>What is /ALT/?
>If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>>Rules & Guidelines
>(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
>To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Does anything stand out as being wrong? I've been trying to understand the form of the tfl and medius as they transition into the asscheek. There are times when I think the ass should be visible but it doesn't look right, and sometimes I have trouble telling apart the ass from the illiotibial band cause I'm not sure exactly how far the latter protrudes/at what angles it should eclipse the ass.

1. The figure hovers in the air briefly before out stretching his leg. There is no anticipation or weight behind that "axe kick" because that brief hover deadens the momentum.

Watch this video on how to perform the axe kick. It will help you.

https://youtu.be/Xg9W4bIXOr0

2. Copy and pasting the same exact frame with no change to his expression, or overshoot, does not come off well with the audience. Worse, it leaves the viewer with no payoff. This kick is infamous for ripping though opponents guards like nothing when properly executed. Give this brutal technique the respect it deserves.

To be honest it feels like you didn't really put effort into anything than the girl. I feel this piece would be stronger if you just removed the rest and focused on the girl, because it doesn't really add much to the image as a whole, and it's clear you aren't as interested in doing it.
I think you should put more thought into color too, it feels like there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to the palette.

You should really push this more. You only really added detailed shading and lighting to the body (and only then to her tits and stomach, lol we can tell what you like to draw). It makes you look lazy. You go to all this effort to render her skin nicely but then look at the jewelry, especially those golf cuffs on her biceps. They're RIGHT by her face, too, so when the viewer looks at her face and goes, "Oooh" they look left and go, "Oh. They didn't finish" and it just ruins the piece.
The rule of thumb for stuff like this is, if the person is looking at the viewer, there should be a lot of detail/rendering around the face, then less and less as you move away from it. Think of it as a circle of detail.

>> No.4092914

>>4092903

You mean the figure looking sideway at the viewer? It should still apply. If the piece has its subject look at the viewer, they're actively to connect with them. The most important piece of advice I can offer about linework is this: the sketch is not the drawing, the lines are. Sketches are just for prep; the lines are where you actually start drawing. In other words, your lineart feels lifeless for the same reason that traced art feels lifeless: when you trace, the artistic part of your brain goes to sleep and leaves your hand on autopilot.

How do you combat this? A number of things: use looser sketches, reduce the opacity of your sketch layer (or lightly run an eraser over it if you're working traditionally), and overall just try not to be a slave to the sketch. Do as much as possible with the sketch layer toggled off, periodically flicking it on to reorient yourself (you can do this traditionally too by inking with a lightbox.)

One more tip: never pencil in the same color as you ink; if you're inking black, use red or blue pencils. This helps to visually differentiate the sketch from the lineart so that you won't have nasty surprises waiting for you when you erase the sketch.

First off I feel like you copied this from an already-existing Orthodox painting. Second off, #1 rule of using oil paint: WORK FROM DARK TO LIGHT. Look at how muddy everything is! Did you even wash your damn brush? It feels like you didn't. In fact it feels like you just squinted at the "reference" you used (aka whatever you were tracing) and just bullshitted in the details. Then when it came to the faces you were like, "OH YEAH! ANIME!", did some stupid ninjutsu hand gesture a la Naruto, and painted in everything without regard for building up layers, or, y'know, ANATOMY.

If you presented this to a class the teacher would probably take a knife to it, and then you.

Not scared of eyes though. (Also please don't involve kisumii, I'm not her, just made the video) That assumption is as if you think no one should draw winking characters, otherwise they're afraid of eyes lul.
The horse is the way it is so that she could be the focus in the video. I was originally planning on drawing her sitting properly on the horse, but it fills the screen better this way. The costume is the way it is because that's what makes the character recognizable.
The legs are kinda short though. Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep that in mind when drawing them in the future.

I think right now you should focus on studying form and human figure drawing more than anything else. Right now your character looks very flat, and the anatomy is rather weak. You have an understanding of what the human body looks like, but you break it into flat, 2D shapes rather than thinking about the 3D forms each body part has and how they interlock with each other, and I feel that is where your weakness comes from. I did a quick redline to show what I mean by that, sorry for the inaccuracies, I am not the best myself but I hope this helps my comments make more sense.
I'd recommend going through Hampton's figure drawing book, he breaks down the human body's forms and basic muscle groups in a really easily understandable way. I found it very helpful myself, so I feel like if you did spent some time dedicated to studying you could really level up your skills at drawing the human body and characters as well.

How do you avoid the monotony and tedium that seems to always come with doing your lines layer? I'm always eager to start sketching when I wake up, and I can always find time to practice a little painting. When it comes time to ink, I prepare to sit staring at my screen for half the day trudging toward a soulless result. The only reason I haven't dropped this shit and completely focused on painting is cause I want to at some point draw comics in the style of traditionally inked manga. This shit feels like a job, it's not fun.

If you don't want to do lines you don't have to do them. Clean up your sketch and render it, or figure out some liness style

>> No.4094998

>>4094982
It's the opposite with me. I love drawing and inking, don't care as much for the painting part. On some level I think individuals are just wired differently and you have to play to your strengths. But still, it's also a matter of approach and attitude. For me, with painting, it was about finding a more graphic hard-edged approach (with some edges blended out afterward) that FELT like drawing.
Have you tried line sculpting? It's a more painterly way of approaching linework. Also, I find inking is more enjoyable when you're not a slave to the sketch like >>4093381 said. Set stabilization relatively low, don't be perfectionist about it, let happy accident happens etc.

>> No.4095010

I am line sculpting as far as I can tell, I put some lines down and try to take a bit off their edges with an eraser when I think it's appropriate. It usually just makes them wobbly looking, but I'm weaning myself off of spamming ctrlz at least. I already typically turn stabilization off. There's just no such thing as a happy accident when I'm at the wheel, where a mistake adds charm to someone else's work, it only serves to throw off my drawing. I still don't know how people manage to ignore their mistakes, and how they determine when a mistake is worth keeping or better off being redone.

>> No.4095026

>>4095010
Line (or shape) confidence, seriously. It's in the name. Do you ever practice sketching and drawing with pencil and eraser only? Even better, with pen only and letting mistakes be? Even simple doodling can be liberating. It's letting whatever is in you in that moment fall out, without judgment.
It's tough to relinquish control, but as with anything, you get better at it with practice. It's a question of how badly you want it though. If it's a huge drag constantly then maybe learn how to work without lines. But if something feels off, only you can say, then do something about it.

I should add to this, you get more "confident" not just by scribbling nonsense, but instead by learning your subject as well as you can (paraphrasing Milt Kahl: "know your subject so well that you don't need reference"), and then by iterating on it from imagination. Want to draw arms? Study arm anatomy in detail first--what John K calls the "stiff period"; then draw what you remember, loosening it up and pushing the volumes in interesting ways ("fluid period"). And repeat, over a long period of time.
