Why is skill level of this board so low? Is it because good artists leave it once they get good or is it attracting mentally impaired people who can't improve? I mean being around you doesn't help anyone grow, honestly. I don't mind beginners because I was a beginner myself at some point but it is bad when the whole board is about beginners.

I really don't think you know what constitutes what a 'beginner' is.

If you go to /int/ or even /beg/ there are people with skill levels higher than the average of any equivilent site (tumblr, deviantart etc)

I think your perception of what a beginner is may be warped.

If you post good stuff 40% of what you get is beg trying to give you advices on stuff they have no idea about, 30% "blog?", 20% trolls and the 10% left is actual valuable critiqs.
So its not worth posting also considering the fact that you get your name associated with this trashy website.

Its a good board for beginners tho, there is really good ressources and people know in general how to study the fundamuntals. I'm glad I had it when I started.

For people who are almost pro level but still student my best advice if you want good critiqs is to find someone that is the same level as you (but propably struggle in different areas) message them and make friend with them so you can mutually critique each others.

There's 3-4 hundred posters on this board and around 500 more lurkers. Among the garbage, you can find ~20 people who are legit good at their craft.
To find 20 similarly good people on deviantArt, you'd have to search maybe 2000 random accounts.
/ic/'s trash to skill conversion rate is relatively high considering literally anyone can post here

It's self-deprecating fags trying to invade and shit up boards.

Look at /fit/ and /v/, with their "this place was always shit" mindset, how much on-topic discussion is actually there?
Compare that with /a/, /a/nons fucking love their board and will vehemently fight back against the above sentiment. The board is filled with new TLs, /a/ groups picking stuff up, and anons talking about Anime and Manga.

The cool thing about programming and other STEM fields though is that there actually are active forums where people discuss professional-level topics. The overall level of /ic/ is so low is because it isnt a board for artists, its for art fundamentals nerds. Good artists just draw and learn on with time and experience, they dont spend 4 hours daily drawing loomis heads or whatever shit is being shilled on this board, so they simply have nothing to look for here. Succesful artists are on social media posting their work and following other people. Why? Because there is a cancerous culture here that don't get what being good is. You got shitty threads like tower girls and many others, disgusting art drawn and painted solely to fulfil a sexual desire, by lonely cumdumps who have zero ambition with their work.

You don't just have to get better as an artist, part of that is maturing and realising that your artwork has more scope than being a cumdump.

BEING associated with this board is like having your reputation as an artist slammed into pig mud and and strapped into a public shitting receptacle.

Yes I'm a decent artist. No I won't post my art because I don't want the former happening to me.

Low skill level isn't a problem in and of itself. 4chan is an anonymous image board, and by design it has a very low threshold for participation. This naturally invites low-effort and unqualified posts. This also lowers incentive for skilled artists to post their work here; being anonymous is the opposite of what they need. That doesn't mean there aren't skilled artists here. They are in control of their level of participation.

4chan values open forum and ease of use over quality. Its history is communal rather than individual. Everything is working as it should. A rhetorical, passive-aggressive, useless post like your own would probably be stricken and land you a ban at other art community. You know why you're here.

I think the reason the board is perceived as low skill is because the amount of time someone spends here is inversely related to how good they are. When I knew very little I was on here every day, now I check in once or twice a month. And at that, I'm not even that good, so I imagine serious pros drop by like once a year for kicks.

Mods and janitors practically abandoned this place. Within the past 2 years it's gone to more shit. People don't want to deal with most of the shit that's here, I know I don't. Assorted serial autistic posters like Jimmy, Brian, illustrat, nazispammers, clearly /pol/ bait threads, off-topic threads that should be deleted, request thread, non-questions that are procrastinating just drawing, judge my drawing/shit that should be in the stupid questions thread instead of its own thread, social media drama. Delete this and you'd be left with like 5-6 pages of threads. Some of those threads are gone but still barely any mod presence here at all which means the board stagnates. The sticky is immensely outdated.

I browse a select few threads that tend to be up and are good resources. Once you've grabbed all the artbooks and stuff you need then there isn't much reason to stay. It's largely a waste of time. There are some good artists, there's good info to be had. There aren't any other places that are good to talk about art publicly so you're left with the best of the worst.
