You got very very lazy with details such as her arms, the dress, her hair and a lot of other small things such as outlining certain objects. Her facial anatomy is too small and it’s a huge imbalance with certain things looking realistic and others looking cartoony. Her arms also need to be way more organic, it just looks like you made a thick line right there with no regard as to how her arm should look. You should draw a bit more on humans

You need to work on your values. You don't have enough contrast between your lighter values and darker values. Without that
you won't be able to make any statements about form. Don't be afraid to really play around with your values. That being said, I
don't think this is bad at all, looks pretty good honestly.I see your shifting your hues a bit as you go from light to dark which is
pretty nice. My paint over isn't the best, but I hope it helps to get the idea across. Keep trying, work from some more
references, try to pay attention to how the forms catch light, and try to work on a darker canvas, it will help you see what your
doing a bit better, especially with lighter skin tones.

Where can I learn how to shade the face better? I know the location of the bones and muscles in terms of line, but I clearly still have only a simplistic idea of where to place shadows. Where can I read some really in depth material on how to shade the different planes and muscle areas? Also the third drawings is the best one out of the bunch

My single objections are:

”mouth seems a bit too big and out of perspective”

”Right eye seems to slant into the right side”

”Left eye looks directly at the camera and breaks perspetive”

”and the switch from the side of the head to the front of the head might be a bit too sudden”

You do not need to have a super vivid fantasy for it. Art is actually quite formulaic and involves a substantial amount of basic reasoning and practical knowldge, ask any practicing artist and they will tell you this. dont rely on drawabox for drawing people, this is what his figure lessons looked like before he deleted it

go to video course thread and download some popular videos like vilppu or whatever, open a ref and try to draw it, copy a drawing from a book or someone else, just draw a person instead of grinding boxes
i'im not a master but i used to grind these dab and dynamic sketching crap and just felt so frustrated, i just ditched it and started drawing people from imagination and copying drawings/refs and its gradually starting to look better. like, nobody tells you when to stop drawing boxes, all you get is this vague advice "learn construction"

Thanks anon. I relied on the dynamic sketching and DAB courses to get used to drawing straight lines and shapes more than anything as I had problems even doing something as simple as a box. Any specific course for a complete beginner? Drawing stickmen kinda pisses me off and I wish I could get through that phase as soon as possible and start making real figures.

i think huston's and hampton's book are alright but you have to get some refs and try to follow their advice by drawing because they're not telling you steps like "first draw this, then draw that". they just give you general idea where to start. i started with gestures and scribbled body parts around them until they looked ok. vilppu's videos are good when you want to start "polishing" the body parts

i hope this helps you somehow, i dont want to give shit advice or anything

Just draw with pencil for a while. If you want to play around with color because it's fun then go ahead, I don't like to tell people to not explore things because they're not "ready" for them yet, but at the same time you really aren't ready to approach color seriously until you get better at form and value.

Critique, please. What is the best way to incorporate backgrounds in a watercolor painting without it being overly blurred? Can a background be just as detailed as the main focus so long as the colors are more muted and don't distract from the main focus? I am a tard and too afraid to get at backgrounds.

I tried to play with color instead of the generic muted green/brown black of crocodiles. Sometimes I look at it and the colors seem fine but other times I feel it kinda looks bad? I dunno.

Also, I'm just a hobbyist that likes to draw animals. But would I benefit from attempting human anatomy? Would it help me with forms and lines even on animals? I have just been drawing animals from books since I was a kid, but I feel like I have been stagnant in my improvement for a couple years now and I just want to improve for my enjoyment.

I used a watercolor palette for the base and used Arteza watercolor brush pens for the "splotchy" detailing. I don't know if watercolor is suppose to be this layered but I kind of enjoy it. Do I need to just keep working on it or throw it out the window?

The black is dumb but on the reference picture it is fine. Am I not translating properly?
Fish are main focus so from what I understand the rest is a background? Sorry for the tard question.

You're on the right track, but think "value" instead of 'muted color". The idea is to control your values, so you can adjust them purposefully to not draw attention from the focus, while maintaining credibility at the same time. There's no 'do this, and it will work every time" method, it's just practice and experimentation until it becomes more intuitive to you. The level of detail is up to you - but generally the further away, the less detail and the more block shape things will be - you don't have to paint every leaf on a tree on a hill far away, a block shape can give enough visual clues that it's a 'tree", and our brains fill in the rest.
The colors on this are fine, if a bit brown. but it looks good as a thumbnail/far away. A common mistake is for beginning artists to only look at things close up - hang it on your wall, and look at it over a week or so, and see if anything comes to mind while looking at it, like "maybe if I put some cool hues in the shadows, like greens and blues, it'll pop more."
Watercolor is as many layers as you need - they can easily get muddied with some, but that's the challenge of watercolor, planning your washes so you're not building up the wrong hues. That can take a career to fully master.

"Construction" is almost the same as "just draw better". If someone is a /beg/ who can't draw then it'll probably be hard for them to find the right construction lines too.

You're absolutely right with the brown. I tried to avoid the brown/green of a crocodile but I went ahead and did it anyway. Jesus, I am mega retarded to not see that before. The "brown" pen I used is more of a dark wine red but with the yellows it made it more brown. Fuck me.

For my next artwork I am going to focus on cooler hues and I am going to make a goddamn background. I will stick to shapes.

ok this is my crit, i tried my best to make it simple, i hope i didnt make any big mistakes. for now my personal advice for you is to try make more loose, dynamic lines, like allow your arm move movement, because these drawings seem a bit scratchy, "carved" into the paper. top left drawing - that hip couldve been just this one curved line instead of these bumps, i think its better to draw long lines first and then add details, bumps etc i also see you have a tendency to make your figures and/or their body parts longer than they are. so just keep making ref studies but try to loosen up and measure more, you can even use a liner or whatever. and try to draw something from memory sometimes, that helps getting "comfy" with proportions (at least for me)
i used the loomis method for head in case you wanted to know

Because most of the people here are like you, trying to learn, or they don't know anything about it, other than "Loomis".
Personally, I think there's too much emphasis in it here, because most of the collective knowledge about art education here is cobbled together by people who don't know what it is. Construction is simply an exercise to train your mind to think in terms of form - the goal is to use it to establish the form, and then refine it - a skilled artist can simply establish a few landmarks and work from there. The goal isn't "perfect" construction, it's part of a bigger journey. It's not "perfect" anatomy, it's making credible figures that are pleasing. Loomis, and all of the other variations of construction, are just getting your brain trained to break things down to basic shapes, so you can visualize them, and draw them with more authority. (Lacking a reference to work from)
Does your figure look credible, the pose credible, and have any pleasing aspects? Grats. You have succeeded in construction. Doesn't have to be perfect, it's a learning tool.

drawing with symbols means drawing your own ideas of objects and bodies you have stored in your head. which are very simplified by definition so they look bad on paper. so you should look at reference like you dont know anything about it and follow it closely. sometimes people recommend flipping the ref vertically, like upside down

>> No.4293240

I would call this 'solid first week of figure drawing class". Now, let's move on:
One, start giving your figure room to breath. One page per drawing, especially with digital, there is no reason to be clumping them together, it's confusing and distracts from the figure.
Nest, start refining the form. Less lines, more S curves, more contour, more confident lines, ie. THIS is the contour of the thigh, not 2 or 3 lines. Capture the form. Stop worrying about the line down the torso, look at the body as an object in space, with form and volume - and look at the blank space around it, and define the form within that (ie. white space) with contour lines. Draw the whole figure. You don't have to draw the whole face in detail, but the shapes of the face - and the hands and feet.
And, it's time to start doing warm up gesture drawings, with an economy of line, and then pick one and work it up more, as a refined piece. In a few weeks, start a pattern of 20 minutes of gesture to warm up, one or two more refined poses, focusing on more accuracy, and then one final piece, throwing in shading and volume. Limit yourself to an hour on this. That's what a figure drawing class is, for the bulk of it. Later in the course, then you move on to multi-session pieces, of one pose, where you work up a final, refined drawing, doing smaller, separate studies of problem areas if needed.
These aren't bad. You're on the right track, you need to take the next step up. Start thinking form, not construction. Use light construction to place landmarks, refine from there, looking for contour. You're working digitally, so it's more challenging to work with line weight, but I would adjust your stylus to have more expression in your lines, so you don't have the same line throughout.

Symbol drawing is really just cartooning, or what a child does. A stick figure is a symbolic representation of a human figure, or a round circle is a symbolic representation of the eye. The way to work from that, is to start drawing what is really there, not what you think is there. You haven't studied it, so your brain reverts to 'circle" for the eye. Construction is ONE thing to study - mostly what your path is, is to look at things, visualize it's form in your head, and translate it to your hand. It takes practice. Your brain needs just as much 'loomis" as your hand. Start simple, work from there. Start with cubes, cylinders, cones, etc, and work up to more complex shapes. Same thing as any beginning drawing class - draw a square. Now make it a cube. Now shade it. Now draw a coffee cup.

This is really cool from an abstract view. You captures interesting shapes and flow within the negative space. The person's right arm on the right looks like it could be from someone else with the position of it, I like it from a wacky abstract view. If you don't like that approach your figures are extremely stiff and disproportionate. First I would come up with a better composition than that, it's too boring if you want to make something more realistic as opposed to what I said about it being more abstract. You also need to draw through more, and work on gestures to get them looking more alive. I meant drawing through as in you draw the figures like they aren't in front or behind one another until you get a better understanding of proportions in difficult poses. I don't know if you can see what I see in this, but as this piece stands right now I really like it for what I see.

aight guys.. I did this cause someone told me to do figure studies to get gud. But now I feel worse than ever. These are the best of 30 1 minute poses. What am I doing wrong? What can I do better? I see people draw up stuff in one minute a thousand times better than what I did. What can I do? Give myself more time? Focus on something easier? idk, I'm absolute beg as you can see.

Are you following any book?
Don't start from the contour. Draw the longest line you can find in the body, it is usually a line that goes from the top of the head to the toes of the leg supporting most of the weight of body.
Start "adding" the limbs that were left out of the line into another line and then start adding the details of the body.
I had a picture explaining the progress but it seems it like I lost it...

Okay, I should have brought this up earlier, how the fuck do I make my images not so shitty? I had the resolution and PPI set for this super high but it's still all fucked and doesn't have any anti-aliasing. Is Krita just bad? Should I just suck it up and learn photoshop? Just starting. Have never drawn before. Did the classic, upside down, pic related.

I know where I screwed up, the right arm is all wrong because I initially drew the lower sleeve too high then didn't know what to do so had to awkwardly connect it, the right hand is too big, and the face is wrong (though it kind of looks ok), among other things.

But I feel the biggest problem is, I spent 4 hours on this. Is this too long? DotRSotB said "thirty to forty minutes - more if possible" so I just spent as long as I wanted. But I have a feeling it is way too long and I should not be a perfectionist with these beginner exercises. Would appreciate a little feedback regarding the pace I should be going at when just starting out.

Gesture drawing practice: How much time are you supposed to spend on each gesture. I've done 20 gestures with the quickpose website in 30 seconds or 1 minute.

You can't change who you are and how you approach drawing. If you took 4 hours on this you'll probably take a lot of time in more drawings in the future. This exercise is pretty much about getting used to putting marks down, without thinking about how it looks, which is why it's upside down. When you start drawing more you're going to be tempted at times to stop during the beginning stage of the drawing because it will take a while for it to appear like anything, but if you keep going and building up everything it qill alowly start to look like whatever it is you want to draw. Trying to speed up the process to get it to look like something will hinder your growth, and experience making you not like it.

I don't like cherishing what I make. I feel very detatched to what I draw, so I can stay objective. After I finish most drawings as best I can, I throw them away, because they're not that good and anything I've accomplished from sketching, I should be able to do again, since drawing is 100% skill and no happy accident is impossible to recreate without deliberate thought. At least that's my philosophy.

I think a lot of you guy's art would look better if you just stick to using hard round or brushes with flow enabled for now. Like for example the basic brush Sinix uses in his "beginniner brush" video.

Shading with the soft brush makes it look to muddy and blurry. I've seen a lot of good artists shade with soft brushes but after they reached a high enough skill level to make it look good.

All of the shitty weeabegs should have to do this. Draw cubes, cylinders and pyramids in 3 point perspective. This is not good or hard or impressive but it is how drawing works. It's how your eyes work. Until you can do this easily with no reference you shouldn't really be copying anime girls. Can someone here tell me what a normal impressions to engagements ratio looks like?
Not sure how to interpret percentages under 10%. Also the kind to never chitchat.

Twitter users care about "their friend" who grows throughout the year. Focus on what you like, not those numbers.

thumbnail reads well but you're losing a lot of form with your details

use interior lines more intentionally and always try to accentuate shapes/reveal detail

You are bad at construction. Use better construction.

Starting up digital artwork just now after doing tradart for a while.
Anything to know about XPPEN specifically, and it's tie-in to Photoshop?
Any recommendations on the best keybinds for the 8 buttons + wheel, and the two on the pen?

What is 'construction' as it relates to art? Also, if I had better "construction", would the result make line art passable? Overall, as it is now, would call the piece "ugly"?

Good start. Keep adding detail, render shade, line etc.

I got all that, except the, "learn to draw legs" part.

In what way do you mean I need to improve on drawings legs? Do you mean in understanding how they work, cuz the legs I drew and the legs you sketched out look the same, in the category of basic form; your sketch just looks like they're placed and positioned better. I'm confused.

It seems you aren't really using construction. Basically everything can be simplified to 3 basic forms.
Cubes, spheres and cylinders. Think of these 3 basic shapes as being made of play doh, so while it all comes down to those 3 basic shapes, you are free to stretch, twist and bend them to fit your needs.

Look at an animal and before you put pencil to page just start by thinking how, in a very simple fashion, are you going to break said animal using only those 3 shapes given to you.
Its harder than it sounds at first but look up some videos and see how other people do it.

FIND THE DEFICIENCIES WITHIN YOUR ART THEN IMPROVE UPON THEM. IF ONE CANNOT SEE ANY LET OTHERS LOOK. LET WHAT THEY SAY FURTHER YOUR VISION. DRAW AND POST UNTIL IT IS DONE ANONS.
