Why does Loomis teach that one should draw men who look more exaggerated than the average man? I don't think the figure on the far left looks "dumpy," I think he looks like a regular person. It's the other figures that appear unusual, like what someone would draw if they're trying to depict a very fake, plastic sort of fantasy. If I'm learning figure drawing, shouldn't I want to depict people as they are rather than "idealized," "perfect" versions?

Idealized versions are as the name implies more appealing to look at generally speaking. Loomis had his work featured in advertising/magazines/fashion related outlets so it makes perfect sense to have figures that represent an ideal athletic/model type figure.
The same can generally be said for stylized works where a more appealing/heroic/goodlooking etc is typically preferable. As far as learning goes a 8 Head tall figure is just a very easy to remember and easy to divide benchmark. 4 heads down to the crotch. 4 heads long on the legs etc. so it's good to use at least those kinds of vertical proportions.

Because idealized proportions look right. Regular proportions feel like midgets and nobody likes midgets.

Why did the upper legs grow as the mannequin sat down?

>> No.4252493

>>4252323
Understood that the sitting figure is 6 1/3 heads tall, accidentally made the torso too short by putting the crotch 1/3 a head below the navel rather than a full head, and as a consequence accidentally made the legs an extra head long to compensate and created sitting slenderman.

Something to note is that headshape and appearance affects how we view it too. Yeah, i can see its kinda idealizeable with bigger over smaller. But its kinda cringe how he choose to draw a balding, unmasculine man and compare it to superman just to exaggerate the effects of proportion.

Advertisement. They didnt have Instagram models and photoshop back in the day, so illustrators used idealized ideas of human bodies that appeal to the masses. Hence why Loomis is full of pinup women with retarded waists and child feet.
