Because they don't read. They don't know they're supposed to read. They think the way to get better is to "practice," but nobody ever told them how they're supposed to practice. It's an effect of getting trapped in a vortex of idiocy, asking for help in the wrong places, and from the wrong people. He's just not a creative person. He couldn't have avoided this fate.

A retired graphic designer I used to work with once told me "anyone can be taught to draw, but nobody can be taught to be creative."

If you're brain can't generate good ideas, the best you can ever hope to be is a human copymachine.

I think this is why I don't try to improve past beg tier. I don't think I'm creative, so even if I put in the work, and develop advanced skills I'm never gonna create anything of value anyways.

>I think this is why I don't try to improve past beg tier. I don't think I'm creative, so even if I put in the work, and develop advanced skills I'm never gonna create anything of value anyways.
What a terrible mindset to have. Of course you're never going to be creative if you never try. Creativity isn't this magic gift dropped onto random people from the heavens, it's something everyone has within and just needs to be cultivated and developed. Little kids draw bizarre and imaginative stuff because they have no filter, you only think you lack creativity now as an adult because now you worry about making work that will be perceived as unappealing or bad.

You make me smile.

Perhaps, and call this an excuse, but I don't find improve, improve, improve, improve motivating.
I was trying to find something deeper in all this grinding, something real. When I didn't, I found myself depressed.

I've still got time to improve. You'll never draw what I've drawn and have the courage to post it.

Your view of what is good is what exactly? Everything perfect and pristine and realistic? Why not draw something erotic? Why not draw something sacred?

I tried to do something different and it went nowhere. I've never seen experimental art more so easily frowned upon than in /ic/. The people you have "guhrindin fundiez" aren't talentless, they're brainless. Do you really think there is a huge line for realistic painters? Did you ever stop to question?

I like my art enough to post it. I like my jesus, I like my stiff poses, I like my big titty animu gf's. I have to like my art to improve, that's just the way i'm wired.
If you don't like your art and use that as fuel to improve, then by all means, git gud.

*sigh* Not like anything I'm saying will ever get through to anyone full of malice like you anyways.

- it can take your mind off problems to give your brain a break
- it improves your cognitive ability
- you can make art you want to see exist
- people will find you more interesting for being able to do it

there's no deep philosophical understanding you gain by learning art. if you want that learn math and computer science. I do it because I want to draw big anime titties and cute girls

Left was one of the first times I made a conscious effort to improve my art by using reference and reading Loomis, believe it or not. I used reference for both of these, can't even fathom how I managed to fuck up left so badly. Since then I've dropped Loomis and have just been drawing from reference any picture that piques my interest once a month or so. I always found it easier to learn through experimentation, analyzing what I did incorrectly and what could be improved, and integrating that in the next piece I did. Something like that. I basically just spend some time looking at my work after I'm done with it and reflect on what I like, what I don't like, what works, what doesn't work, and then try to keep that all in mind for the next piece I do. Like the September piece I did because I realized a lot of my old works were very computationally unambitious, so I was trying to rectify that.
Whenever I realize I have some sort of glaring technical error, like perspective or anatomy, I try to crack out some books/guides and use them to draw another piece, but this time without the mistakes. Doing stuff like that helps me remember it better for the future than grinding out studies.

i think it's probably in large part because it's finished drawings compared with lighter sketches, you've definitely improved in terms of anatomy, structure, perspective, etc but i just really like the ones on the left better. they have a really charming style that i think is just sorta lacking in the ones on the right. i always hesitate to use the "soul" meme, but i think this is a good example of it - you've been working on your technique, which is obviously really important, but right now it feels like you're in the stages where focus on technique is ruling your work and you've lost some of the personal touch that was your style. don't take this too hard, because it's part of a lot of peoples' improvement process to put out work that looks good but feels sorta generic before the technical skills become second nature and let them evoke a clearer personal style again.

Improving technique isn't about polishing a specific style that you'll carry over for the rest of your life. It's about developing a skillset that will make you a more versatile artist that can draw in any style, with any perspective, in any subject matter needed. Look at the greatest renaissance painters, and even contemporary artists. They started with mastering draftsmen work, and moved on to painting. They HAAAATED drawing with charcoal, but they did it to learn, not because they intended to eschew color for all of eternity.

If you prefer the first style, work on that when you want to draw for fun, but don't forget there's fun, then there's studying. Personally, I like both styles, I don't have a preference, but just know if you ask 500 people, they're going to give you different answers as to which they prefer. Don't get hung up on THIS board's preference, everyone here is kinda... off.

I like your current work, though your old stuff has a certain charm because of how simplistic it is.
It's a lot more important that you develop solid fundamentals before you delve deep into style, which you certainly have, You can definitely start figuring out and refining your style again now.
What helps me figure out style is to make big inspiration folders of stuff I like for the aesthetics, and not for the technical skill. If you can figure out how to distinguish stuff you like for the style, and stuff you like for the skill, I think you'll have an easier time figuring out how to develop your style.

With the old you get the vibe that she's kind of a quirky misanthrope with her weird shaped head/eyes/smile and her squiggly lines enhance the character. The new version is much more sanitized and generic, and you got a lot of the details wrong. Very much soul vs soulless.

A lot of the books I started with were the ones in the mega link in the artbook thread. I don't know if this will be useful to you, but here's a little something from me:
I've moved to another job (not art, but finance-related). New colleagues, new open space.
I noticed they had some promotional Rubik cubes on the shared desks. Not plain colored ones, but with actual images on the faces. Of course, no one there was able to solve them.
I had experience solving plain, classic cubes (long road trips on the backseat at a time when smartphones weren't a thing...), so I gave them a shot. I was goof, except for the centers. You don't care for the center on plain classic ones but when they have images, the center's orientation matter.

This is the point I'm getting to: to move the center in the right position, I visualized in my head the manipulations I would have to do with the cube, something I never did before (since the solving method I developped as a kid was a long trial-and-error process and not a conscious effort to solve it in my head).

So here is what I'm trying to say: your brain and ability to imagine rely on how familiar you are with the item you're trying to imagine, and manipulating said item, physicaly interacting with it, can help tremendously. I've taken that approach for a lot of other items since, and my ability to manipulate things in my mind grew a lot.

And the cube is still sitting on my desk.

How to Draw by Scott Robertson, and that's just about it. I did a lot of bargue studies of artists I liked and life drawing and looked into graphic design fashion history and just other stuff i had a visual or emotional interest to. Also i didn't strictly follow any art rules and i was really critical of things I learned (the drapery study in era 2 was for a life drawing class and i totally took liberties with the reflected light and the shadow and stuff).

I did a lot of work from reference that wasnt a copy of the reference (era 4 portrait of the dog with jewelry was based off of a fashion photo by rina sawayama and the town from era 3 is a place in bruxelles)

I also really really like anatomy, I took a class on it in high school and even before getting into art I wanted to become a biomechanical engineer so I really liked learning about living things and how they work. And I ended up learning color stuff cause I found this one in development game that I liked the art style of and did some fan art of (its on my twitter) and it made me want to use more bright colors. Essentially my art is just a bunch of stuff i like that i ended up painting things about and then putting it together.

So i'd say dont look for books to read but things to be interested in.

Don't be afraid to share your stuff either; we all think we suck. You just have to break the ice.

Good progress on rendering and just generally using form over symbols.
However! Start using more contrast. You're using like 20% of the value scale. It's flat. But you can make it stand out if you just dare add stronger highlight together with stronger shade.
