This isn't nearly the worst sketch I've done, but it's certainly the biggest difference between sketch and finished product.

I actually have found that I can't warm up with loose methods like gesture drawing. I have to warm up to warming up by going straightaway into bland, lazy doodles, mostly devoid of underlying construction.

In my experience if you look at sketches as an exploration thing instead of step 1 of a finished piece it's much easier to select something and take it to the next step.

The anon that drew miku here:

Rough sketching, I don't know how to explain it. I close my eyes and invision the form, or I will have a bunch of references beside me. I know others dont do this, but I try to keep it as clean as possible, while including as much info so its easier to do a clean sketch afterwards. I think one thing I learned is that you gotta slow down. Speedpaints really skew the drawing process

I used to apply meticulous construction and proportion and all that to my sketches, but after a while of seeing how little effort everyone on social media put into their art I stopped giving a fuck and ironically became better (and quicker) when I just eyeballed everything and used minimal construction
TL;DR don't be autism, be free with your sketches cause no one notices or cares about your mistakes

>> No.4102105

>>4097609
serious question: if your sketch is so far away from the final product, why do you sketch?

I do not sketch all of the time, but when I do, it's to outline the flow of the spine and to lay out proportions (no. of heads, parallels, etc.)

This is an initial sketch for a piece. I liked how it came out when I was just feeling/eyeballing. It's a rare moment for me. /ic/ will probably tear it apart but whatever.

I work with vector software at my job. For personal pieces like this I sometimes use the quickshape tool in Procreate, but I try not to abuse it, cause it kinda kills that calligraphic handdrawn appeal.
