Hey guys. I am a comp sci major with a full schedule. But I wanted to take some free online courses for my true passion: animation. I checked Edx and Coursera and they don't seem to have anything useful. I have done stop motion animation in the past using Final Cut Pro. Super ghetto, I know. I asked professors and they said Adobe After Effects, but they think Flash is absolute trash. What do you suggest? Any courses or youtube playlists you recommend? I want to make art somewhat like this:

You used slow-ins when your figure moves his legs forward and omitted frames when taking impulse, which should be the other way around.

Did some stopmotion a while ago.
Next time I'll try to avoid having any floating assets for the model (eg; the ears) because it's just too hard to keep their position consistent, either that or I could just attach them to the character rig with some green paper and then edit it out in post-production.

The timing at the start is a bit off. I agree with >>4109039 that the freeze frame doesn't help - if you want to hold on the skull, you could at least have it still moving upwards. A bucnh of little things are off here and unfortunately they add up to a jerky animation:

1. Problems with one of the ears - see pic related. In one of the frames it completely changes angle and we don't see the inner ear for a single frame, which looks very jarring in motion. Later on in the animation, the same ear seems to jump from the back of the head to just behind the fringe (and the tuft of fur appears at the base of the ear). The ear also changes position vertically a lot, seeming to dip downards in the middle of the animation.

2. The eyebrow position is inconsistent, especially towards the end of the animation, where they start to climb into the hairline.

3. I don't quite get what's happening with the tongue. Is she in the middle of licking her lips (tongue moving to our right) as the animation starts? As she jerks to the right, I'd expect the tongue to drag, but instead the tongue keeps moving right as well.

4. Her locks of hair, especially on the fringe, are changing a lot each frame.

>>4110442
This. And the rotation of the little ring holding the bell is off as well. I'd simplify that whole thing, wouldn't redraw if frame by frame since.

All of this stuff makes the animation busy and inconsistent. You're almost there, though.

you don't need to redraw every detail in every frame, you've got lines and landmarks bouncing every which way. drawing each frame can obviously be done, but pay more attention to where your lines are going as you flip through the frames. look at his crotch randomly jump around, his sleeves change size, the hand doesn't just arch before the swing, it jitters about, same with all the folds. Try to pay attention to every landmark of the drawing and how it's changing when you flip through the frames, particularly having everything follow it's own arc in a movement, and erasing and re-drawing any jitter you find that could have slipped through

The timing is a bit flat, there is no sense of speed gain and loss, once he reaches top speed he maintains it until the end. The ending is a bit off as well, his momentum just stops when he throws, you need more overshooting actions to sell the weight he is putting behind the throw. Personally I'd argue that there is a lot of unnecessary detail for so early in the project, but I suppose that comes down to preference.

>> No.4118958

A quick google search shows that main objects are usually animated between 8-12 fps while background objects are animated at 6-8. I don't watch a lot of anime, but from what I've seen they fluctuate depending on the series and situation, using a combination would probably be your best bet imo.

I'm not even much of an artist and I still have this issue, even though I know it's a waste of time, you end up getting attached to what you've made regardless of the quality of the animation and don't want to scrap it, it's something better to learn sooner than later. A bit of anticipation goes a long was as well, for this example I'd suggest having him kick his right foot forward slightly before starting the spin, this gives the viewer chance to understand the motion that is about to take place, and also just looks a lot more realistic, you don't kick from a standing motion, you swing your leg back then forwards, It's shaping up well, you just need to get used to the animation workflow is all.

Hey guys.

I'll begin working out the key frames of a new animation soon. The scene is the commissioner's character lounging around an ornate balcony inviting the viewer to join her.

However, there are still some things I need to work out such as pose and creating an effective looping animation. One idea is to have her circling a wine glass, but that doesn't fit.

What would you suggest?

looking good if a little basic. The key poses are there and the motion is clear with minimal jittering (though in the second to last frame her bust moves slightly to the right as if she's turning for a single frame which is a bit off). The frames are evenly spaced meaning the motion looks as if it maintains a constant speed for the entire duration which isn't very realistic, I'd suggest adding some ease at the start and end, or at the very least some sort of variation. I can see that it's still in the early stages so I won't say too much, but keep at it, it's looking nice.

Nah, I think the main problem is that it's a very detailed design which makes keeping track of everything hard. If you look at the eyes for instance, the irises bounce around like balls. The blink also happens too fast and late in the turn. She should be blinking just a little after the head begins to turn. It makes everything look disconnected and lacking in flow. . Having all the details doesn't help matters and distracts from the character's expression.

Not bad, but have you considered redrawing the face for each frame it moves as opposed to just taking the one frame of it and changing its position? It makes it look a little stiff, but that's just a nitpick. Still good nonetheless.

Not too bad for a first attempt, a good thing to remember when animating is a walk is to keep the feet in place. In pic related the left foot glides forwards with each frame when it should stay in place. Once the foot makes contact with the ground, keep it in the same place on screen.

Ignore that other guy.
It may be more helpful to record yourself inhaling and exhaling ( do an exaggerated pantomime). It seems you got the proper expression down. As for doing it competently, you might want to review the basic 12 principles and practice making shapes move consistently from frame to frame (I know it's a rough animation but the lines are all over the place). Tsumimasen, hope this helped goodluck.

Your overshoot of his arms are nice, though I feel like you could push his line of action more. His heads a bit disjointed and floaty. Also go to your keyframes and look at your timing without your inbetweens. It feels off. Also look at references of people actually doing that move, the way you drew it looks impossible to do without breaking your legs.
