Why do artists do this?

An equally low caliber thread got to experience the sweet release of death for this. A noble endevour, but at what cost?

Could be a frivilous drawing, not some big piece they've been working on.
Could be a way to distance themselves from the art, so that people are less likely to criticize it.
Could be that it only took then a couple of hours.
Could be loads of reasons, you'd need to know more about the person.

Because they work a lot faster than you, and their standards for a finished piece are much higher than yours

>> No.4236615

For some people, that is quick. Maybe their "real" pieces are also inked and colored, but the inking and coloring is more deliberate with more effort put into this and the doodle is just some here are the colors tier stuff in their eyes. You'll get to the level where this makes sense one day.

I used to think artists were just humblebragging when they were posting something as a quick sketch that I couldn't even do if I had spent a week on it.
I eventually got better, and I can now bang out something like pic related in 30-45 min, and I'd 100% call it a sketch.

That's because a fully rendered piece can take me 6+ hours, this isn't a very refined composition, the brush work is messy, the colors and lighting could use tweaking, and there's a major lack of details once you zoom in enough.

It's not to hear "omg can't believe this is quick for you", it's to let people/potential clients know that it's an intentionally rough piece done for fun/practice.

And what exactly is your definition of finished? Because to me, sketch/ink/flats and even getting to the stage of shadow block-ins is nowhere near finished.

Finished is going through blending, rendering, and final touches and adjustments. To me, at least.

Oh same here, that's why 90% of my work looks like this lol the last time I turned one of these rough pieces into a refined one was maybe 4 months ago, and yeah it looked more detailed and refined, but I wasn't a huge fan of it.

deflecting criticism
Insecure artists say "quick sketch" so that any mistakes they made will be dismissed by artists/non artists even though it clearly wasn't a quick sketch

you become a lot faster once you've done art for 10+ years. Of course a beginner puts a lot more time for what most of us have as muscle memory, like proportions.
Also in quick doodles, if you notice, the subject tends to be very simple, and something in the artist's comfort zone.

>> No.4237873

>>4237751
This. You can tell when someone is still /beg/ when they're so incredulous that you spent 20 minutes on something that would take them 8 hours. Just look at the posts ITT, the majority of people are beginners with a few higher tier artists.
They have to do construction, measure proportions, look at references, etc. While the good ones just freehand it from memory
You'll get there too...well some of you, anyway

This thread is full of sour grapes. How many of you sour grapes have a sketchbook open beside you right now? Don't tell me you browse /ic/ without a sketchbook open beside you at all times. Oh jeez, don't tell me you just come here to put others down... Oh my gosh, don't tell me you put others down not because it's funny to shitpost, but because it makes you feel better about yourself or something. Oh jeez, R/ic/k, oh man!

they're stupid as fuck and call their "doodles" which they obviously think are great drawings doodles to impress you into thinking that was them putting no effort in. If they were not trying to brag they would just say here's a quick DRAWING. These retards need to learn the definition of doodle or sketch.

Because sometimes an inked, colored, and finished drawing can have much less effort put into it. "Doodling" isn't about how many steps you cut out of the process, it's about your frame of mind while drawing. If a drawing I make is fully rendered and inked but I did it just to have fun or because I had a silly idea, that's a doodle. If a drawing usually takes an hour and a half but this one took twenty minutes, that's a doodle.

>> No.4240297

No a couple of hours is all you need for what you tell your clients is a full drawing

What you actually submit is a sketch but normies don't know because you have edge control you're good at blending and you're better than them, they have no idea

Now for a real finished work you need at least a full work day.

Persistence and dedication. The intermediate plateau is where most people give up. It's the great separater. Gains in skill grow slower over time, provided you're doing the same amount of work. This is across all skills.
