing when what I want to draw is technically illegal in my puritanical country? Genuine question. The thought of spending years learning a skill only to get put in jail for it is kinda hilarious, but a bit of a downer. I see oppai lolis on Twitter and it stays up, somehow. What's the deal? If I wanted to be a known artist, would I have to post art with sex elsewhere?

Also I feel like furry stuff tends to have more leeway. Am I just automatically safe if I slap a furry aesthetic on it?

youre working past your skilllevel. you are not ready for finished pieces yet. or color. or value. or faces. or, well anything. focus on these things first. learning those will be a fun journey

The subject of that painting was a midget so it makes sense.

I've set a goal for myself to fill one page a day starting yesterday. What am I doing wrong/right? I already know I need to slow down and take more time.
