A gesture is made up of simple 2d lines done quickly to convey a sense of energy, you can build forms around the gesture with contour lines like Vilppu does. That takes a lot of practice with getting a good base gesture though

Look at your models; get used to measuring before drawing anything on paper. Learn anatomy while your doing your 30 seconds poses (also add more time if you feel like you don't quite understand the pose) - shit like perspective, foreshortening, anatomy, form are things you need to keep in mind. Even understanding line weight can help flesh out your poses.

From what I can see, you need to focus more on the lower parts of the poses, you completely either ignore or rushed them, take your time (again, add more time if you feel like you don't grasp the pose quite yet)

It's nice to get the gesture down quick, but it all falls apart when you start incorporating 3d forms on them.

Take Vilppu's NMA class. Draw less, study more.
Drawing is a mental activity first and foremost.

>> No.4147365

So i have this little problem. I draw everyday, but at free weekends i draw almost for the whole day (sketching figures, gestures, maybe some objects etc). Here is the kicker: i erase a lot, and because of that in the end of the day it looks like a drew just for a little bit, which is disheartening. (I won't present any work, bc it isn't about my level, i study, i go further, every month i improve.) That's the first thing about this that buggers me: after a lot of drawing there isn't much pictures left, literally. The second thing that buggers me, is when i scroll through pinterest i see a lot of awesome works, but when i start to look closely, i realise, that i would erase it before it would start to look good.
Maybe i am just a bit too anxious. Regardless, maybe someone can relate, or give some advice.

Finished and dropped off at the gallery. 20x24. I had to name it and one of the kids that was there said. The water will kill you. Kids are fascinated by space. Anyway. There were about 75 other entries into the contest. A couple were very good. Well done landscapes. A few still life of artichokes and asparagus. There were a couple really creative works there as well. One with a screen in front of the whole canvas but it was cut out where the a portion of a greens portrait was peering out. I liked that one the best. I’ll get some pics when they announce the winners. There’s a lot wrong with it still but the last glaze definitely helped it. The water looked much better in prior versions, but live and learn. I shouldn’t have messed with it so much. Anyway. Thank you guys for all the tips and I’ll know the results next week.

Help me, I am retard. I don't understand gesture drawing at all. Am I doing it right? Is this wrong? I don't know! These are 60 second gestures and I know I'm supposed to find the 'motion of the figure' which is what I'm trying to do, but how does that work with a still pose of a dude standing at attention? Everyone does it differently. Some people suggest going loosey goosey with minimal detail and chicken scratch, others suggest blocking everything in with proper shapes, another tutorial suggested to just spending 10 minutes on each one and recreate from life entirely which flies in the face of what literally everyone else says. I don't understand any of this!

You have the same problem as I do. You know how the body parts are structured, but when you starting to put those pieces together they look fucked up because the perspective doesn't match.
I suggest you practice by drawing front, 3/4 and profile T-poses and then trying to mesh different body parts together until it looks natural while referencing said T-poses.

Take your time.
It looks like you're trying to draw as fast as you possibly can, but you need to take your time to prepare each line before making them.
Be fast with making the actual line, take your time with the rest.

>> No.4151074

>>4151070
Forgot to mention, it's normal for your lines to be all over the place in the beginning even if you do prepare a lot.
The only reason I assumed you draw too fast is because on the superimposed lines your starting point is just as off as your end points (in fact I can't tell which is which for most of them) this usually means you didn't take your time to place your pencil on the start correctly.
Just keep practicing.

What do you guys think about using video games as references?
I'm thinking mostly as pose/gesture references, so not copying small details as 3d models in games usually tend to not be entirely correct or have clipping issues etc.

Good/bad idea? When I'm hunting for references for a specific action pose or whatever it tends to be easier to just recreate it in a game as opposed to finding a photo of that specific pose?

Apart from all the anatomical problems the gesture looks stiff and awkward. If you saw someone standing there like that irl what would they be doing? Clapping because they'd just shat themselves? That's the only thing that comes to mind.
You're so far off anatomically, but don't worry about that. I was the same and anons here told me to watch figure drawing tutorials on YouTube (Vilppu from New Masters Academy is great). You need to get a feel for the flow of the human body in motion and capture that. In my experience practicing this also helps you get to know the human anatomy better, but use nude/underwear models only!!! Clothing gets in the way of us begs and our ability to see and copy gestures.
Don't try doing 1:1 copies. Just capture the general feel of the pose/gesture amd in time your attempts will just naturally start to look more accurate.

One half of 4chan is schizophrenic and the other half is trans (sexual schizophrenia).

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I've only started drawing about 2 months ago and have never really tried it before.

That explains it. I thought I could smell the stale saliva and vape condensation from the inside of Guy Fawkes masks.

Wow, you're 2 months in? You can definitely make it with some study. I think this is the first in the series that people here were recommending. I wouldn't bother trying to practice along with him. He's an expert so even his 1 minute figures will crush your morale if you try to do something similar in just 60 seconds. Plus the models he's using are too small on the screen for us to follow along.
But watch how he draws (mostly starts with the head then builds outward from the curves of the skeleton then adds contours and fills volume from there) and listen carefully to the things he says. Things like "then I go back in" hint at his process. You don't have to get it perfect on your first attempt, just the rough skeletal form and flow. Then you "go across the form" to add shape and volume or "go back in" to add details like creases or "pinches" as he refers to them.

these fucking construction circles make no fucking sense whatsoever
it's like these guys MAKING THE GUIDES ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DRAW AND ARE JUST PRETENDING LIKE THEY NEED THE CONSTRUCTION TO DRAW!
"Just place this line here bro and then this one and then draw another circle here and now you're done with the construction of the face!!!" THERE IS NO FUCKING LOGIC BEHIND THIS THEY'RE JUST PUTTING THE LINES WHERE THEY KNOW IT'LL BE CORRECT
