some little crits, but it is pretty good:

the mouth is facing in slighty different direction than the nose, and the space on the left of it is too big (you probably felt it too, because it seem you reworked the area.)

you are missing a concavity on your right eye, the one on the left under the eye (and you could push the one above too). I think adding it would help sell the structure of both the eye and nose.

in term of value, the eyes are way too dark and distract from the light from behind contrast of the original picture. also your hair look flat, sadly I have no real solution for that, because I usually suffer from the same issue ...

for what it's worth, my anatomies teacher used to say that we tend to work our own feature into portrait, and that you have to work hard on auto-portrait to get rid of it.

I just took a new look at it, before I read your post and noticed problems with the mouth and chin (should be slightly moved left) and the eye's shadow (extended under and to the left, darkened just above the top eyelash).

As for values, I agree, but I want to mention that they look better on paper.

There are many methods to construct the base of your drawing. While Loomis is great for breaking into art, as you go on i'd suggest experimenting and try making your own method.
Why do you think there are so many methods out there? People are different, what something works very well for someone maybe for others won't work the same way. Try finding your own thing, what makes it easier for you to see the form. Experiment, doodle over pictures see what works best for you and what not.

Please stop doing value stuff. It's evident by your blog that you have very little grasp on color, and it's something very common with people who develop the bad habit of overusing value.

Color is made of three elements: Value, Chroma, and Hue. Even a small change in any of these and it creates different edges and contrasts. Doing value-only is a lot easier because you only have to deal with the one dimension of variance, instead of the original three which are exponentially more complex. Problem is, people get into the habit of doing value-only stuff, which then makes them believe they are better than what they actually are. This delusion is broken when they attempt using color and realize their skill level is significantly lower than they thought, which then causes them to go back to doing value-only stuff in order to protect their internal ego resulting in a vicious cycle of ngmi.

You've done enough value. 90% of your blog is value. Now stop and never do value-only again unless you wanna suck at color forever.
(By the way, starting with value also counts in the value-only bad habit, so don't even think about it. Start straight with color.)

>There are plenty of artist with careers that don't rely on color.
There most certainly are. I've seen many professional artists who suffer from this actually, where their colors are really subpar in comparison with the rest of their work. I just think it's a shame because you can really tell how much better it is when someone masters color. I don't even mean colorful paintings, but the mastery is apparent even with more muted tones like pic related.

Yeah I know you were told that, doesn't make it true though.

> In fact it was said that colors are all about value and the part about what color to choose is more of a stylistic choice rather than anything else.
This is absolutely demonstratively wrong. Value is just one element of three that make up color. You can significantly alter an image by just changing Hue and Chroma without even touching value, like in pic related. If what you said was true, that wouldn't be possible. There's a reason we evolved to see color, and that is because variance in hue and chroma make different contrasts just like variance in value does. Learning to manipulate the relationships between the three elements is what we want, not ignore 2 of those primary elements and pretend the knowledge of them will just magically and naturally come once value is mastered.

Value is simply the lowest common denominator of an image. You can have something that's readable just by value alone, unlike hue and chroma. Am I saying you should never study value? No. Am I saying value isn't important? No. What I am saying is that relying on value as a crutch will never let you properly learn how to do color, which is it's own separate beast. It's also a funny coincidence that most of the best artists when it comes to color always just jump straight into it.

The best exercise I've found to learning color is to look up an image or painting you like the colors of and do a study of it straight in color. After you're done, close the image and the study, and try to create an original piece of work with the same palette and color relations as from the image you studied. When you're doing the study, you can loosely color pick the image you're studying to check what the colors in the image are and how they relate to each other, but you can't color pick and then apply what you picked to your study, you have to select the colors manually from the wheel/slider/whatever you use.

The reason I like this exercise is because you have a frame of reference you can compare your final result to, that being the image you originally studied.

Value is learned first for a couple reasons, every color can be broken down into value so color becomes much easier to work with when you know how to place value properly. charcoal is much cheaper than paints for learning and you can do more within the same amount of time. Removing an extra fundamental, one that doesn’t matter until foundation is strong anyways, makes learning easier.

neck and jawline are a bit off. Also the depth of the eyes looks flat; the apex of the curvature of the top eyelid peaks too late moving left-to-right, making it seem like the iris is deformed; also the iris is slightly too large. The tracheal canal is cylindrical, not concave or bifurcated like your rendering makes it look. Where the upper lip meets the right nostril you have a line that is supposed to indicate the presence of a secondary light source, but instead looks like a scar or a pouch/fold where soft tissue is flowing over it down towards the upper lip. This should be lowered and made more subtle like in the photo. Also work on eye alignment by imagining the head rotating in 3d space and determining specifically where the right eye should be, first without using the reference, basic forms, and then cleaning it up with the reference. Work on proportion of head to neck.

I think their general symbol/image of what they see as an average faced got overlayed on top of it, anon probably looks at himself in the mirror a lot and he unconsciously "wrapped" the girl in his own facial characteristics. I do this a lot, I always draw the nose too long and big because I have a huge long fucking nose.

Trying to get back into drawing. Been away from the tablet for nearly a year.

Her facial proportions are off, her chin/jawline is too big, and her neck is too short. My linework has improved but there's still too much chicken scratch. Overall, not bad for my first drawing in a long time.

Did one with values. It's still bad, but my previous ones look obviously worse.

Have been watching Bucci and Huston's head videos while practicing. They are pretty damn great.

I'd recommend learning edge control and looking into tangent control.

Tangent control is just getting your perspective right, a tangent is just an edge. Your values aren't professional, but they're not beginner either you're intermediate. Recommend getting your perspective to intermediate level too.

Remember.
First comes perspective, then value, then colour. Work structurally, go back to line drawings and nail them, overlay your copy with the source material a couple times during your study to make sure you're on track.

I learned so much about tangents and perspective by overlaying my work and no its not cheating.

Keep going anon.
I believe in you.

Always draw zoomed in so much that the end result is tiny and low quality
It’s a really bad habit
