A lot of people here and on youtube cry about not getting better at art. Everyone so obsessed with looking for tutorials and shortcuts. Why aren't more people grinding at art like Dave Rapoza or Alpenburger did? In 2-4 years these guys went from /beg/-tier to well paid pro artists with lots of commissions.

>>4041371
Because people is lazy, also most of begs hoard tutoriales to deal with the anxiety of drawing, like just watch the stuff and never draws.

i'd say look it up but pretty much all of Rapoza's early stuff has disappered from the internet. Alpenburger posted his old work on deviant art though. he did reach entry-level pro tier within 3 years.

People lie on the internet. And with how the internet was slow as shit back then I wouldn't be surprised half of those so called prodigies lied about their progress.

Is that the excuse you make for why you're not better at art yet?

You can make an incredible amount of progress in just a few years.... IF:

You are structured, consistent, know what to study and how to practice, and do a fuck-ton of drawing and painting. Basicly you have to force yourself to do the work and learn as if you're going to school for it.

It's tough b/c you have to compete with senior artists right out of the gate.

However most junior gigs are actually highly drawing focused with very minimal painting according to James Paick, so if that's any comfort.
If you draw well, (meaning confidently and consistently getting people excited thru the drawings you make) you will find work.

we live in an age of convenience
most people bought up had to put very little work into what they wanted
the internet, video games, mass media, movies, music etc all flood peoples lives, displaying plenty of finished products but detailing zero of the work put in
there is no patience in general, any more. most people want a quick solution because that is all they know. they're tainted by the internet, and unable to be away from it for any length of time.
who knows what this means in the grander scope of things

Hasn't this been the case for more well over a decade already? The only guys who didn't have to do this were the ones who graduated in the 90s/early 2000s like Feng Zhu or Jaime Jones and got in easy because concept art was still new. It's never going to go back to those days.

What makes you think peopleare not practicing?

The ones you see complaining are the ones NOT practicing; the huge tip of a rather shallow iceberg.

>> No.4042720

They're crying about not getting better because there's no easy or methodical way to improve. You're crawling in the dark hoping others can help you figure out what's right. And most "artists" are lying to you trying to sabotage you by usually omitting important details. 4chan tends to be a lot more honest and transparent about things. Professionals are much more cooperative and positive seeing it less as a competiong. In between those is toxic cut throat people who are trying to harm you by praising your work or telling you lies.

I spent almost 8 years drawing everything I could and I'm still worse than some teenagers.
Honestly, there's a talent factor. Some people just learn faster and better.

If you grind out 5 hours of Loomis studies every day for a year I don't see why a person wouldn't be able to draw a figure from imagination

we should ignore them then. report all threads of people saying such things. only respond to the ones that post their own art and efforts. to do otherwise is wasting everyone's time.

its not that, its a matter of the same old 'i havent drawn for months and wont post my work, tell me how to get better' posts.
they should at the very least be posting their own efforts so there is 1) a sense that we are contributing to someone that will listen to us, 2) a starting point for advice to give.

Everything is so saturated now that your presence and all that other marketing and self promotion shit is more important than ever. would Appleflinger have made it today, in a world after forums and drowning in Fake It Till I Make It, support my titty drawing on patreon, low effort high shill posts?
I honestly don't know.

It's like how people used to think Marko was a genius since he didn't need ref for people, he just learned anatomy as a kid. Then KJG comes along and blows him out the water.

I want to get better. That means learning new things and applying them. I won't understand how to do shadows just by drawing. I need to learn that, from someone who understands them.

It's the result of a strong art community. Feng Zhu says having friendly competition will help you improve a lot faster and there's the proof. Not only did those guys have the chance to interact with pros but they got to see pro sketchbooks and pushed themselves hard to get on the same level. A place like this doesn't exist anymore and probably never will thanks to Gumroad and Patreon.

The difference between here and there is that few people were obsessed with anime, and you could get people who knew what they were talking about to critique your art.

>you could get people who knew what they were talking about to critique your art.

that still happens, though I've mainly seen it on discord communities.

what seems to have changed is that there's far fewer people who tryhard. CA had a bunch of people who would practice constantly, all day&every day.

I'm surprised those kind of people seem to have vanished, or maybe they just aren't into sharing their journey? with how popular streaming has become, you'd think there would be plenty of people drawing 10h/day and building up a community like rapoza did.

It's all about money now. Who has time for all that? What's the point of grinding loomis or bridgman studies for a few years when you can copy the style of a popular instagram artist and gain a large following in half the time? Then after you reach 5k or 10k followers you can shill your patreon and start selling stickers on etsy.
