is it wrong to pretend you're getting commissions?
would it be reasonable to assume every artist has done this at least once?

I'm probably never going to try to sell commissions

Yeah, just do like MilesDF and pretend to sell drawings for 5k. Get lots of free attention

milesCDMX unironically sells art like pancakes because it looks appealing

are you retarded? what fairytale fantasy world do you live in anon?

it's the most normal fucking thing in the world. everybody does this. i get $300-$500 per commission and post around 12 pieces per month. of those 2-4 are commissions, and the rest are 'commissions' by 'an anonymous commissioner'. it's how you advertise that you do commissions and can deliver quality matching a clients briefing without putting people off by seeming desperate.

I've never done this, even when starting out. And I get plenty of commissions, both NSFW and SFW.
Seems kinda sad that you'd pretend you're getting work. But hey, maybe it could work for you.

i don't anything yet, I am still /beg/
this concept just crossed my mind

I don’t see why most people wouldn’t do this. It’s an easy way to advertise that you’re doing commissions without sounding desperate. People are also more likely to commission you if they see you posting commissions all the time.

Not very honest (like the guys who write "just a quick 5 minutes hands free doodle") buuut I might use it if classical ways don't work.
Social proof clearly has influence.

The difference is that the “5 min doodle” thing discourages other artists and inflates your ego. Saying something is a commission when it isn’t doesn’t really hurt anyone.

Speaking of weird shit artist have done anyone have that old deviantart post of people faking art theft for free advertisement.
