Why do most people lose soul as they become technically proficient and how to avoid this from happening?

Too hung up with the technical aspect and making their fundies look good. Past a certain point the fundamentals just become second nature though, and that's where you get your soul back.

Some people just forget that you need to train "appeal" too and not just technical and anatomical correctness.

This.
Always renber composition, storytelling, shilhouette and stylization. Use realism as a tool, not a goal.

desu, drawings mean a lot more to you when you haven't done thousands of them. when a /beg/ actually gets off their ass and draws something, it's probably pretty inspired and has a lot of value to them; i just draw out of habit.

after you learn, you have to unlearn.
Start deciding what needs to follow the rules and what doesn't.

The brain builds pathways based on what you successfully solved problems with and favors successful solutions. That includes imagining things.
If you practice drawing a thousand boats and a thousand cars and only the boats turned out successful your brain now greatly favors boats.
You run up against a problem your brain will try to solve it with boats or the boat-like things you practiced.
When you start you aren't tainted by boats and boat-like things so your brain looks anywhere and everywhere for solutions.
Now its boats all the way down.
That goes right down to the core for all of it. Even basic mark making.
Gradually the things that your brain isn't favoring atrophy and you'll have to dig them back out consciously.

Soul is used by retards. It's a vague term for pretentious people to use when they aren't smart enough to actually say what makes a piece of art good.

Technical Proficency gives your employer the leverage to demand whatever they want out of you and it gives you the ability to churn out whatever you want.
There is no longer a struggle or handicap to pour every ounce of your being into making a good piece and that is usually what makes art look good at times.
Get rid of the human element, and you have a robot doing the work who only operates on command and has a ruthless ethic to carrying out their job.

>those thumbnails
why are people so obsessed with becoming a concept artist. whats the point? working 10 hours a day painting bucket variations and 1000s of generic landscapes like that? then eventually "retiring" to create your own "online school" where you charge people for 1hr tutorials regurgitating the same shit for the next wave of clones?

>> No.4250215

>>4250204
have to pay for your food somehow anon

and being able to churn out generic landscape concept "art" might be their only way of doing that since they never tried training in anything else throughout their boring lives.

don't limit your skillset anon, or you could end up the same way.

the reason they lose soul is because they sacrifice consumerism for education. most of them dont play games watch movies etc because "muh 16 hours" Literally the second you go back to conuming for entertainment instead of knowledge you'll regain soul. unironically have a life outside of work and soul comes back.

>> No.4250376

>>4250204
You know illustrators do the exact same kind of thumbnails before starting a landscape-heavy illustration, right? It's not like only concept artists are allowed to use that workflow...

>> No.4250382

The more complicated a work is, the more soul you have to put into it. When your picture has only a few elements, you only have to make those few elements soulful.
It's much more difficult to make every line, shape, brushstroke, figure, object, etc. soulful in a complicated drawing.
I once read a designer saying that a good designer will have one good idea a month. An amazing designer will have one good idea a week. That one good idea at the core of a work is what gives it "soul".
