How do you guys get idea what will you draw (drawing from imagination)?

I have big problems imagining in my mind, so i scrable down some SUPER RANDOM strokes in thumbnail size and then try to see the story/concept/character in that.
Pic. related is one example how i work.

The reason i would like to know what is your process when it comes to drawing from imagination is because i think mine is not the best. It seems way too random.

I have the same process and I think it sucks as a go-to. Good thread idea.

i forgot to add..
2. picture is the faze when i would start looking for reference pictures and study all objects in composition and then refine that scribble drawing.
The 3. pictures is just 2. version but for color map

your process reminds me a lot of Robotpencil, he does something similar.

I like to come up with concepts by imagining ideas as bricks, and then taking them apart into fundamental elements and rebuilding them

Yeah dont get me wrong, obviously this work process is not my idea. I've seen a lot of artist working like that BUT i think they have much better idea about concept/story.
I believe (they usually say so) they see picture first in "mind's eye".

Sometimes I like to play The exsquisit corpse with myself. Just string nonsense words together and try and make a picture from it.
Surrealist had a lot of little games like that.

Try listening to a song and draw what comes to your mind.

I look at lots of drawings and photos and I read lots of wikipedia articles and sometimes I see something that looks pretty, and I decide I want to try drawing it in a piece

I would get a theme and idea first, then shit out a lot of thumbnails and thoroughly judge each one of them if the composition is good and well balanced and is easily read.

Dali would sit on the edge of a bed holding a spoon over a pie plate, so every time he nodded off he'd wake himself up and imiditly draw what he was dreaming about.
Max Ernst invited frottage, which is placing paper over an object and shading over it to get shapes, that he'd turn into paintings. Also was in to collage.

Word association, for one. Writing lists of words that come to mind and pairing any two or three words to see if the combined mental image interests me. If I like the idea I'll simulate more images, think of more things I could add to it. Sometimes I do this shortly after waking up. This helps me to recall the dream, and the words from these sessions are always more charged and potent than what I'd think of while wide awake.
To be honest though, I've made few actual images through that method. Still, it's a good brainstorming exercise to put you in a creative, lateral-thinking mindset.

When it comes to do actual work, what usually inspires me is a simple but compelling image. An animal or a shape or an object. Water guns look cool. I'm always trying to find a way to put a water gun into my drawings. Whatever else goes into it serves to complement the image that sparked the idea.
Basically, figure out what you like and what you like looking at, and you'll never have a shortage of things to draw for too long.

That's good technique.
I've seen people use it before, even on this board (like that bird, melon, crone thread)
