**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, value, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references (illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.) to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

some decent little tutorials. the eye one is the best, imo. i liked the blue triangle method for laying in eyes with perspective in the third video.

Alright so the obvious what's good, what's bad but beyond that does anyone have any advice on implementing ambient light.
I see this on a lot of anime art with like this desaturated blue/purple lighting on things like hair I try and implement this on my own but don't quite understand It. any help?

Mostly small stuff.

To me there are a lot of tangents at the top of the head with the hair and bangs all meeting in roughly the same place. The chest looks really yellow compared to the rest of the skin for something under a shirt so I made them more red, painted over the skin colored glow over the shirt which seemed too strong but probably works in moderation. Tried sitting like that and the leg pose felt off. Felt the upper right leg should be rotated clockwise, also pointed out slightly wider if she has her foot where it is similar to how some runner's stretch. This would result in it pointing up a bit more from the pelvis and I think helps the silhouette/put life in the character. Hopefully you get the idea. Whole image seemed too warm so destaurated it slightly, a cyan soft light layer at low opacity would work too.

>> No.4231165

Thank you I'll work on it but one issue I encounter is that my color choices look like shit based on the monitor I use vs how the image is displayed on a phone. with it looking way more saturated on a phone which leads to stuff like the jarring yellow tits.

the size around the pit of the her left arm is way to big its like you went from a rest position to raising the arm but you didnt change it, and the torso should be place more forward if we use her pits as reference.

forgot to mention. the hand is looking pretty messed up by the thumb. also don't just put a girl in a blank void, place them in some type of setting or with a background shape. the ambient light is the color in the shadow. the blue/purple is likely to be the sky color or a style choice like cangiante

Generally? Do studies of photos and pieces from artists you like, then draw from imagination right after that and try to apply the things you've learned.
When doing studies, don't just copy the image mindlessly but actively think about your reference, ask yourself why your favourite artists made certain choices.

More specifically: The way you attach legs to the torso is wrong. Hands and feet need better structure. Knees and elbows. Basically, you seem to struggle with how different parts of the body connect to each other - which is understandable, because it's one of the harder aspects of anatomy, but obviously it's still important to learn.

well the dude said it in the vid pretty much, it's up to "them" to decide whether the content is intended for children/ and they basically reserve the right to label anything as "it's for kids" if it features drawn or game characters that children would like.
If you swear etc it will be labeled as not for children and apparently you won't even get featured unless someone deliberately searches for your vids.. but if your whole profile is already labeled as "kid friendly channel" swearing would be against ToS and you'd probably be banned. It's just nonsensical

you drew her ribcage too short and wide but you placed that part of the bone who is peeking under her boob at the same angle of her head, i dont know if that line near her right elbow is part of her ribcage or her belly buttom, if it's the former then her ribcage is way to wide and short and theres almost not space for her tummy, her legs lack form too. That line abover her cunny it's the adductor longus which is attached to her pelvis bone and leg bone(femur?) and is way too high above her cunny.i think you should place her neck forward a bit more. Her left arm seems dislocated but im not 100% sure.

i dont know with what angle you where going, her legs are in a frontal angle but her head is in an agle that can only be viewed from above along with her neck.

also a good way to have the height of the ribcage is using the top of the shoulder down to the bottom of the armpit, it should be about 3 times it/s height maybe a tiny bit more.

you need to learn anatomy, know hot to construct and build a memory library of the muscles in different poses with refs, if you only learn anatomy but you dont know how to construct it will never translate that well and with the help of refs you can understand the shape and mases of the muscle since most anatomy books are pretty escarce with dynamic body refs just the usual standing still, try googling ballerina nude for that.

here's how i approach to deconstruc and try see the forms

the shadows on her left abdominal by the belly button are too hard, would make the edge/contrast softer. the upper arms seem too short, the arm posture makes it seem like she has her shoulders shrugged up but she doesn't. is her right hand supposed to be holding something? the thumb is upside-down and there's a lot of contrast with the shadow and light which focuses the eye's attention there along with being in the center of the image.

colors mostly seem, no idea what you plan on doing for the background but the gradient should probably end in purple and not at blue.

What is supposed to be happening in this picture, a sunset? Do you want a realistic take on that type of lighting scenario, or just something that looks cool? Because realistic sunsets are a lot more subtle than people tend to think and it's hard to look up reference for them because cameras don't capture that kind of lighting scenario acurately. If you just want something that looks interesting and a bit more believable, incorporate the colors of the background more into the way you render the character. It seems like you tried to go a little cooler in some areas, but she could really be standing anywhere the way you shaded her. Don't be afraid to exaggerate color variation, after all you're working in a style that exagerates lots of things.

Hi /asg/ I am back again. This time with a set from memory, I decided to try some more variety faces.

Otherwise it feels weird that I keep doing this, at this point it feels like I have always been doing this it really is kind a creepy feeling. I did get more confident with the style than the at the start although I realize this isn't saying much since I am just coping one person and only faces. But this "style" really does feel way more familiar now, even tough I still have o work hard on fully creating a face like this from memory. I notice that I have not done profiles yet, I guess I'll have to fix that next time.

And FFS I need to learn how to do the hair of those sheep/goat girls, I just can't do them from my head every time it is just random fluffy bits thrown on.

Gonna make it. You usually get critique from much better artists than me but since this is dead time I might go for it. Your upper body and lower body are facing different directions with no twist on the middle so the drawing feels disjointed. Her left arm seems to be on the back but there is no pectoralis major showing such. Also due to the artifacts on the image looks like you draw really small and later on upscale things, drawing small might hurt on you on the long run. Hands are still off but you're getting there. Your stylization is well done you have obviously spent time learning to draw in an anime style but have glossed over planes of the head and real proportions of the face these look visually appealing but overly cartoonish and out of perspective in some if you want to improve your drawings then look into studying the broken down planes of the head so that your eyes and features really "click" with the face
Right now it seems as if you are drawing the head structure as an afterthought without putting as much effort into its construction as you should

you are stylizing when your basics/fundies are still /beg/, mid beg maybe, you need to learn anatomy to get better at conveying forms with a few lines which is used a lot on anime stuff.

heres a good example>>4232668 , this shows what i mean, you see that horizontal line in her left arm under her bicep or inner elbow, that line should only be enphasized when you bring your forearm close to your arm or any movement that pushes the muscles/skin of that area together, you fully drew the outline of that muscle in her neck, that muscle is mostly visible when you twist your neck, the hair... i now this is not a finished piece but look at the part in her forehead it looks flat and these small hanks of hair, looks like they are pointing forward not sure if that was your intention but it looks unnatural like the ones at the side at her face

these small details on her body actually requires you to know some fucking anatomy and for the hair you need a better understanding of 3D those mistakes should have been obvious to you since you are drawing on top of a circular mass just by following the contours.

so you take your pick; grind like a chink for some weeks or keep procrastinating that shit for ever

>> No.4236014

>>4235812
The idea behind this is to loosely and quickly put things in the right place and then gradually refine things with line and value. Doing this helps prevents large mistakes (like misplacing a whole arm) and tunnel vision on details.
I don't think I'm good enough to recommend it myself over other methods but I feel like it helps me with digital art (I usually don't do this with traditional art). I'd imagine this being hard for beginners though since you have to create form and apply anatomy as you refine things down.
If you're gonna to try this, then make sure your initial sketch is loose and quick because if you hesitate too much then you'll probably defeat the purpose of not focusing on details early

The hand is too small, the fingers and the palm are too short, there is no solid elbow visible either.

Here, in realistic proportions the hand is generally large enough to cover half of the face from the chin up to the browline. Obviously in animu this can be different as heads and faces usually are bigger and hands tend to be smaller buuuut they draw them proportionately smaller arms, shoulders and torsos as well.

The other thing that I can't really see on your hand is the placement of the pinky which if you look at your own hand is positioned lower than the other fingers which makes the pinky appear way shorter than it actually is. Next is that that the fingers and the palm are roughly the same length. Keep these rules of thumb (pun intended) in mind.

Think of it in a 3D space and how it interacts with the objects around it, you get a better idea on how certain objects flow and where to place proportions properly. When you draw long hair you typically don’t draw it straight down, you think of it on a 3D plane such as place it it over the shoulders or blowing in the wind, this not only gives your piece movement but it also helps it’s giving your drawing more of a lifelike figure.

your homus torso looks flat and it's hard to read her right leg angle it looks like its aside view but her calves indicates a view from above and her left leg is definitely broken

the top one is following your left's lower leg placement and botton is using your upper leg

Thank you for your input. The goal of this exercise is capture the dynamism of pose as drawn by Yoh Yoshinari (which happen to be fairly close to what the OP has drawn). I don't really care about realism or muscles or broken legs as long as it is not stiff and filled with energy.

There is no argument.

I think the pose is fine for what it is and you are free to red line as much as you want. Obviously you are quite skilled at anatomy but it's not very useful for me since that's not what I'm working on.

It is funny to me however there are people who just mindlessly hop on the anatomy bandwagon and end up indirectly criticizing on Yoh's work, and if they humiliate themselves in this thread that's a bonus. I mean his pose isn't perfect but it's still miles ahead of the /beg/ level of this thread.

You really should check yourself into the /beg/ thread.

According to you, the abdomen is crushed between the chest and pelvis is too acute. Then why is it when I move her leg up it improves the pose? Leaving even less room for the "crushed" abdomen. You can't even observe the obvious when you have both the pose and drawing next to each other.

PS: post your work means post your work (you know stuff that you've drawn), not your idiotic thoughts onto a picture. Don't bother replying unless you post your actual work, because I won't bother replying.

The problem was not the height of the legs, but the implied tilt of the pelvis which is slightly more fixed in this iteration. Look closer at the angle between the rib cage and pelvis

But in any case it looks like you're successfully applying some of my advice there despite not wanting to admit it, so you still get some points for that. The construction is still off in some places, but you'll get there eventually.

Just work on your attitude, open your mind and you'll learn a lot faster. Good luck :)

Twitter is fine with porn but like someone else said, you can be gone at any moment. It's shitty as a platform but it's the "best" really. Instagram you can post SFW stuff on, nothing too risque but if you want to build a fanbase then it can't hurt there. This also has the added benefit of being able to report people that try to steal your work and post as their own/try to sell it. Shitheads impersonate artists all the time on social media platforms. Pixiv is another place, you can post porn but have to abide by Japanese obscenity laws, hence some censoring genitals but nipples are fine.

Everything sucks, you can host your own site to post whatever you want provided your host doesn't care. That's the only way to have a consistent gallery/portfolio. There are other porn places but it's all about what you want to draw. There's hentaifoundry and some other adult places but nothing has the reach that twitter and instagram do. I wouldn't recommend dA at all because as you said, trash.

I'd probably fall for your post if it wasn't for the fact that even beg tier illustrations have that same sense of it coming from outside of the West. I don't know if it has something to do with the line quality or the economy of lines or the way they imply shape and form with minimal details but the point is that even beginners have that same aesthetic that seemingly comes naturally from that region. I've heard rumors that it has something to do with they way their writing system is with lots of curves and showing emphasis on the minor details of their moon runes that makes big differences in their meanings and that somehow transfers onto their art.

There's an element of truth to that. They are surrounded by cute stylized things and faces. It's much easier to find things like that to draw there. More of it is taught to kids in their coloring, connect-the-dot, and sketching books. Does that mean Westerners can't learn it? Are you dense? They're lines on a page. You wanna draw cute? Draw cute. You want anime? Draw anime. You'll suck until you actually try to learn and not apply the half assed form of learning School forces us to adopt to art. It's hard work but plenty have done it. If you think being non-Japanese means you can't draw stylistically like them, you're actually not going to make it. What you do say and think effects how you perform. if you have never picked a pen before it's going to be a long journey this isnt something that you can just smash your head drawing 99999times and you are good, a lot of people are shit even after years of ''practice'', so be aware of that.

if i could go back on time and study correctly i would say that draw a box until you can grasp the forms of anything
then you can go with an anatomy book and then you can start stylizing with anime.

depending on how good you want be you can either focus more or less on some studies

like the other anon said your heads are far from good in the sense of having good proportions, and you are already trying to stylze.., all the heads except for the one at the bottom left, their expressions are not that bad, if you did these from memory, the problem is with the one at the botton left, i can see that you tried to keep the proportions of the mouth aligned with the face and nose which is good the problem is that you are drawing a SD(super deformed) expression like goku when he screams or retarded laughs, and in those cases you may need to choose if you want to keep it fully 3D proportianally or stylize it and omit some of the proportions, this happens a lot in anime drawings, like that infamous side mouth of k-on. In your drawing the mouth is too wide and it seems that it made you draw the face wider or is the mouth just to wide? it can work but you will need to know what parts of the face keep it correctly proportionally and which not.

i would recomend you to focus on your heads proportions first, they are not that bad tho.

in the green line you can see how the mouth doesnt follow the proportions completely, but the middle of the mouth is still aligned with the face.
your eyebrows make your face look almost like a flat surface which also makes it harder to read the expression. theres alot more but fuck it im going to sleep.

because anime is based on reality man, you take the shapes of normal peoples muscles and then simplify them
if you dont know anatomy you dont know in which way you should simplify, like the other anon said with your neck and arm

I don't know how to improve.
All I do is figure sketching on sketchdaily.net and copy anime.
I already learnt anatomy from hampton figure drawing and invention and I went through loomis' fun with a pencil.
I still suck.
What do I do now?

lines look scratchy, you need to be able to draw long lines and curves without picking up your instrument
lineweights are bad overall
head looks detached from neck
skirt perspective is fucked
her arms look flat
face looks flat and bland

other than that good job, keep at it
