I want to learn to draw realistic portraits of the people I know.
Downloaded pic related as well as Vitruvian studio tutorial.
Never browsed /ic/ before, Loomis seems to be the most frequently cited author in the archive but it also seems to be a meme and several posters say that his potatoes become a bad habit.
Can I get a non-ironic recommandation? Thanks

Anatomy of Facial Expression. It covers all facial anatomy from skull to muscles to fat, covers muscle functions and how they cause visual changes that comprise emotions, and has a large amount of life references of faces making expressions.

The book covers everything you would need for anatomy of a human head, but you should seek another source for constructing a base structure of a head that you can rotate; Loomis is the most ubiquitous for this, my strategy was just drawing from life a fuckton. Draw hundreds of portraits with a goal in mind for each, whether it be how a specific feature fits in to a face, or looking for forms/planes, or whatever else. Find references from different angles and if you have trouble understanding hair, watch hairstyle tutorials on youtube, they usually show how hair works pretty well from multiple angles.

Godspeed anon.

I think the key here is studying composition. Also, understanding proportion.. because even though the drawings aren't anatomically 'perfect' there is some sense of proper proportion that keeps the figures looking more or less consistent.
