I see the origins of a very very cool artstyle here but you need to work on your line weight more. I like the scraggly lines that suggest the violent undulating wrinkles in the face. but you need areas of thicker and thinner lines to keep every tied together, now it just looks messy. Even having a strong outline around the silhouette would look better at this point.

The shapes are the same as a realistic eye, all the elements are there, but it's all flattened and simplified and the way things like highlights are arranged inside the iris are dictated by design rather than a light source. I think you would be better off copying the artist who draws them the way you like them.

That's what I did but when it comes to the eyes, I just have to zoom in and copy. I can't really understand what they would look like in 3d the way I can with the rest of the face. So I feel like I'm copying rather than learning.

Just keep practicing it anon. Try to overlap the drawings and compare the proportions. Women's jaws are not that narrow, just more rounded. Use a set of parallel lines to align the features (every part of them, eyelids, eyebrows, but also the irises and pupils align no matter the direction). Also watch out the general shape of the iris as it still goes elliptical in perspective.

I use faber-castell 9000 8B, which I'm not a fan of, or 0.5 Pentel Ain Stein 4B which is almost as dark, I can't remember which I used for that. I would try Tombows or Mitsubishi but I can't splurge
I adjust the levels before uploading to kill the ivory paper and make the darks darker, so it's not a straight scan.

i find it weird how much my style changed when I got a toned sketchbook. I normally focus really hard on shading, but for these I went back to my traditional roots and really emphasized line. Made me rethink how I draw digitally, and work on line quality again :)

I was in the same position, only ever drew with pencils and pens, staying away from brushes and painting as far as I could. But to be honest, once you approach it differently, it really just feels like the next step of drawing. You can draw some underlying structure and then start working with whole surfaces instead of just lines like with pens. Just watch some youtube videos of someone skilled and then get motivation enough to buy some nice colours. That shit really isn't cheap unfortunately, but it made me use them a lot more as a side effect I guess. Granted, I'm still very much of a beginner in it, but I'm surprised how much of your drawing skills carry over to painting once you get the basics of the medium down.

Basically, your face is a bit wonky, bring measuring and proportions in to your work and you'll notice the difference. Your shading/hair is already really good imo, hair is something I struggle the most with.
