>be rather skilled artist
>self promote a bit
>post on boards stating you're open for gigs
>shill self for a few days

...

>offers and requests come in
>people want free work
>people have me read through gigantic walls of text only to bail on me once I give a quote
>everytime I post a quote or bring up payment I get no reply
>offers and requests keep rolling in
>can't be bothered to even reply to them because I'm jaded by the last 20 times I did

Do people really expect me to do a days worth of work for $20 or something? How can there be such a fundamental disconnect between worth and value in these peoples heads? I draw furry porn pics that take me 2-3 hours for $250. But when I want to do respectable serious honest quality art suddenly I am expected to lower myself to McDonalds burgerflipper levels of profit... how is this possible?

I don't understand this shit anymore. How do I skip the garbage peasant indie developers and start getting noticed and hired by studios willing to pay a professional a reasonable amount for his work?

Sort of relevant question: how the fuck do you deal with people who want to chitchat via PM or in Discord servers without being a dick?
It goes like
>Hey I love your work!
>Thanks!
>I make art too, blah blah blah
>That's nice
>I made this OC blah blah blah, here's a pic
>I like it
>He's called blah blah blah and blah blah blah
I don't want to be rude but at some point I stop replying or find an obvious excuse to stop chatting. Most of these guys are nice and they follow me but they start talking like they want to make friends and I don't want to talk with anyone.

send emails to businesses, not people. dont just make a reddit thread or some fucking shit.
it's easier to get 1 500$ job from a company making whatever they're making than to get 10 individuals to pay you $50
companies and business are far more likely to seek you out again if they like your work
your ethic also helps you in regards to this

yeah I don't deal with that stuff at all anymore. Anyone who wants to 'chat' on discord is an instant red flag to me.

why even use discord if you don’t want to talk to people?

anon the art market is way oversaturated, this isn't DA days of 15 years ago. Unironically there are much better artists than you who charge a sliver of your price.

>> No.4034355

Oversaturated with mediocre artists, yeah. Competition is fierce even for very skilled artists. Just find your niche, and do everything your competition is not doing and you will make it

Adding onto this, skill is only part of the equation in how successful you will be. You also have to learn the best strategies to market yourself and get your artwork sold. There are intermediate level artists who making art is their full time job just because they built a fan base around their artwork and know how to sell their work.

You're targeting the completely wrong market.
To be able to work successfully for the big studios, it's important that you

- can demonstrate that you can deliver professional work quickly
- can show your work process, and that it's dependable and result-oriented
- can follow directions, and are willing to change things
- change your art style when needed (until you become good enough to have your own
recognizable style, so that studios ask for you specifically)
- are able to produce art assets that comply with certain requirements
- are excellent at visual communication, and understand the requirements of the art you produce

- and finally, ask for a good price, and do not undercut yourself. If you establish a suitable hourly rate,
do not drop it if the studio tries to haggle.

Bumping this thread because I fell for the art school meme. I have a degree and can draw naked girls but nobody actually teaches you how to find work after school. Are there job boards I should be using or just making a mental note if businesses I think my style fits and contact them directly?

It's just NOT the way to go especially if you're just decent and not the absolute best in the industry.

Because people outside fandoms don't think art is a real job.

Welcome to business you fucking retard.

You're not an artist, you're a sole trader with a product. Customers are garbage and they will make everything that used to be joyous and amazing into garbage as well. Nobody should ever aspire to make a living off their art.

Cut your hair and get a real job.

absolutely. you have to be a special kind of creep to send people PM's in discord
not that it's extraordinary but people usually don't do that for some reason and those who do are usually creeps from what I've gathered so far

I have been through this bullshit so much and I hate it.
The best thing you can do is just to deal with it for the time being and eventually you will get clients and clients who come BACK so they already know your rate
Also I usually am just upfront and ask about budgets before we get into walls of texts

Being concise: put a price tag on some example drawings.

This will give the person a vague notion of how much they'll have to pay you, so cheapskates will stay away and people who want 1902312903 characters on an epic warzone will be more modest and just ask for two characters having tea.

Aka pander in every possible way. I've never seen one of these marketing geniuses make anything original.
