Accept that people will be interested. If it's good or bad show them. If they think it's bad say, you're working on it, if it's good say thank you. If they try to carry a conversation you don't care for, apologize and tell them you are need to continue working.
Don't stop because of people you don't know or care about. Also put on headphones as well, even if you don't listen to anything. Just something to stop people from approaching you.

I draw in cafes, parks and restaurants all the time. Hardly anyone ever bothered me. Mostly lonesome homeless people wanting either change or to talk at someone. Most of the time it's been passing comments.
School is a completely different situation.

While I don't draw in public, I do Japanese flashcards on a bench every day.
Sometimes people ask me what the fuck am I doing because I keep saying the words out loud, so I just show them.

Just bee yourself, people generally feel as awkward as you in public.

Once it was VERY hot and sunny, I looked at my shadow mid-study and saw some faint smoke coming out of my head. At first I thought it was an illusion, so I moved around and the smoke followed suit.
I then got up, went to an old man sitting on another bench and said:
>Excuse me, I have something a bit weird to ask you... is there smoke coming out of my head?

He didn't see any smoke, so he probably thought I was insane.

(I have since confirmed it is indeed visible smoke that comes out of our hair if you stay in the sun for too long, cause my family managed to see it.)
