Whenever I draw people from life (or from a screen, for that matter) I tend to dramatize features, in an attempt to flesh out an art style. This leads to what some may consider offensive imagery, because they look kinda racist. Especially with black people, the lips are tricky, and noses too. Is this even anything I need to be concerned about? (pic related: s'posed to be hannibal buress. im new to realism, i know its kinda shit)

When people complain about racist features, what they're really saying 90% of the time, but don't want to admit, is that they want to be flattered. This is normal, everyone wants to be flattered. All the successful portraiture artists flatter their commissioners. Fat people like their paintings to be just slightly skinnier, old people like fewer wrinkles, and everyone likes optimal lighting and a bit of glow.

If you chase realism or caricature without keeping this in mind, you will get in trouble. Doubly so if you only apply this standard when you draw other races. The features you choose to caricature and the features you don't will say something about you. Conversely, if you draw every equally ugly, you'll probably be okay.

Hannibal Buress is not a supermodel of a man, but he isn't an early 2000s flash animated motion tween puppet with a 3 inch gap between his teeth and that are more detatched from his head and look like they're connected from his glasses. He's a warmup/concept to use. Draw a celebrity like a portrait study, and then draw a caricature of them exaggerating their features.
