To me the main thing an art piece should strive for is beauty, and while I can't say I enjoy all of Ruan's art (partially for reasons you mentioned, where the artwork feels and looks shallow), he definitely has some pieces that look great.
The artwork you used in your comparison for instance is one such piece, and is far more beautiful (and I'd even argue more evocative) than Caillebotte's painting.

I don't want to sound like a Ruan Jia apologist, but I also find the comparison between kpop music and his art a little off, I feel like you're memeing this point in.

I never said that Ruan Jia is breaking any molds. I said that the basic appeal to authority has been used against many things that break the mold, including the current "in" subjects; it doesn't mean much.

It's true that his works don't contain any deep symbolism, historical references or clever commentary, but he is incredibly skilled. I dont have anything against RJ and I was the main guy who constantly "shat" on him, it is just your guys' completely ridiculous and superficial wanking over high res files of work that truly is not very good in any way besides rendering, I mean the constructions arent too good, the compositions are bottom of the barrel action film screenshot tier, the anatomy is often wonky and his style and general (anti)taste in scenery and characters is appalling.
I enjoy Ruan Jia for his technical side, he is good in his own way, but lets not pretend that his art nurtures anything in you aside from the "I have to slave away 14 hours a day of digital painting a day" side of your brain.

I get it, he is good at rendering, I like how he implies shapes and a certain softness of materials, and yeah, he does spend an absurd amount of time on micromanaging his work, but his work itself is utterly boring, no finished piece of his will give you any emotion other than envy; envy of his technical proficiency.
