AI art/theory thread
I use artbreeder

My theory is that art will soon branch off from direct production to where humans may begin to produce and cultivate art as how they would with livestock or crops.

The parameters I worked with using Ganbreeder was not involved with the content of the art itself, rather the germination material and how I directed the flow of AI output through reiterating generation after generation, to where the forms featured in the output began to match closer to my instinctive creative cravings.

Look here, m8. I hate postmodernism, too. I want the art I make to be authentic extensions and innovations upon Western traditions, not subversions of Western traditions.

When it comes to AI, it's a tool that can just as easily augment the greatness of Western traditions.

If you want to help, you could at least tell us whether what you see either gets the West right, or misses the mark, in light of Western traditions.

Another thing you could keep in mind as you expand your arsenal is the idea of also exploring all the different methods of translating the generated visual data to other mediums.

For example, not only could you paint up a facsimile of an AI generated work, but also you could take what you see, apply some kind of tansformative process, and let that become the output of what you end up painting.

Also, you could use other mediums, like sculpture, translating that 2D data to the 3rd dimension as you see it, or from other envisioned perspectives.

If you're interested in video art, you could program a laser to trace out representational forms from the picture in real time onto various different shapes, as well.

The possibilities are endless, especially these days.

Indeed, a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I think it'd be nicer to have been an artist 200 years ago. Aesthetic conventions were so rigid and narrow that it was easy to respond to them.

Okay, I'll write up *another* AI to analyse the possibilities and decide for me.

But I don't really get why you would use the ai to make something that someone just painting in photoshop could make. Why not use it to create things you couldn't think of on your own?

^proof that you've never tried using AI tools on your own, and that you might not be an actual artist.

A master artist can paint with any brush. Any artist who knows what he's doing can simply master whatever tool he comes across with pure intention; a plebslave artist is a slave to their tools.

As when a master artist uses a paintbrush, he knows what he craves and manipulates his brush to achieve what he desires; so when using tools like Artbreeder, a master artist knows what he craves and manipulates the genomes of each generation of images to achieve what he desires.

So the question still remains: why use AI over other tools?

There's many different answers to this dependent on the artist.

Some would ask in return, "why use a calculator over a slipstick?" Or, "why use photoshop over paint&canvas?"

Economically speaking, improvents in technology increases our production potential. So one common reason why artists would gravitate to AI is that they're able to not only produce more works suitable for his craft with less effort, but also there comes an expansion of possibilities of visual exploration and manipulation that was previously unheard of, bringing art forward at an exponential rate.

Not only that, but also it raises the bar for other mediums to compete and expand in technique. There is then an interexchange of ideas between the output of new mediums like AI and the input for new works made from older mediums.

Personally, the reason why I gravitate to AI is that it's a catalyst for expansion of my understanding of how art will be in the future, and the exploration of different ways to apply western traditions to newer technologically advanced mediums.

Any more questions?

My theory is that the AI technology picks up on representational data that is harmonious to human faculties of pattern recognition.

Basically, the AI produces a mixture of representational data that can be percieved by humans, evoking subconscious recognition of forms.

That's why when looking at this art from the corner of your eye, you think you might be seeing certain things, but when you actually look at the picture consciously, it tends to be moreover an abstract jumble of forms.

What I did when making those erotic ones, I was aiming at developing forms and representations of an erotic nature. Looking at it, there are visual triggerforms that are normally found on certain places of the human body assembled in a sort of orgiastic collage independent of anthropomorphic form.

What do you mean by that?
I "used my hands" when I signified my creative decisions through clicking/tapping the screen and adjusting the generation parameters.

The appearance of the level of involvement of an artist with his creation is independent from the nature & output tendencies of his medium. An artist can be just as involved with his work through AI as he can be with paint&canvas.

Perhaps you could go more in detail of what you actually mean by "soul"?

The qualitative distinction here is that actually painting or otherwise physically creating something exhibits a much higher level of involvement than whatever you post here. So I strongly disagree with your statement. What you are doing here is an extremely low level of art, if at all.

>>4243869
I don't personally use the term "soul", but what I usually look for is the amount of conscious decisions that are specific to the artist that have been put into the work. I don't believe that art is just about the effect on the observer, it's a gibberish definition that makes no sense to me.

Look, AI is going to do any skill we can do better than we can do it. It's an inevitability, whether you see it coming or not. Skill is going to be out of the equation. All things being equal, guess what that leaves as the new standard for excellence?

Taste. Style. Vision. If skill is an AI assisted tabula rasa, he who has the most beautiful, meaningful, or otherwise cohesive vision wins the day. Your taste alone will, within your lifetime, determine the course of your success.

>> No.4244425

>>4244177
>Look, AI is going to do any skill we can do better than we can do it.
That sentence means nothing. What is skill and how do we judge that? Take your the picture you attached: I see a lot of randomness, a lot of expressionless glitchy looking blobs and structures that just seem to exist to fill the space. To me that is not skill. A skillful painter is all about deliberation, actually understanding your motive. These GANs do not understand the motives on any deeper level. You can claim that we'll get there eventually, and maybe, but right now we are not even close.

>If skill is an AI assisted tabula rasa, he who has the most beautiful, meaningful, or otherwise cohesive vision wins the day.
First, art in my opinion isn't just about pretty pictures, it's about weaving in some deeper meaning into a piece. That takes a lot of control and deliberation. Second, I simply do not see a way to use AI effectively for art right now. What you are doing is simply insanely inefficient. Yes, you produce tons of pretty little pictures, but it's basically randomly wandering around in the feature space the GAN has conquered. There is no fine-tuning involved, and I see no thread in those pictures, it is random and it looks random. In case you understand anything about these things: What you are doing is basically equivalent to Monte Carlo sampling, you will eventually get to some pretty good results, but you are not very effectively moving towards your objective, and the closer you move towards it, the harder it will be to refine your result. Actually painting is more like a minimizer: You deliberately make a decision about how most effectively reach your objective, and arrange your result precisely in order to achieve it. You think you are sitting behind the wheel, but actually you are sitting on the passenger seat.

I give AI this much: It's nice for inspiration if that is an issue. It will probably replace a lot of the low-level crafty art jobs in the near future.

Wrong. Things or actions don't exhibit involvement, people do. It's up to the artist for how much involvement he chooses to exhibit regardless of the medium he works with.

>what I usually look for is the amount of conscious decisions that are specific to the artist that have been put into the work.
Again, you can't gauge exactly the amount of decisions an artist makes for his work just by looking at his choice of medium. It's the artist that makes creative decisions, not the medium.

>If skill is an AI assisted tabula rasa, he who has the most beautiful, meaningful, or otherwise cohesive vision wins the day. Your taste alone will, within your lifetime, determine the course of your success.
Interesting observation. While I do believe that those with less skill would gravitate themselves toward more technologically fluid & efficient mediums, I believe those with higher skills will still have a differentiative advantage over those less skilled, given that their higher amount of applied skill will amplify the merit of their work far beyond those who invest less skill into AI mediums.

Take an artist's skill, rate it from 1-10, then multiply it by 490 (AI tech), and you would see that those with higher skill are proportionately far greater than anyone with a skill rating of 1.

That is simply not true. If your medium is a uniformly painted square, you have only one degree of freedom, you can choose one color. No matter how hard you think about that decision, it's just one decision, and that limits your involvement in the creation of the work. In an actual unconstrained painting you have basically infinitely many degrees of freedom and the work can potentially be far more expressive than a colored square. In the case of this GAN, you just have a very limited number of latent variables, which leads to less control and thus less expressiveness.

>> No.4245090

>>4245000
>you have only 1 degree of freedom by choosing 1 color
>There's only 1 decision in that scenario

Wrong. In that context you defined, there is still an abundant degree of freedom even with only one color. How you apply the paint onto the square can vary in many many different ways. Example parameters in your context includes:

* what technique you use to apply the paint to canvas
* what type of paint
* the thickness of the coating
* the distribution of thickness
* the preferred style of lighting for the piece
* if you choose a traditional paintbrush, the types of strokes you use to achieve certain effects
* etc. etc. etc.

Those parameters I mentioned alone could multiply the complexity of the piece at the very least to a degree that would be indicative of a highly-skilled artist.

Every medium has its limitations, and how an artist navigates such limitations can also reveal the "soul" of the artist just as well.

I literally defined it as a uniformly painted square, please stop being an idiot, it's an academic example. The point is, that there definitely are innate limitations to a medium, which you can literally count when it comes to digital stuff. You can try to romanticize it as much as you like, but that is just a fact.

Your verbosity is pretentious and bothersome, especially since you're not creating anything novel - you're pushing a button on a machine running code that someone else wrote while pontificating on what ultimately distills to a dull, boring and shallow view of 'art'.
