Ive been told by like 20 people at this point that you NEED to learn realism before drawing Japanese cartoon faces so i started learning loomis and anatomy but on a whim i looked at a how to draw manga book and it’s like the tomb of holy knowledge.

My question is this, if i have ZERO desire to ever draw 3dpd, wouldnt it be better to just read books like this instead of wasting my time on realistic loomis heads?

No you don't need to learn realistic loomis heads, do what you wish. pfftt perspective, it's not like manga characters live in a world where they can move forward, backwards, side to side and up and down. Who needs it.

They never live in realistic cities, nor hang around forests like you find in our world. Forget what mangaka Yusuke Murata says about studying realistic bodies and extracting the 3D forms out of them. It's utterly useless.

Disregard what the majority of people tell you and listen to only mine, because I only say what you want to hear, don't study realism, vaccinations causes autism and the earth is flat.

That was what I was saying. The characters are 2D, they don't need xyz that 3DPD people live in. You don't need to learn that shit to draw manga.

You don't need to!

That's the great thing.
It's not like manga is based on 3D.
Or that the majority of manga books and video tutorials uses a similar approach to drawing as loomis does.

I'm sure your manga is looking great and is the better for it without knowing it.

I'm a huge weeb and even I would get bored of drawing "Japanese cartoon faces". Realism is something everyone should know how to do. It's not difficult to acquire the skill. Just sit down and try.

The way to draw anime is to simply copy your favourite anime artists until you can do it without copying.
The basic constructions for anime heads is still similar to the loomis method.

>Realism is something everyone should know how to do.
this is where eastern ideas and western ideas of art seem to clash the most.
eastern artists learn the fundamentals through mostly copying stuff from artists they admire instead of "finding their own style", which is teached here in the west.
One of the reasons you can almost immediately tell that an artist is western when you see a shitty anime style drawing.

>Learn the rules before you break them
People misinterpret this shit constantly.
The rules are the fundamentals, and guess what, the fundamentals don't have anything to do with style.
You can stylize your drawings all you want and still adhere to the basic fundamental rules.
When people say "learn the rules before you break them", they simply mean the fundamentals, not super realistic renderings of a fruit baskets.

Cartooning vs Realism is a false dichotomy, the real question is whether you want to be designer-level at drawing.

A lot of people view cartoon, anime, or realistic character drawing as a matter of style, which is an infinitely broad and therefore useless term. People like you who are deathly concerned with style often end up leaning a collection of design motifs by rote and memory, without any ability to manipulate them or create new designs. For someone who is able to design, these "styles" are largely just arbitrary proportions that they can apply at whim and with freedom.

So the question isn't really whether you should learn manga or realism, or which you should do first. Someone who can design is able to do both. The style distinction only matters to people who copy and nothing else.
