My first attempt at painting. Much better than expected.

Trouble I had:

So-called "acrylic paper" warped under the paint. I think I will try heavier watercolor paper.

Picking up paint with my brush, I struggled to put it back down on the palette. I end up with a paintbrush overloaded with paint. Would better brushes fix this? Paint too thick? Bad technique? I did buy the cheap Winsor Newton acrylics and paintbrushes.

General advice and critique welcome. And I will buy some masking tape tomorrow.

Study proportion, perspective and gesture. Those are very simple things, but they will benefit your drawings like nothing else will. You're already thinking in 3D, so you're on a good path.

I recommend that you read "Sketching: The Basics" + "Force" by Michael D. Matessi. Good luck anon.

>>4259969

Acrylic is a bitch. It dries very fast. When in doubt, add more water. You don't have to let it dry for too long. That will maybe solve your brush problem.

And for god's sake, put masking tape on your margins.

It's a nice painting. Learn to mix colors the cool way (darken the browns with purple, use only primary colors, etc.).

Watch James Gurney's YouTube Channel. He uses Gouache, but it's not wildly different from using acrylic.

>>4260011

On first sight, the neck construction seems a bit wrong. Her right shoulder seems shorter than the left one. Also the right hand seems smaller than the left one.

The head does not attach to the neck at that place, and seems flat on the top.

Oh, and the ear seems a bit higher than where it should be.

It's a nice drawing, overall. The face seems nice. If you're using reference, check it again.

Take a break from fundies my dude draw from imagination. Draw at least 1 drawing from imagination per day for 2 weeks. Copy some art you like in the mean time too. After 2 weeks go back to studying the fundies and stuff. You should not be drawing and studying loomis heads for a month. At most you should take 2 days to study that stuff it's not rocket science.

I see a lot of begs do this and it's really not healthy for them in the long run. "Study Loomis, Go practice fundies for 4 months. Read this book watch this video. etc. etc." Doing those things rigorously non-stop when you are a beg actually hurts you more than help. In the end all your drawings are gonna look like studies and it's gonna make yourself feel even worse than before. Relax take it slow and steady.

I'm trying to figure out gesture drawing.
5, 6 and 7 are untimed, the rest are 1-minute drawings.
Am I on the right path here?
Any issues with my drawings I should be aware of (other than my timed ones being unfinished)?

I don't expect God tier work I just don't understand how you can possibly say they have solid foundation. The work looks ugly BECAUSE they are missing a solid foundation in fundamentals.

Don't know how much this is gonna help you but here goes
1. Draw a good looking, if not perfect, circle. Your head looks kinda wobbly
2. Draw a line on the sphere roughly from top to the middle, this will decide your head's direction
3. Imagine and draw a circle that covers the bottom part of the sphere from the end of line drawn from 2
4. Construct a box (muzzle) starting from the circle

Also, nose and eyes look good roughly at the same size. Seriously draw more, you have attempted too few

Darker lines anon, don't be anxious, it's just paper. Misplace a line and you won't even remember it in a week, let alone ten years, but if you hyperfocus on accuracy you'll be much less skillful in ten years than you'd be if you loosened up

>>4263002
Draw some boxes, not even as a meme. Place them together in space on the paper such that they all make sense in terms of their perspective. Freehand all the lines and focus on keeping the golden perspective rule in mind more than on trying to get perfectly straight lines; angles are way more important than lack of squiggliness. Also the golden rule is that all the edges of a cube will appear to converge as they get farther away, and the bigger and/or closer a cube is to the viewpoint's 'eye' the more extreme the angles of convergence. Draw boxes both as a warmup and as simple doodling to keep your hands in practice. We're all gonna make it anon.

Look at a bit of metal next to a bit of plastic and tell me the difference. To make it a bit easier, it has to do with the amount of reflection. 'White' metals like steel don't really have any color, they are just bouncing the light that is falling all around them to begin with. Colored metals can be harder to produce than non-colored ones, so I'd suggest painting a few studies of colorless metal first before you try tackling green and yellow metal.

Is right, you seem too stressed and serious for someone who is just getting started, drawing for fun is important to be able to keep going when you suck, have fun with it.

This mannequin looks to me like he is going to have a nervous breakdown for some reason lol.
Still, it's pretty obvious you need more time drawing daily, and continuing to study perspective, structure, proportion , and gesture. But I'd hope you are trying your best to do that already, just not with a physical teacher to help or a full deck of cards for yourself. Instead of leaving it at "do more fundies" as 90% of the critique is in beg threads, I'll give you a couple specific things to do with your box people.

Look at your forearms, by the angle of his shoulders, the forearm that should be closer to the viewer is significantly shorter, and even if the arms were swapped, it would be alot. So pay attention to proportion or at least sameness especially with limbs, no shame in measuring stuff out at this stage with a pencil or finger or whatever.
Shade the side of your boxes that is away from the light, just with a single layer of lines even, helps alot with readability.
Add joints to your limbs, even if you aren't ready for hands and feet, ankles are a box, wrists I do as ellipses, will help keep your forearms and lower legs in check length wise. And also, those legs you drew are just one face, a 2d plane. You must start drawing limbs as 3d forms as well, if your guy is turned slightly to the viewer, we will see the sides of his legs as well, and the way you've drawn then with 1 face you really cant sell the illusion of them bending or twisting. This is where perspective really helps, as it's harder to make the limbs even on a box person look right as a 3d form, but still you must try.

>> No.4263938

>>4263924
2/2

Lastly I'd say dont be afraid to offset the boxes for the head, shoulders, and hips, this is key to making a figure that looks in motion, one that can bend and isnt so stiff. Whether its drawing a head or a whole body, our mind tends to panic and think that we are turning and offsetting things way more than we actually are. Like a good example is beginners all the time try to draw a head at a 3/4 and it ends up being this fucked up mix of straight on and a very slight turn. Try moving the hips more to the side of the leg that is holding more of his weight, and at the same time angle his shoulders so the front is lower than the back one, you will see what I mean, when you draw the boxes you will think its gonna be way off and then you connect things and it actually looks alive, less flat. Also I like drawing gestures, and then superimposing structure to make it work practically, and vice versa.

That's all i got good luck man.

Okay guys I have just about zero experience in art aside from very basic knowledge of perspectives. That said, I’m looking to get into something more comic-like, perhaps like a graphic novel. I am beneath beginner, I’m really just looking for advice on where to begin for something that has a more cartoonish-style while also being detailed. Any anons here that do stuff like that? I would love to see your stuff and where you began. The comic King City and the illustrations of Chris Riddell come to mind.

Thanks for any help at all guys. I doodled pic related on my break at work, would love to set aside time for something more focused. Thanks a lot.

So I'm trying out perspective for the first time in literally 10 years, and I was wondering if some anons could help me understand what's going on here. The right half is my first attempt, and the left side is my second attempt. The lines on the middle box were me dividing the boxes in half for the box sizes on the second attempt. There's also a middle point on the center box that I'm using as reference to give the boxes a third dimension. These are also all done by eye with no guide, so please keep that in mind. How true are my assumptions about this, and what else can I work on here?

Here's what I "know" so far about it:
1. I need to try and get my lines to stop on the points rather than over or under shooting.
2. I need to reduce the spacing between the boxes linearly, likely the same scale as the box sizes themselves.
3. I need to bring my "horizon points" in for this exercise and actually make them points rather than lines.

3 is optional and should only be done to check imo. Its really important to be able to draw the boxes without plotting. 1 is just going to take time and will never be perfect. 2: Yes the farther boxes should have less space which you actually did I think. Next this excercise is most important if you do the diagonals. Those are the hardes ones. Do a cross of these then fill the missing boxes. Side views are easy and they look good. One thing I would not is that the shapes are changing a bit. The last one in the line is too tall. Shorten it a bit.

You need to be converging EVERY line on the blocks, not just two. Your bottom row right side is closest to correct, however you're bending your lines a little, you want to avoid that for now.
