This painting of Jesus Christ, created by Leonardo Da Vinci, was sold for $450.3 million dollars, to the king of Saudi Arabia in 2017. What are your thoughts on this painting? How does it make you feel that you will never sell one of your paintings for a million dollars, let alone one penny. Isnt this idolatry in Islam? They will probably destroy this painting.

Just wondering, what the fuck does jesus have on the left hand. It cannot be glass since the light doesn't reflect in the painting. And the white three dots? Is it supposed to be the universe? Thats a lazy way to portray it.

Lol same bait everyday. My holy sacrament.

No, it isn't idolatry because Muslims don't worship Jesus as the Son of God, he's just recognized as a prophet. Besides, how pious do you think a Saudi king really is?

Most artists don't ever see the millions their works sell for, even if still alive. Has nothing to do with being beg tier ic artist.

>>4195659
It's not lazy you ngmi. Should be subtle so it doesn't overpower the face and hand. Check out how he rendered the rough surface along the right edge.

1. It's fake.
2. It was only "sold" to mask a transfer of half a billion dollars when actually, something else was bought for that money.
3. Yes, this is some 007 tier shit.
4. This is mostly the case when ridiculous sums are paid for art or other stuff.

>No, it isn't idolatry because Muslims don't worship Jesus as the Son of God

Muslims would consider depictions of Jesus by people who recognize him as the Son of God as idolatry though. And that's already an extremely charitable view of paintings in Islam.

I'm assuming you are Catholic yourself? How do you go about viewing religious art? Is it like a weekly rumination thing or is it done at random?

You make a good point, and strict Muslims might adhere to total aniconism (as well as Muslim cultures of the past), but the majority don't seem to give a fuck, there's figurative art all over the Muslim world. Ok, but you're right, less so of Jesus. I didn't know this, but it would be considered worst than figurative art in general. When you read the Quran you sorta get the feeling that Jesus was not really a big deal, so that's what I assumed.

I'm a godless heathen. I view religious art often, but at random, usually as research tangential to something else.

if you interpret his message as 'god is a part of me, and im here to tell you god is also a part of all of you', instead of putting him on a pedestal for somehow being closer to god than us, then yeah.

Actually he did dumbass there is literal proof he did, now if it's the same guy that did all the miracles etc. THAT can be argued but that Jesus and his mother Marry didn't exist is a fool error.

Right, that's how I felt the Quran was teaching it. My point being that I'm therefore surprised that it's true that a depiction of Jesus is often seen as idolatrous like one of God or Mohammed. From the perspective of a Muslim, Jesus, not being God or of God, is not one you worship, so it's just a painting of a regular guy. So you'd think it wouldn't be seen as idolatrous, at least, not in the hands of Muslims.

So are painting/depictions of humans haram or not? I was under the impression that strict muslims would not want pictures of God, Jesus or whatever. I never understand when I see ultra religious ones in major art museums, surrounded by huge Rubens paintings....

I like this more than most other 'Leo's'. So if it is a fake I'm ok with that anyway.

Thought I'd read recently it was going to re-appear for the Paris exhibition?

I am the original responder who said muslims would consider depictions of Jesus as idolatry. I spoke with someone, these quotes should help.

>The Prophet raised his head and said, "Those are the people who, whenever a pious man dies amongst them, make a place of worship at his grave and then they make those pictures in it. Those are the worst creatures in the Sight of Allah."
>Let there be curse upon the Jews and the Christians that they have taken the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.
>Beware of those who preceded you and used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship, but you must not take graves as mosques; I forbid you to do that.

In other words, people who venerate the righteous but don't actually emulate their behavior are cursed, and since people are always forgetting stuff, future generations will naturally venerate depictions of the righteous because they'd have no clue what they were like. Muslim countries have depictions of humans everywhere since it is a necessary means of communication. But God knows best and all that.
