That's the point of inking, you can work on the sketching phase as much as you want, but if you don't have good control over your arm and are familiar enough with drawing from your shoulder, you're going to fuck up.
Either you work on your physical drawing skills, or all of your drawings are going to look like a 5 year old made them, no matter how complex the drawing might be.

You should try inking. It's not just tracing. It adds depth and shading to give the image more definition.
Old movie memes aside, it is really easy to fuck up inking and completely change what the drawing had going for it.
Can't remember which comic artist it was, but as I read one time:
"Inking is the phase where you ruin a perfectly good drawing"

Followed the official prompt list for the first one, will probably draw whatever as time goes on.

Btw, does anyone know of any artists who draw environments? Most of the artists I see participating draw portraits or tattoo type art, but I'd like some inspiration in the landscape department.

It's a really, really cheap brand of ballpoint pens that you can find almost anywhere. They are greasy and very smooth moving. But even excluding the fact that I don't measure up to the skill level of the image I would never be able to do something like this with Corvina pen cause they leak (there is a reason why they are cheap). So while it does allow a lot of line control from very light to very saturated you need to watch the pen like a hawk to get an image like this or you will get splotches everywhere.

>> No.4140972

>>4140969
Ohhh I see! Yeah I love drawing with ballpoint pens but I have to be really careful when using them knowing the fact that they leave splotches while I sketch, I got lucky with this specific pen though as it has pretty good ink flow. At first I thought you meant she looks like a character so I googled Corvina and only fish came up lel. Ballpoint pens are both a blessing and a curse.

dude, nothing is unique. i'm always so worried about "blegh creative & cool & my aesthetic bleeeegh". it can be really counter conducive to actually... you know... making shit.

think the goal of inktober is to push yourself, crank shit out, and maybe take style or technique choices you usually wouldn't. the 31 days of drawings is like that story of "1 perfect bowl vs 1,000 shitty bowl". so just commit and draw something, then immediately forget about it because you have a new drawing to start working on within 24 hours.

with ring you can do so many things - a halo, the game Halo. Sonic, planetary rings, a jewelry ring, a fairy ring, a bell (because it rings!), a boxing ring, something finger related because it ties into a ring.

the 1 bowl vs 1000 bowls is essentially "a ceramic professor split his class two - assigned 1 half to make 1000 bowls for the semester, and the other half to make just 1 bowl but it had to be perfect. at the end of the class, when he graded the final bowls, the bowls from the students that made 1000 bowls were higher quality than the students who were tasked to make only one." the idea is that by repetition and practice, you get better. not ever bowl has to be perfect, you just have to learn something from it. so go out, make shit, make literal shit art, and learn from it. the more you make, the more you learn. don't be so caught up in the idea that everything you make has to be incredible. we all make doo doo sometimes.

I just redrew my entry from scratch S I X T I M E S. No I won't post it because you'll hurt my tender feelings. First I got this sour feeling in my head, like there's a lemon rolling around in there instead of brain. I should have just posted the thing with a little error in there but nooo. Hours kept passing and I kept starting over. Spilled ink here, fumbled pen there. Then I got angrier and angrier. Now usually something self destructive like this would frustrate enough to make somebody quit. But I think something broke because now I'm too mad to stop. It's like I'm on skis going downhill. I will finish every single prompt this month sleep or no sleep, I'm so fucking mad I'm going to either draw nonstop from the moment this post sends or attack pedestrians with my dip pen

oh hi that was me. actual ceramic artist checking in.

what you're talking about is way different than the bowl story though. bowl story = idea of making something, even if it sucks for the sake of practice and skill building. you throw the bowl and you go "oh shit, i let my walls get a bit thin. well i'm going to finish it anyways because of 999 more to make, but something to keep in mind." and you happily carry on.

you're allowing yourself to be your own worst enemy - not allowing yourself to finish something even if you aren't happy with it.

you've got the idea - you mention it yourself.
>I should have just posted the thing with a little error in there but nooo. Hours kept passing and I kept starting over.
even with the fuck up, you just keep on keeping on and finish the fucking bowl. apply lesson learned to the next bowl. you don't sit and stew and self sabotage and start over. even if you turn in an actual lump of clay because the mistake was insurmountable, you still finish that bowl and move on. and let me tell you, i've learned way more from my failure pieces than my perfect masterpieces.

enough of the fucking pity party. be shit, make shit, and become more than shit.

the line quality is pretty choppy. you have pretty much the same line weight all throughout. the only like heavy lines seems to be in places where you struggles. this falls apart a bit around the hands, feet and hair - there's some pretty rough technique issues going on in those areas.

My day 1: Traveler
from the repurposed frogtober prompts. Gonna call mine cattober.
I never do backgrounds on pictures, so I’m gonna try and push myself to do a background for every prompt this year. Any advice on how I can improve my background on this one?

Decided to try and make a continuous story out of the prompts.

Just finished day 1 and I'm already feeling the burnout. Moral of the story: If you want to have a black background, use black paper.

It seems like not being able to log in/post pictures etc has been a problem across twitter since last night. I was all amped to make day 1 in the nick of time, but them's the breaks. I'll post 1 and 2 at the same time when it's fixed

Is it not better to at least want to try to get something perfectly right the first time though?

>> No.4142116

>>4142110
Of course you always aim to do the best you can, but you should understand when success is unlikely or impossible and accept that in the long term, failure is a necessity for consistent success. If your entire mindset revolves around getting the thing perfectly right (perfect=success), instead of simply doing the task for good or ill (task complete=success), you likely create a fear of failure (when not perfect=failure) and impede your own progress by making it less likely you will attempt it again.

Question. What kind of paper do you recommend using? Are you guys using both sides?

>> No.4142134

>>4142125
Just a random watercolour sketchbook. I'll doodle on both sides but if I set out to draw something more resolved then I like to leave the other side blank in case I want to scan or take it out of the book.
