I want to become a portrait artist that does digital portraits for $$$ and I wonder how much money should I take for it? Also I have to prepare a nice portfolio for that, though it doesn't have to be much, just one black&white and one colored portrait is sufficient I guess. The idea is that I would get a picture or pictures from a client and then I have to make a good portrait from that, simple enough.

Is it viable? Does anyone else work like this here?

Yes, that's exactly what you wonder.

Usually the starting fee is around 25 to 30$/h. It depends on your speed. I would say the 2 piece for a portfolio isn't enough tho. As for whether or not it is viable, it really depends on your popularity. Some get many commissions at once some rarely. My friends and I are taking some commission while studying and some get a good amount of money out of it. Recurring clients are where the profit is at.

i usually charge 100-200$ for a detailed digital painting, most clients looking for custom portraits have big money so don't be afraid to ask for more money.

Some constructive criticism.

The eyebrow ridge is missing.
The nose is wrong, there would be more protrusion and volume to it and you wouldn't see the left nostril as much from that perspective
Underside of the chin is non-existent.
