What are the professional rates to charge for portraits? Are there any guidelines regarding this topic?

>> No.4218488

John Singer Sargent used to charge the equivalent of 300 grand for a portrait. So considering all the factors and that you are asking in IC, I'd say you should charge nothing and be greatful for the experience of someone staying still for you or blessed that they sent a photo of them to your cumstained, pen deathgrippring fingers.

A pencil portrait typically runs somewhere about 500 euros. I imagine paintings are pricier.
I honestly doubt you can get more than 200 for digital unless you’ve made a name for yourself.

Yeah yeah I should have mentioned that I want to do digital portraits but I am not sure how much I should charge for them

Never forget basic economy 101

Supply and demand and hourly wages.

Know how much time it takes you to finish a work. Know if that timeframe is reasonable. Then know the minimum wage per hour in your country. Now do the hours it takes to do a portrait times the minimun wage. Add a 5 percent and you have a baseline

This is where supply and demand comes in. If you have too many clients, up the prices. If you don't have as much as you want then get lower towards the baseline. A facial only portrait should NOT take you more than 12 hours if you want to be competitive.

Speaking of supply, you need to supply something that a photoshop filter can’t. Very few people who are going to pay decent money for a portrait, let alone a digital portrait, are going to be impressed by generic mixer brush vomit

I mean, I could see myself paying for it, but the question is how much?

Digital portraits ?
I don't think you'll be very successful. People who want portraits done want a physical object to put on their wall.
Or so I imagine.

Okay another thing to remember about Singer Sargeant. The people who usually want drawn portraits nowadays are narcissitic to the bone.

Sargent, besides being a master painter, used to make a performance during his live paintings to entratain and make the person feel important. It is said that he used to make all sorts of faces and lunge at the canvas with a bursh to make it more of a "performance" and say to themselves "WOW a real ARTIST is painting ME with all sorts of emotion WOOOWEE!"

So, remember, make the person feel special first, art second and you'll get the big bux

just one artist's page but I see similar prices listed, for popular artists, this is what they charge for already made pieces on their store, and they don't disclose what it costs for a commissioned portrait. If you're working in digital, you're going to probably be charging a 10th of this.

Sargent was also a major celebrity at the time and his friends were all celebrities and social elite. It was also the gilded age and industrial revolution so there was tons of mega rich new money type who wanted to emulate actual royalty and nobles by paying top dollar for portraits by top celebrities. It’s like if Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk paid Taylor Swift to write them a song.

Now I can’t stop thinking about what a Taylor Swift song about Bezos would sound like

I googled her and she a bunch of her reviews mentioned art festivals. I would bet a large number of sales are due to being personable and chatting up boomers.

That’s an excuse based on nothing but negative thought patterns, which gets you nowhere in life, if you’re charismatic and have good business skills then there’s no reason you can’t, if you don’t have these qualities then maybe you need to hire someone to sell for you. Besides the point, it’s not hard to be better than her anyways.
