>it sucks.
Your brain likes it because it doesn't suck. The composition is great in this shot because there are so many framing elements. The saturated red of the leaves in the foreground makes your eye start at the top and float down until your eye meets the top of the mountain in the background and as you follow it down you move more forward again as your eyes go to the city before being led to the bottom of the page by the still reflected water. It's pretty neat.

I'd like to be good at art. I intend to create ambitious projects I have in my mind, like a short animated film, a webcomic, etc etc, but the thing is, is that I only want to create these for myself, and not for others, really.

Is this a mindset I have to drop in order to survive in the art world? I can't see myself doing anything else in life as my projects are the only thing I aspire to do. I have the will to create, but I don't want to help fulfil another person's vision I have absolutely no interest in fulfilling.

It's basically bullshit. Light is always present so obviously you won't have 100% shadows. Ambient occlusion is the idea that light bounces from everywhere else so it lights up every part of the drawing. This might be confusing because it's like reflected light except artists will often put it as a separate thing. You can also think of it as a fill light as opposed to just your key light. This might help lighten your shadows up without completely killing them.

I go about drawing digitally by blocking in an extremely sloppy sketch that roughly captures the silhouette, then I do the actual sloppy sketch above that in a new layer. How is this sort of shading called and how do I learn it? Heavy blocky shadows, almost exclusively pure black, seen it mostly from comic artists.

Could've sworn it's called block shadows, but all I get is digital tools guides so probably misrembering.
High contrast gets me only shitty threshold'ed portraits (allmight in picrel is also like that, but he is better in the manga).
Chiaroscuro uses different values for shading.

I think its because people automatically assume "3d looks better than 2d" in some sort of subconscious level. For me I'm more inclined to play a 3d game over a 2d game. Of course if the 3d game looks like unreal engine crap or too badly done then the gameplay better be really fucking good (but in most cases, its not).
the only 2d games I play is VNs or 2hu while I listen/watch a video or podcast.

I feel like the indie game scene of npr is currently really weak. Its nothing but lazy low poly that uses flat colors and vomit some "its cel-shaded" excuse. I don't know if there's retro low poly yet like pic related, but sometimes seeing recent models like >>4235810 's pic is concerning.

I am having a similar problem so I sat down and tried to remember why I even want to grind fundies in the first place.
Then I remembered watching old design cinema episodes where feng zhu would take a book/old movie/old game and adapt them into his own ideas and style. That is really what I wanted to do before I started drawing. I wanted to take the images in my mind that came from reading or dreaming and illustrate them. I wanted to take the type of worldbuilding you see done on /tg/ and turn it into something that everyone can appreciate visually.
So then I looked around and found a book called The Skillful Huntsman by scott robertson, the how to draw guy, and it is a perfect practical example of a process to create something with all of your fundie grinds. It's in this pastebin here: https://pastebin.com/VG8dcWcf
Now I am still grinding fundies but I take time to read my favorite books that havent been adapted into anything and go through a process of designing characters/locations and then do some storyboards. Then turn some of the storyboards that I like into illustrations.

Acrylic is great, you can actually make them look like oils and they're much less hassle. Get some canvas, gesso, decent paints (they don't have to be expensive just not shit), cheap painters rags, pallet knife, maybe a pallet paper pad as well. You'll need a jar or something for cleaning brushes, and you're going to need some thinner for your paints.

Go to your local art store and ask them what they have that's cheap but still good. Make sure you don't buy student paints, tell them you'd like something with good amount of pigment. Even if you don't end up buying anything from the store you can at least get some guidance on what brands are worth your time or not.

Good luck!

Ive been doing comic book art for a while and wanted to start scanning and touching up, learning digital inking and share/submit it digitally. Id also like to be able to print off some non photo blue lineart to ink over and to apply a standard non photo blue template/gutter/guidelines since its cheaper to get bulk boards without the lines already on it. I use 11 x 17 strathmore bristol smooth paper from 300 series which lists at 100 lb / 270 g/m2 vellum.

What would be the vest printer for this type of work that has scanner and wide format functionality? Cheaper ones cant do thicker/heavier paper. Does laser printing matter? Im not doing any color printing beyond greys and non photo blue and want crisp black for any printed inks. Ive been looking at brother brands on amazon.ca primarily. Only find a few artists that list their printer scanners and they have $600+ USD printers typically. Im not a pro by any means but feel confident to be looking to publish in next year or so, but was hoping to get by with something cheaper starting out with digital work.

Architects dont need to be able to draw that well. Its more technical art that is a learned skill than creative. Actual job work is even more monotonous and cut and paste type "drawing". Learn revit and cad and youll have a drafting job instantly without making a single pencil mark. Get a udemy course for them off pirate bay and spend month grinding. Pick up a copy of Francid d k chings architectural graphics book. He has several different books with similar content. Architecture form, space and order is another one thats good.

Get a drafting table with parrallel bar and learn to use it and how to get different angles using your triangles. Pick up some mechanical pencils with different sizes and couple lead types for different line weights and sizes for your walls, stairs, etc on floorplans.

If your course wants that drawn, its a shit course teaching you useless skills that have no application to architects or our jobs.

Basic perspective and street sketching can help too, but arent inherently artistic so much as learned skills. Ching books have some simpliifed steps for showing how to break down a sketch of building and anyone can do it if they practice.

How can I emulate this style, specifically the line quality? You can see that there is a sort of effect where the ink "blots" as the pen hits and leaves the canvas, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create this effect digitally like this artist has. Another thing that really helped me was surprisingly a fashion youtube channel bu zoe hong. She teaches you how to make croquees (basically posing/figure drawing for fashion) and how to manipulate the proportions to get 10 head bodies and other sizes preferred in fashion world and how to take a pose and add dynamism to it and so on. It randomly came up recommended and i went through almost everything in her channel after. Very practical and easy to understand that helped connect some dots and push forward in my figure drawing.

I dunno squat about SAI, but if you have a way to change the brush dynamics, make it so higher pressure makes the line thinner. That way it gets thick at the end of the line when you lift the pen. Or if you have the option to map brush size to velocity, make it thinner when the brush is moving quickly. Most fake pen brushes I've used have some combination of those two effects.

Depends on the artist. their experience, mileage and workflow. Here is some non retarded advice. If you're not a veteran professional don't benchmark yourself against that. As a less proficient artist you will be slower on all marks. Speed will come naturally as you become more adept at the craft so focus on properly learning stuff to the point it becomes second nature. However I will warn you, Amazon employees are more concerned with speed than they are with being careful with items while they're stocking or doing any semblance of quality control, so make sure you inspect things like paint tubes for punctures and sketchbooks for bent up pages. Study chains, find photos of real chains and draw them, look at artists who draw nice chains and see how they tackle it. There's not really any quick tips or tricks that are worth learning you've just got to study them yourself if you want to draw them well.

Okay so in CSP I could make this using a watercolor brush and editing in the settings to have a splatter shape?

>> No.4242528

>>4242516
I don't use CSP so I don't know exactly how you need to go about it. In Photoshop you would make a brush like that by getting a high-res photo of splatter that you like in black and white, and then setting that picture as your custom brush or tool. If CSP has the ability to make brushes from textures, then I assume you'd approach it the same way. The splatter you choose is what gives it the shape, brush settings are usually more for things like opacity control and size jitter.

Maybe you should look into CSP splatter brush tutorials and see how they do it. I wish I could be of more help to you.

Also the big splatters are likely the same texture as the small lines but they look like they have different settings, so they'd probably be two different brushes.

So, I'm a fucking retard when it comes to perspective but there's this one question that I think I know the answer to but just need affirmation.

In Ernest's drawing, the line represents the eye level, which is understandable enough. Yet, I can still see the subjects below that eye level too. Like, I can look down, look up, look left of that image. I thought that if I looked up, then the eye level changes.

Does the eye level mean the height of the eyes? And not the direction it's looking at?

I just tried out Corel Painter, and with 10 layers I'm using ~40% of CPU and 3,2 gigs of RAM. (I don't normally use my desktop for drawing, I use an Ipad)

The reason I'm asking is that I am in the market for a laptop as I'd like a more lightweight solution as a computer, but I don't want to be buying something that can't run photoshop, so realistically, is 16gb of ram and something like a 4-core CPU ok, or do I benefit from more ram/better cpu?

It's your time that gets wasted if they don't pay, it's your reputation that is risked if you don't complete the art, and it's relatively easy to chargeback. You have more to lose at every step.

I've seen people get rough sketches, cancel their order, and submit the art to threads for color requests to get completed art for free. That is when they don't just take the art and run or chargeback.

-Study photographs and identify the perspective used, the horizon line, the vanishing points of large structures in the photo. Then try to redraw the same environment from a different angle. Redrawing 2 point as 1 point or different angle in 2 point. Imagine you are moving throughout the environment or you are moving a camera, whatever helps.
-Study objects and break them down into basic 3d forms, so basic that you can remember them and redraw from your head. Then draw that object from multiple angles in perspective, side view, upside down, tilted etc.

For both of these you can make very basic blocky models in sketchup or blender and correct yourself with overlays.

Then for more enjoyable exercises you can start imagining scenes or environments from a book/movie/game/real life whatever and start drawing concept art or background art. Design your ideal art studio, ideal bedroom, whatever. Just get drawing in perspective asap so you can see what you need to improve on or ask more questions.

In the past I had trouble drawing human bodies from imagination in dynamic poses and interesting angles unless it's something I learned to draw from reference or instruction previously.

So I tried constructing the basic body shape out of rectangular blocks. Not simplified anatomical shapes, not even like cylinders for arms at first, just elongated blocks with all right angles. It helped me a great deal with perspective, anatomical proportions, and foreshortening. Am I handicapping myself doing it? It actually doesn't really add that much time to the drawing.

new to digital art. Is the color added to this image on a layer underneath the "pencil mark" layer? Do they go over the color layer with an eraser tightening up the borders so it "fit" inside the pencil sketch layer on top of that?? What is the workflow here?
