You're asking the wrong question.
Why do you draw? To practice, or to produce?

And if the answer is to produce, you do it when it doesn't look good and isn't fixable. If you do it to practice, you salvage it as you can, take notes of your errors and move on.

he is just saying "draw more options", thats the video. Don't follow single methods, any artist should be doing a variety of jobs and exercises to make the brain more flexible, that's what it is, if you keep one thing, of course you can be very good at it, but it limits you.
Many people do not take it as a "production" job so you have what explains the guy of the video, that there are people who draw "intuitively" with fewer attempts, instead those who do not have "that" need practice and bla bla bla. It only describes that there is the type of artist who really does daily exercises, tries several sketches before the final one, constantly practices objects or parts or poses, and constantly tests.
It is only a video to point to those who believe that in fact drawing is just making the final drawing and that's it, that everything comes out by small exercises and following methods and all that, there are people who work like this, but it is not the average of the population, nor does that benefit those kinds of people.

I think it is a symptom of this disease of putting so many "cute sketches" in notebooks and all that, people think that even that has to look good and requires a technique or something

Now that i understand their form and volume and how it changes in action, how can i translate this into my drawing like not just blocking forms but making them feel like under skin and connected, like the upper torso for example how do i make it feel like one whole shape in final drawing.
I don't know if I'm explaining this right but whatever if someone understood what i mean please help.

Muscles under skin and fat lose their contours. Don't use any bold lines to indicate them but instead use tone and partial cross contour lines to describe the forms. The only bold lines should be in the spots of pinching, twisting, and in the outside contours where overlaps of volumes can be seen.

Examples of this in action: Pontormo, Raphael, Rubens.

For traditional painting, which of these limited palettes is best for learning and cost.
Artist Primary : Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, White
Split Primary: Warm+Cold Red, Warm+Cold Yellow, Warm+Cold Blue, White.
Secondary Palette: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, White.
I would default to artists primary because its only 5 paints but not sure how much im gimping myself on full hue range. It does make for a nice built in color gamut though for color harmony.
Split Primary seems to be very popular among good oil painters.
Secondary Palette seems to get the most hue range but you really dont need that much saturated orange and purple.

Also it matters which one I pick because I would use different pigments based on the palette to allow for hue range and complementary mixes to neutral so even though going from artists primary to secondary seems easy, you might actually be buying 6 new paints.

>Why does it seem so many people on this board are fixated on sex?
It's 4chan. It's a seething pit of virgins, incels, and awkward, lonely dudes, where everything eventually degenerates to sex, or jews.

We used to get at least one in every figure drawing class in college, the first day there's be some skinny or fat dude, blushing, not making eye contact, who was obviously there to see his first naked female for the first time. They usually got pulled aside for a talking to from the teacher, when they'd just sit and stare, and we'd never see them again. Or, the first model would be a dude, and they'd be gone at the first break.

There's nothing wrong with drawing naked women, or erotica, but I feel way too many here are only ever going to draw naked women (or attempt to), because it's cheap porn, or they have a fetish that can't be satisfied through porn. It's when it's obsessive, is when it's a problem. And, when there's no focus on the art, and only masturbating. Every other drawing seems like it's boobs they sweated over for hours - and the rest they scribbled in under a minute. Not hard to figure out what's going on there.

>(hint: literally everyone can fucking do that, it's not interesting nor will it be a viable way to make money)
That's exactly why Betty Edwards wrote the books. I went to college where she taught - her classes, that formed her study writing the book, were for non-art majors. (I talked to her many times, she was a nice person.) But - we couldn't take her class, if we were fine art majors. And, it wouldn't count as a core art class for any of the programs.
She'd display before/after drawings in the hallway, from previous students, showing people going from literal stick figures to finished drawings. Some of them were pretty impressive.
She was showing that the act of drawing is just a skill, and technique, and that most people are afraid of it, she wasn't training artists. The idea is you take her course to learn how to draw, as a non-artist - and then when you're done, use it as a hobby, or choose to pursue actual art education. They're not totally pointless for an art student, but they weren't written for them.

DrawMixPaint explains it for you. Black, white, and crimson, blue, and yellow are all you need starting out - and will work studying cool and warm hues. Mixed colors are for convenience, so you can spend more time painting, instead of mixing, or for some colors that can't be mixed with the primaries. Some colors are just easier to get a tube of, later on, like ochres, siennas, and blues.

WTF is up with color management?
Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it looks too saturated, sometimes it looks too dull.

Do I setup my software to use monitor color management? If I do that then the sRGB looks dull compared to my monitor range so when i export it looks more vibrant when the program or website do proper management. If I dont, then when I export firefox on some random places will make the piece look dull and SHIT.

Minimum for color management is a colorimeter, like a ColorMunki, but you don't want to go down that road. It's pointless to even try without one, and it's too complicated to go into here.

Set your apps to web standard, if that's where your work is intended for, and then adjust your monitor manually for white point, gamma, and contrast.

try to think of it in terms of rgb mixing instead of hsb.
it doesn't exactly do a shift towards grey, it's just that a warm or cool local color under a global light of the opposing temperature will be the coolest version of that warm light or the other way around.
there's also an idea from traditional painting that mixing with whites will always cause your color to cool down, this isn't entirely true with digital but there also isn't an equal amount of chroma for every hue across every step of the value scale, the link explains this all in more depth.

I remember seeing this answered in various threads, but I can't remember the answer and google isn't helping.

What's the term/technique related to having "unrealistic" color variation in a painting? Like when someone paints a landscape and adds small touches of bright pink, yellow, green, turquoise, etc that are obviously not present in the real life scene but still make sense overall.

I believe it was an Italian term if that helps.

>>4131429
Its very important. After all, your favorite artists most likely have done what you want to be doing so its best to learn whatever you can from them. However don't try to learn everything from any single artist, only what you really like about them and what they're the best at and then you won't pick up on their mistakes.

For example, if you'd wanted a better understanding of drapery and costuming you'd study Leyendecker. If you wanted a better understanding of figure drawing you'd study Michelangelo or Rubens. Note I say you should study people who are actually masters, not random amateur artist on deviantart who draws shitty anime.

Posted this in a dead thread and I still wanna know

For some reason ever since I was a kid I found drawing faces facing the right almost unrecognisable. They’d look off to me but no matter how hard I tried to take it apart I couldn’t pinpoint why they looked bad, then if I viewed them through a mirror I would instantly notice the exact errors. Because of this I just never practiced them since I found them so intimidating and now, even though I’m a lot more comfortable, they still look slightly awkward. On this topic, I noticed that whenever I make a composition I subconsciously favour the left side of the drawing and have everything almost lean towards it, when I flip it the other side looks really empty and careless. Is there a specific reason for this? Am I autistic??

i've found that working in greyscale is obviously the fastest way to learn value but it's tempting to just apply some local colors to your grayscale work without applying color theory. which is lazy and wrong. and makes your artwork look really washed out/weird

Buying an adoptable is essentially paying for the rights to use the design. Some look the same because they belong to a species, and back in the days, people would pay a shit ton of money to buy a design that belonged to a popular closed species. For example, see bagbeans. (pic related.)

>Do they want to create their own stuff with said character?

Yep, that's basically it. Some people just don't want to go through designing their own characters, don't have the skills to execute a deisgn nicely, or just admire the artist enough to get something special from them.

>> No.4134825

>>4134751
The airbrush itself? No. They're very useful if outdated art tools (they're still used by model makers). The problem is using them with poor ventilation, and not wearing a mask. You're breathing in paint, and paint has things in it you shouldn't be absorbing into your bloodstream via your lungs. A lot of the artists who used them in the 70's and 80's, when they were the most popular, didn't use proper ventilation or masks, and had serious health issues over it.
If you use it once in a while, with proper ventilation, and wearing a face mask, it's probably fine. Or build a spray booth like the model makers have, that pump the air with the paint into a filter.

The coil inside the pen is stuck. You'll have to disassemble it, to free it. There's no active circuit inside the pen to short out, if it gets wet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dbf63YnkeA&t=41s

the original video booty blasted digital people. soft airbrushes make for lifeless art. reliance on them shows no confidence in your strokes and makes for weak images. good painting is good design of shapes generally, so getting used to making choices puts you on a path to better painting instead of feathering over everything. soft brushes ruined over a generation of digital painting and makes art instantly recognizable as a certain kind of digital work. that sins video isn't gospel but many people break those rules and it makes for terrible looking work. you can do a lot with the hard round and it's good to learn. this video helps you learn to make better paintings that don't look as soft, sterile, and digital. the thumbnail is a good gist of the message. make less like the left, more like the right but be versatile and flexible based on the look you want.

I'm going in right direction thinking that when you wrap bands around object it starts to look 3d? What Steve Huston calls "movement over the form"? also is bands kinda placeholder for begginer artists, and in reality we talk here about shading, that will replace bands? Also stuff like end of the shorts that wrap around leg are essentially bands that create illusion of depth/ 3d form? Also Villpu draws one object over the other, and that creates illusion of forward/backwards?

please advice learning material on topic

While tone can describe everything of the above, it can't:

Help you relate one form to another in space
Help you construct complex form from primitives

I remember Peter Han saying about the dynamic sketching exercises its best to practice with the pen. The reason being you can't erase and you have to think to make every mark count, it builds your dexterity for mark making.

Digital is the opposite where you can scribble all you want and it doesn't matter because you can cover it with another layer. Not ideal for bettering your line quality because it can teach you bad habits if you draw mainly with digital.

I've always thought of limited value studies, such as the five value exercise promoted by Mullins, as only painting with perfectly flat graphic shapes of value with no blending between values. However, consider this video from Zin Lim:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BlpqCxxcEE

Is the difference here that Zin Lim is using five values as a starting point, and that only the block in stage is the same as the Craig Mullins exercise? Or are traditional painters using the term "value" to mean the general value groups/zones, with the transitional values as resulting from blending not counting?

Yes, stop overthinking. They are different types of study with the same foundations in limited value palette. Academic studies such as monochromatic painting like that Lim video or Bargue charcoal studies help you to simplify value groupings and concentrate on the contrast of edges/values. Mullins' five value study is for compositional purposes, to make for better graphic readings of illustrations. For studies, you should simplify what you are trying to learn so you have a clear focus on what you're practicing.

What do you like doing that people aren't covering? What do you wish you could watch on youtube that's missing now? I'd like to do that as well but I'd have to think long and hard about what I want. I like the higher quality stuff and wish there was more content like Sinix, James Gurney, Marco Bucci, etc., but there's only so fast you can make that and only so much to really talk about in a video. I much prefer their styles of talking over their painting because they explain the reasoning and give insight to what they were thinking or seeing. I would like to see more content like this which removes the "magic" of making art that a lot of channels leave to feel with emotion. Most artists (well, people) are terrible at expressing their thoughts with words.

You need to be able to handle (or hire someone) to do basics of production.
>script/pre-production of what you'll be showing and talking about instead of rambling nervously, helps with timing of sections to ensure not too long/short and gives you ability to edit out unneeded content
>clear, confident voice (good enough microphone)
>video camera with external lights or screen recording
>how to edit audio, compression and reducing noise
>editing video, color grading, transitions, b-roll, time warping, graphics/text over video
>background music/sound, music that won't get you copyright strikes
A rule of thumb for editing video is 30-60 minutes of editing time for 1 minute of video. That's normally involving a lot of cuts, but if you're showing a speedpaint/timelapse then it'll be a bit shorter. Keep in mind how long it takes to make videos. I'd recommend practice making a couple videos before uploading to see how you fare with the time involved and if they come out how you like. How many channels have you seen with a handful or less videos and no more? It's very easy to get overwhelmed and burned out unless you have a reliable process.

A question about sketchbooks.
I know that each sketchbook is personal and different. But I was wondering is it a good idea to place a few rules for the sketchbooks?
I know a lot of people panic over the first page, I was thinking maybe setting it as a rule page. Like, "draw more completed draws." And "draw more backgrounds." And is it more beneficial to have multiple sketchbooks at the same time? Like have one for studies and another for personal use.

I've almost completed my first sketchbook, I am excited. I don't think I have ever fully completed a sketchbook with at least something on each page. And I didn't tear any out, I scribbled them out. I consider that improvement. Are all the pages great? Not at all like 1 out of 15 is a actually completed drawing and not a study.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xHrOLzTLYI&t=3m14s

At the end of workouts, I do the standing wrist curl, reverse grip curl (and upper curl portion), and supported wrist curl extension. Standing wrist curl and supported wrist curl on one day and then reverse curl/upper reverse curl on the other day. Do it at the end of the work out because it really tires out your forearms, you can probably still do pullups after once you get used to it. On top of that obviously stretching techniques. You don't have to go that heavy on the weights, I typically do sets of 3x6 to 3x12 depending on how I'm working up (if x6 gets too easy then i up to 8, and so on. when i get to 10 or 12 i will progress to the next dumbbell weight and start at 6. My gym has 6, 8, and 12 lb dumb bells which are nice in-betweens for this. I'd recommend starting at 5 to be safe), I'm currently at 55 lb on the standing wrist curl, 25 on reverse curl for both, and 15 on the supported wrist curl but I definitely seeing diminishing returns in pushing much beyond these which the video alludes to. I'll deload and up the rep range when I start stalling.

wikiart is ok
wikimedia project is good if you know what you're looking for
>Japanese artists
you'll find lots of inks and woodblock prints but finding contemporary stuff is much harder ime

I have the hardest time getting ready to draw. Then when I start drawing it feels like my time is up. Then at work I could be drawing but I'm sitting there shitposting. And then at home I have so many chores to do I just want to get high and be left alone.

How do you soul search for your own "style?"

>> No.4150722

>>4150703
study styles you like. your style is just a mishmash of styles you like until you draw something you're happy with. and you don't have to have a consistent style, you don't have to stick to one style. just study what you like, study what appeals to you. your style will come.

QUESTION: when painting skin or people, when is it appropriate to use hard shadows over soft shadows and vice versa?

>> No.4150897

skin can see both soft and hard shadows, it depends on the intensity of the lighting, where the light is pointing, etc

what's up with all these twitter randos that have 'commissions open!' in their name, but their last picture that wasn't a reaction image or a bad meme is some shitty pencil sketch from 2018, which I only find after I scroll through their media for over five minutes.

I feel I should know this by now. But what does author of this video uses for creating smooth selections for ambient occlusion at around 1 minute mark. Is it just lasso tool? Because I feel that using lasso tool is making edge of selection too wobbly and using other stuff like magic wand make edge look kinda pixilated.
Also is there any good videos/tutorials/guides on edge control in ps?

I used to use Allpaintings.org years ago. It was basically a repository of, well, all the paintings. Listed by movement and then by artist.
Is it gone or am I just misremembering the url?

So has anyone completed DrawABox? I'm a brainlet starting from 0 but it feels like my time would be much better spent on Keys to Drawing or Fun with a Pencil. I'm on the last excercise of lesson 1 and it seems like I spent hours meticulously drawing lines instead of actually learning much.
