I've got a lot of questions regarding being a comic artist but here's one:

Setting.
I'm writing a post-apocalyptic comic.
I was thinking of either it will be set in japan or any developed countries.
A catastrophic world set in my third world country would be lame as fuck.
What should I do ? I don't have any idea about foreign countries but through copying manga/anime I might have a chance.

How does one format their webcomic for webtoon? I've heard of people making the comics normally then splicing them together while I heard of others just using one big canvas.
Unrelated, but why does webtoon only take jpg? (An image must be less than 800px wide and 1280px long, JPG format,
and up to 2MB in file size. The suggested DPI is 72 or more. The batch of images can be up to 20MB). I heard because it loads slow on phones, but even with the limitations it's still slow?

It's way too low key, you have this problem in general with your comic. I get that you're trying to show it's night but you can achieve this without going so dark. Just use a bluish tint and try to define silhouettes with moonlight, your characters don't read well and your placement of blacks makes little sense. If it's possible, try to have characters interact near a light source. Your lettering is bumping against the edges of the balloons, you should adjust the width and height with the object tool to make the lettering fit properly. I think your comic would benefit from hand-drawn balloons on top of hand-drawn lettering.

From what I hear, people who want to print someday or prefer normally formatted webcomics draw pages first, then chop them up. Otherwise you can just draw the pages in scrolling format from the start. Additionally, while page-by-page formatted comics are less favored on webtoons, you can defintely just post traditionally formatted comics there as well.
Webtoons uses JPG because it's mainly a phone based site and they want the images to be as teeny as possible. Maybe it's just your phone, WT usually loads fine for me?

Best thing to do if you want to write about a subject you don't know about, is to do as much research on that subject as you can. The more believable the better. If you want your story to take place in a certain country other than your own, research the:
>locations
>the society
>a bit of the history
>dialect
>fashion, food, people etc.
I know it sounds like a lot of work, but if you want your comic to stand out, you must put in that extra effort. Also, it wouldn't help to read other creator's work of that genre. It will help with developing ideas and concepts, and also it can help avoid writing a story plot that's already been done before.

With that, you can start to create ideas. Y'know, problems faced - how they're solved; day to day life; how humanity currently is (what remains of it) - full on dog eat dog or are there at least communes etc? To me the pacing seems very wrong. It feels like I'm reading these disconnected words and sentaces without understanding anything thats happening. Having all the panels in so small makes it feel weird and doesn't tell you where to focus and what is the importance of this scene.

Take mignolas comics as an example, you can tell whats happening in this scene just from this one panel and its easy to read. You need to work on panel sizing and composition, if you haven't read framed ink yet I highly suggest you do.

1: Shot from the side "stay back" goat and attacker, pig and the other guy in background
2: "Be silent" more or less as it is.
3: Pig "This is wrong" from the side/back with a view on the first attacker loading the goat on the shoulder.
4: Claiming of the pig and exaggerate perspective with the pig face squashed by the boot and a dark shape of the guy with a toothy smile. You can probably make the guy fully black with just white for the teeth.

I want to make a comic sometime but I'm worried that there's basically zero interest in webcomics aside from niche shit and porn. Then again, most of the webcomics I've seen range from mediocre to downright bad. Are my fears justified or am I just not looking in the right places or something?

Yeah I feel the same. I've been thinking about just pitching to a smaller publisher instead. Webcomics seem like a gamble, if you make your own site you need to have a pre-established audience, if you post on webtoon, you have to appeal to a certain demographic (anime style, romance, etc) and can't really do your own thing. You also have to be really lucky just to pick up some steam. I personally feel like the best route would still be to make the best work you possibly can, find a smaller publisher that puts out similar stuff and hope they like your work. If that fails then you have the webcomic route to fall back on although it's fairly risky.

There are probably some good tools out there for this, would be pretty cool: connecting parts of the text with hyperlinks, keeping separate tabs for different information, having collapsible parts so you can write in a nested form...

I generally draw mindmaps on a paper before typing shit out because I lack this flexibility with software. Paper is not even that good, but it's a bit better for a rough brainstorm.

A shitton of nip readers. Most of the popular manga people scanlate isn’t even from big mags like Jump or it’s variants.
Manga, unlike anime which has the nerd reputation, is a ton more mainstream than western comics.

Understanding of the medium, Framed Ink is a great book for ideas on composition I just think its very single minded with a focus on "cool" shots over substance and the bigger picture. If you're reading something for comics then it benefits you to consider paneling, pacing, the frame itself (nearlly everything in framed ink is the same filmic layout). People often talk of how well made the manga Witchhat Atelier is and Will Eisner covers a lot of those concepts in his book. He also educates about comics while using comics.
>>4049524
It's a great book for illustration and storyboarding for modern blockbuster type films, not so much for comics. There are takeaways and considerations I just don't think its as good or practical as will eisners books. Assuming people even read even a quarter of either.

After ruminating on that for an evening( generally under some illicit influence) I have a vague idea of a scene or arc. From there on its sanding the edges until I have something to commit to the page. Could take an hour, could take a week or six months. Get enough of them, you might even end up with your own universe.

i wanna commit to making one comic

>> No.4052635

Would you guys read a comic book about a completely magicless lad in a world where literally everyone else is a wizard/have superpowers?

In a magical accident our MC, an average but bright guy, gets summoned into a fantasy world. Because he has no magic whatsoever he's treated like a retarded, disabled person. MC, bitter because of how he is treated, decides to use his analytical mind to learn how to harness magic for himself - each issue would be about a single experiment, usually ending in a failure. It's a slippery slope - each experiment is slightly more controversial than a previous one. Eventually MC's obsession with magic pushes him to experiment with illegal dark, bloody rituals; our hero slowly turns into an edgy anti-hero that's hunted by magical police.

While this comic would mostly focus on action and adventure I also want it to force readers to think about things like "where does talent come from?", "is being talented necessary to be happy?", "should I give up on my dreams just because I don't think I'm talented enough to reach them?" and so on.

What do you guys think?

>Isekai
The premise isn't too my taste, but I'm sure there's a market for it.
It's good you have a basic story arc planned out, but you need to flash it out more and think more about how it would work mechanically, and if you feel like you could confidently create/execute it.
>each issue would be about a single experiment, usually ending in a failure. It's a slippery slope - each experiment is slightly more controversial than a previous one.
This is something that might work in something like a serialized manga, but you should consider a few factors
>1. Would you be able to write episodic adventures that are consistently engaging? Try writing out some detailed outlines for chapters like this too see how comfortable you are with the format
>2. Would you enjoy drawing episodic adventures? It's clear you have this grand conclusion you want to get to in the story, so because episodic adventures only move the plot forward bit by bit you may get quickly bored of them and become unhappy working on the comic, as you're taking too long to get to what you really want to make
In general I'd recommend trimming down your story ideas to be shorter rather than longer, and make sure each chapter is significant and necessary. Maybe instead of having many chapters of experiments, you could boil it down to the one experiment that causes him to change. It's usually good to focus on "turning points" when you think about your story, as those are usually going to be the parts most engaging to your audience.

honestly i would change the premise to be MC was born in that world as a no superpowers boy, like argus filch from harry potter or the main guy from sky high. since if he's summoned the readers will focus on: why was he summoned, how will he get back, is he stealing something he feels entitled to from a world he's not actually part of etc. i'm sure you could do it your way too, but if you're not doing anything with the other world aspect i'd reconsider it

Wasn't impressed by part 1 but I went smoothly through it which is already a lot for me. Then part 2 was surprisingly enjoyable and funny, I really loved it. The art is charming in its own way and you draw funny expressions.

If you tone down things a notch for TV, part 2 would be a great pilot for a cartoon, you should pitch it to studios, I swear. BUT you have to iron it out a bit, fix the grammar errors like you're/your, and learn to use color a little bit so it doesn't turn out like an eyesore. This could be a diamond in the rough, the main characters are funny and you got a knack for it.
Keep working at it and learn some comic paneling / lettering by observing artists you like so you end up with something a bit more polished but DON'T lose that look you have right now, ignore the people ITT who will inevitably tell you it's shit. Once you have enough good material consider a pitch.

Usually yes, but there are many traditional artists right now that draw individual panels and patch them together digitally. It's a good method if you're doing things homemade on a small scanner, but you have to pay attention to the size you're working with, if you shrink a drawing as you please instead of matching the DPI you're using you end up with different line weights and it's very offputting.

American comics usually are drawn on 11'x17' bristol boards, Strathmore Bristol 300 series, usually.
The template is pretty standard right now, search it on google.

Now you can draw single panels on smaller sheets of paper, because you can use digital to put the pieces together, the problem is the if you want to sell originals, a single page is better.

I get what you're doing, but the art is sloppy. I understand the stylistic intent, but there are things like hatching done at the same size instead of tapering lines, lots of unnecessary scribbling, sloppy blacks, etc.
You seems to spend too little time on the pages. Try to make something a bit more refined even if you want to keep it rough looking and loose.
Second, there's bad use of values, you have panels like pic related where it's just lineart and other things scribbled in, this creates patchy blacks that make the panel unpleasant to look at. The sky is darker than the car, but the car isn't white?, the light poles in the background are completely black when they should be lighter (background elements go higher in value)
Try to make your panels more focused, imagine there's a spotlight on the most important thing going on in the panel. If the zombie with the shotgun is the most important thing, put the spotlight on that.
What would your ideal version of this comic look like?
The writing is OK, I like that you show things instead of explaining everything. I'd cut a bit of the first few pages since I generally find these paragraphs boring and I'd rather have things start
directly with the comic, but that's up to you.

I need some advice on comics. I've wanted to make a comic for so long but no matter how I try to I can't do it, lots of comic artists have probably felt this but its so overpowering I'm not sure what to do. Its everything to do with comics that I feel unable to do, from panel composition to text placement. I've tried and experimented but it never feels right, how can I overcome this feeling? I know the right answer is to just start my comic and keep doing it but I just feel like I can't.

I think it helps a lot to just jump in with a practice comic. What I mean by that is don't even bother agonizing over a script, just jump in with some sort of story idea and start putting out pages. Will it be good? Probably not, but just getting yourself acclimated to trying to make pages and feeling out what works and what doesn't is a really great experience if you're having trouble making the initial jump.
I was in the same position as you ~3 years ago, and so I just started making a comic with only a vague outline. I made about 100 pages, and it ran for like a year before I gave up, and it was frankly a mess, but it was a great experience because just jumping in and feeling things out as I went taught me a ton, got me comfortable with the medium, and paved the way for me to make better comics in the future.

Usually for an american publisher you just need the synopsis and 12 finished pages.

You may need more or less depending on the publisher.

Check this:

But keep in mind: you can self publish your stuff right now and if the comic is good you can still sell it later to a publisher.

Probably if you're not experienced is better to put stuff on social media a try crowdfunding first.
I say "probably" because I'm italian and for your first graphic novel here even "big" publishers offers you almost nothing, so starting with them doesn't make a lot of sense anymore.

ah, that's true

my stuff probably isn't very social media friendly. not a lot of waifus, just quiet drama stuff

I’ve been brainstorming a story about the “last T. rex,” who somehow survived the asteroid, and is now left to explore the dying land with her daughter. The dinosaurs died in about two hours after impact so it would feature a lot of violent, surreal death. Basically it’s about how a dominant species is still at the mercy of nature and how easily it can be flung into extinction.

I’m not sure if the dinosaurs should talk. They are a more advanced society, so it would help to explain lore and make parallels with humanity - and connect with a broader audience. But then given the serious subject matter and the realism I’m going for, I’m just not sure if talking would hurt or help the story more.

Italian here
In my opinion it doesn't make sense to try to publish in Italy and in Italian, better to try in English to have more audience with kickstart or other like you said.

You probably do even more than the 0.50 / 1 euro you would have for copy sold in Italy.

What made you get to this conclusion? Have you tried attending cons? have you tried France/French?
Fellow Italian here, I came to the very opposite conclusion after trying webcomics/social media for so long and I want to drop the internet to attempt traditional publishing. I know it's gonna be hard and traditional publishing is extremely night but I think what you can do on the internet is limited to a few genres.
I see a lot of BD and Italian artists with no social media presence at all but they're well known and they get published.

what numbers did you reach on the web?
I also have a webcomics in English and probably has reached many more readers/followers than traditional publishing in Italy.

I made the conclusion from many experiences of other artists I know, and simple calculations, it is not even a question of being published but of how much you earn.

You have 3 typical cases
- a small / unknown publisher who cheats you and you will never get paid or cents.
- famous / known publisher who publishes you but for a very small gain 0.50 / 1 euro per copy sold and the print runs are around 1000/2000 copies so make the calculation of the profit.
- Do you join a Top, Bonelli? but to get in I know from many that the recommendation is needed.

And in all these cases you lose the rights of your work, you give them to the publisher.

With self-publishing / kickstarter other
The rights are yours, and if it goes wrong you most likely have earned the same money as the first and second case.

I thought about that too. I'll have to play around a bit to see what feels right, because I don't want to spoonfeed my audience or treat them like they can't figure it out. It might take away the meaning idk. Maybe I'm overthinking their reactions.

>> No.4066111

>>4066102
It's not about spoonfeeding your audience or not. It's more on your ability to tell (and show) what you want in a understandable way. If you are not able without spoonfeeding then spoonfeed.

Is webtoon any good to get hooked up with? Looks simpler than trying to pull stunts with manga, but I hear you get paid based on chapter likes which sounds strange. I mean sure, manga probably doesn't make much more, but the strike rate with manga seems tough as hell.

I wish I could make a webcomic drawn really sketchy like this but I don't think it would fly next to inked/colored stuff on a site like tapas. I remember back in the early 2000s a lot of webcomics were drawn like this.
I had a similar idea with another simple style but I'm not sure.

Do you guys use premade fonts or do you write the text yourself? I think certain popular fonts can't be used for commercial publishing. I'm thinking about handwriting the text, but I don't know if it's gonna take too much work.

Also, another thing: manga scanlators usually have lots of "widows" and "orphans" since japanese balloons are rounder and sometimes vertical. Would it be alright if I did the same? It's how I'm used to read comics, horizontal balloons with straight text just feel weird to me.
