You kinda fucked it up.
- The background affects the subject and vice versa. What was originally a warm figure next to a cold background is now a cold and desaturated figure next to the saturated yellow. and even though it is a lemon yellow, it is still the warmest thing in the painting now.
- The yellow is also fighting for foreground dominance even though you call it a background because it is warm and saturated.
- Avoid textures unless 100% intended. Paint as flat as possible until you are sure you are never going to make changes because you cant paint over thick paint without retaining the texture.
Its also just less interesting now. Looks like graffiti on a wall now.

Pic related is your original in greyscale which I was going to comment on before you changed it.

It started with me being tired of stretching canvases (and also too cheap to buy more) and painting on the back gave me twice as many surfaces. I quickly came to enjoy the rough texture of an unprimed canvas and how the unglued, ungessoed linen fibers would react to the brush and the paint.

If you're using oil they're going to fall apart within a few years. Theres a reason why gesso exists, oil tends to rot the fuck out of the fibers in canvas regardless of type (both cotton and linen are essentially cellulose) and gesso provides a layer of protection. Hell there are even clear gessos out now which means you can enjoy the effect without the retardation

I really like the lighting on this. Very bold. I think the spots of black shadow are a bit too much though. With how strong that light source below is I don't think there would be much pure black. The rim of the cauldron should also be much warmer. It should be lit by the lava, just as the underside of the figure.

This version the green and red highlights on the skin and blue shirt dont make sense and stand out as a mistake. I say simplify the back ground of the first version with a green red and yellow wall paper. With majority green color with yellow high light and red and blue shading. It will also add a abstract element by using colors as shading and will be interesting to the eye without stealing the show from the human. I'm lazy and did a quick version to explain my idea but I think a layering of yellow and red and blue lines over a green wall would match the highlights on the shirt and add that more interesting touch and color >>4290811 needs

Still practicing watercolor, hopefully will be able to try it out with a life model next sunday, in the meantime I'm trying to figure a simple workflow from start to end so I don't have to worry about time and can focus on color and light.
This painting was another attempt to get a grip on color, afterwards feels like I should've done a bit more to tie the image to the bottom of the frame, maybe define the floor a bit more to make the model pop out better.
Still, it's getting easier, I'm fiddling less with my paint and have a better understanding of how to achieve certain effects so I'm going to keep at it.

the radiator does stick out too much but it's mostly because those color doesn't exist anywhere else in your painting. I believe that if you would put some more marks of the values that you've already used (like the grayish blue of the radiator, grayish green of the couch and crimson from the pillow) and use it on the wall as well it would create more of a complete feeling, that different elements seem more connected and less fragmented. Look at Vuillard or Sickert and how they paint interiors, for instance. funny enough, one of first paintings had a radiator like yours; I painted it quite similarly and had a hard time trying to make it fit the whole

So I started painting in oil about 4 or so months ago, doing studies and got lucky with a few but now I just haven’t been able to make the paint do what I want.
So here is a pure fun abstract oil that I kinda vowed to myself I’d never get into doing.

I get what you're trying to do, but anatomically theres some strange things going on here that particularly makes itself felt around the pelvis. In order to show what it seems you want to show (her left leg and bum) you'd need to pull the right side of her pelvis a lot closer to her ribs. Try to do this pose yourself and see what happens to your own pelvis. Its worth noting that unlike the shoulders, the pelvis is one solid entity. Therefore, the connection between the femur and the pelvis are always constant in relation to each other. With this in mind, you'll notice how disproportionate the left side of her body is compared to her right.

Thank you. Technically it’s a pigmented shellac sealed hardboard panel with 2 coats of oil based lead primer for the ground I put on with a pallet knife, leaving a random texture subtly. Then I put the first layer of color on with a brush and smoothed it randomly with a pallet knife and cloth when it tacked up a little, wiping out some areas for highlights. I let that dry then came back with other colors, kinda staining it then a few days later I reinforced the darks to start trying to emphasize depth and created some kind of 3d form.
Next I’m going to go with some more vivid colors and then probably some highlights and go for a texture on the emerging forms that randomly have occurred.

Hey guys, just starting out in pointing (studying drawing seriously for about two months and painting for about three weeks, though I have painted more casually before) it’s first time posting here. Could anyone help me with a little critique?

So far I think that I need to work on the range of values. I don’t feel like I get dark enough. (Especially in the lower right of the cloth) I also seem to drift away from the reality my subject. I have to admit that part of me likes doing so, but I’m going to begin making a conscious effort to portray my subject and not “cheat” by following where the painting wants me to go. Anyways, any tips or critique would be greatly appreciated.

Upon a second glance I asked myself that and reached that conclusion. Then then next thing obviously was, “well then, what does he do...?”
I thought for a few and couldn’t come up with anything concrete. Look at a few Nerdrum paintings and maybe think on that maybe. Very little info type foreground? Mute colors that hint to colors of background? Whatever you do, make sure it’s the right value and it’s not distracting. Yes, easy for me to say. Sincerely, good luck man.

Make pencil sketches in a notepad. The more that you do this the more you'll notice about your subject. If your working under sunlight it isn't always going to appear the same, it's always an approximation. This. Although there are a few precautions you can take with oil to make it more easy in a small space, palette paper vs a wood palette makes cleanup easier, use a tabletop easel instead of a floor easel, panels or gessoed paper instead of canvases, etc.

anything you read in a book you're liable to forget, misremember, or misinterpret later, so the best thing you can do to prepare for painting is draw from life a lot, sans instruction, and paint when you think you've learned something new. Fine arts painting is meant to be a timeline of your life, so to start the timeline you need to start recording the things around you (or the things in your head) as best you can, to an honest level of detail.

Please help, /trad/, I'm desperate. The grisaille is done in watery acrylic, and I'm considering an oil glaze layer to deepen/brighten/tighten. Either way, on top of this has to be ethereal, luminous blue-- everywhere but the face. Acrylic glazes look brighter, almost glow, really, but the Golden glazing and gloss liquids both get tacky almost instantly and leave this gross patchy texture. I also wouldn't be able to do the oil grisaille on top if I wanted to color with acrylic. Oil, on the other hand, is lovely for glazing, forgiving, and I have the time, since this isnt due until april, but its vibrance is muted by comparison to the acrylics, and the luminosity/"digital" glow is the lynchpin of the thing. Acrylic or oil? Tips on glazing?

I'm not completely sure what you mean by that. I guess I just tried a lot of shit and figured it out. I started out by using it like watercolour, then I just started using less and less water.
I guess I can give you some tips: Overall gouache is best to use grafically, basically don't blend at all(at least not until the end), focus on making shapes of pure colour, and focus on using nice looking colours.
An excersize I used when I was starting, was to just paint shapes next to eachother with harmonious colours.

oil, just get colors that are completely transparent. It'll get muted as the oil cures, but then you just have to varnish it and it'll glow.

>>4321474
Get some small brushes, and some flat, crisp, soft brushes. Your problems are that you're painting too thick, and you're sticking with 'block in' brushes when you should switch out to detail. I did the same thing when I started oils. Paint more thinly and the paint will behave more like you're used to with gouache.

>> No.4323527

>>4322937
Not the same anon but a tip I have for gouache is to get the drawing done as thoroughly as possible before you start painting, use hb or 2h pencil. I'm used to painting in oil where I dont really start with an underdrawing, I just work out the drawing with the paint itself. That's one of the bigger differences in process I feel

>> No.4323596

>>4323255
You're getting towards being gud. I like how you're blocking in your colors and shadows here but you need to start blending some of those edges. You can leave hard edges where you need them for sure, but I'd like to see some soft shadows in here too. Also I can see white spots peeking through in your painting, you should really fill those in.
