Is art school worth it or am I just a fucking idiot who is going to spend 30k per semester next year? Do I neeed art school if I want to get into story boarding and show design?

>> No.4157181

if you're going to art school without a scholarship and you're not a trust fund baby yeah you fucked up

So you’re saying I should drop it before I actually pay 35k? I am not a trust fund baby. Is there a cheaper alternative?

A school is primarily a context that forces you to work on your craft (especially in art/graphic design and such). Courses usually won't help you that much, only mileage can.

No amount of money is gonna help you draw better and you sure as hell can't count on teacher to help you if you don't actively seek their attention and show good work ethic anyway.

>is 30k worth it

I'd avoid putting myself in crippling debt for a discipline that is overly overcrowded. If it's that or self learn go self learn.

This isn’t mine but it is my current quality level. On phone so can’t post work.

How crowded we talking? I did research and it didn’t seem super flooded. Are you saying finding a job drawing for fifteen am hour is unrealistic or more like trying to find permanent work is the expected outcome?

What school is it? In my experience a degree will assist you in getting a job, but portfolio is still most important.

I was gunning at savannah and NYU art departments but I am unsure if these would be acceptable choices. NYU would be tuition halved cause resident.

Are you not accepted yet? I'm not sure I understand why you said 'drop it' if you're not already in?

I am accepted by NYU, but not savannah. Again I don’t know if this is a good idea I just don’t wanna lay down the cash if I’m going to not find work anyway.

It completely depends on what you want out of it and who you are as a person. 30k doesn't sound worth it in the age of the internet, though.

Clarification, awaiting Savannah’s response.

Don't fucking do it OP, going into debt over education is never fucking worth it. I don't think art degrees even help you that much in getting a job, just try to improve with all the resources you can get online for free. The only things that are worth spending money for when trying to improve at art are art supplies and books. Nothing else.
Go to the Video course thread too. >>4154583

I am a socially awkward person but can fake normal social interaction okay. I just want to actually be able to work at Cartoon Network or nick or Disney or any other hub.

Maybe look at internships instead at smaller studios and get experience in the field all while honing your craft obsessively. There's a lot to be said about independent work, too.

I will take your words into consideration, I only would pursue cause I have no online presence and was told networking is how you make it in life. Well I don’t know anyone, certainly not other artists. I will read the thread you linked too, just bookmarked it.

Would you say that 15.00 an hour is asking to much if you have no degree or don’t know anyone? I am willing to work above average hours with no overtime to just draw for money.

>> No.4157224

>>4157175
Yeah, I don't know OP. I went to and graduated from art school, but I had a big scholarship and got a job in the industry immediately. I know a lot of people who did not have the same luck as I did and they regret their decision to enter art school though. It's really a "your mileage may vary" situation.

I mean, it depends what level you work at and how much you value your skill and time. I don't really know how to answer that.

Did you get the job because of networking or merit? Are all the people who got ducked worse than you or some are better? Does it really boil down to networking?

Merit. Cold-called with a portfolio.

Is like to be a storyboarder, concept artist, or drafter. I don’t mind working at smaller studios if I can make at least 15.

Oops, I forgot to answer half of your question because i'm stupid lol

>Are all the people who got ducked worse than you or some are better? Does it really boil down to networking?

It depends what you mean by 'good and bad'. Some people are very technically skilled but not in ways that are applicable to certain jobs. I work specifically in concept art, and I have some friends who are technically more skilled than me but make less-applicable work to concept art itself, so they don't get hired.

So the networking didn’t even come into play? You just showed up with a portfolio and you got a job?

Thank you for this information, should I specialize my portfolio if I want a specific job then?

>> No.4157239

>>4157234
Well, there was a long interview process. But since you asked if it was through connections or merit, the easiest answer was 'i got the job through my portfolio alone'.

>>4157237
Of course, anytime anon. It's a really hard decision to make, I was really scared too when I was first deciding whether to go to school or not. And absolutely! Your portfolio should mirror EXACTLY what you want to be doing and if possible the specific company you want to be at.
