I've noticed alot of modern attempts at making old style anime get the colours wrong, they look too digital, a colour you wouldn't see on a vhs

>> No.4033508

I think the best way to achieve the results is to emulate the process and materials.

Anime is produced by laying cells on top of each other. These clear acetate sheets are *not* perfectly transparent. Each layer will slightly diffuse and refract the light... making the layers underneath it appear less brilliant and more fuzzy the further back you go. Sometimes they can be slightly scratched, or dirty, or dusty, which adds to the feeling.

Instead of drawing each layer on "real" computer digital transparency, use a scan of an acetate sheet instead. Each sheet will have its own imperfections that layer on top of each other, so be sure to have a few different images that you can swap in/out of each other.

Coloring was done by painting the backs of cell. So be sure to set each layer up like this:

L1: line art on real transparent background
L2: scanned image of an acetate animation cell
L3: colors
L4: line art of the 2nd cell layer
L5: scanned image of an acetate animation cell
L6: colors
... etc

After this, you'll want to do some additional post processing.

The cells aren't the final output, the final output is the camera negative from photographing the cells. There are 2 different master formats used in anime - film and video.

For film (anything high budget or pre-80s), you'll have to look online for this, there's lots of stuff out there about techniques to emulate analog film grain, exposure settings, film stocks, etc. You might need to export in a "raw" format and use something like lightroom to "develop" your film against different stocks.

For video (lower budget, aimed at ova or tv release, post 1980s), look up the NTSC-J video format, the format that Japan used at the time. You'll find all the different settings for chrom subsampling, colorspace, blacklevel, resolution, etc. And your goal will be to make turn your output "cell" into a valid ntsc-j video frame. Again look online for this, there may be some plugins that can help you.

So you suggest to make the layers a certain % "milky" of sorts? Stacking the different cells is a pretty decent idea actually.

Just a bit confused with what you meant by
>L4: line art of the 2nd cell layer
>L5: scanned image of an acetate animation cell
>L6: colors
since wouldn't you usually just stick to one layer of lineart and color, assuming you've already laid it all down in one layer each. All in all really good read

No, each frame in the final product is made out of multiple animation cels layered on top of each other. So you's want to emulate that effect by laying multiple line art/scanned cel background/color on top of each other.

The further back layers (esp ackground) will get more dull and blurred than the cels on the top (facial expressions, mouths, etc), so you get a natural kind of atmospheric perspective & detail sharpening from the effect of multiple stacked cels.

Look at pic related.

You guys focus way too much on the superficial shit. Nobody cares about just how perfect you emulate the noise filter and the slightly blurred, washed out look of an 80s tv anime if the drawing itself doesn't look good. Likewise, those 80s anime would still look great without the noise and blur.

Also if you are asking about the line art/color sand which...

Animators paint the color in the back of the cel. So if you are looking at it front on, the line work is on top of the cel, then you have the cel medium, then the colors are behind the cel (in the back of it). So that's why you'd set up each individual cel layer like that

Surprised, posted this in the anime general. Looking for info on achieving 80's/90's compositing? Namely in style of Akira or Sailor Moon. I feel like I've read every available tutorial online. I am being commissioned and while I have a decent grasp I'm wondering if anyone knows how to do pic related in quality. I have an example on the left, trying to pull off right. Mine keeps looking like it's on screen while the works on the right look like they were scanned through a magazine or something. Any ideas /ic/? I feel like I'm real close.

According to wikipedia, VHS has a luma resolution of 336x480 and a chroma resolution of 40x480.

So first I added the background, and cropped to 4:3 aspect ratio.

Then I decomposed the image into 3 channels using the rec704 colorspace: luma, red chroma and blue chroma.

Then I resized luma to 336x480, and each chroma channel to 40x480.

Then I recompose the channels again using the rec 704 colorspace. To get this to work, I had to make all the channels the same size, so I had to rescale the 40x480 channels to be 336x480. This is OK, because the effect is the same, even when upscaled the chroma will be lower resolution than the luma.

After that I rescaled the image from 336x480 to 640x480.

Then I did a gaussian blur of 0.7 pixel radius.

Then desaturation @ 75%

Then boosted the green channel.

Finally, I used levels and changed the output to be 16 - 235 instead of 0 - 255, since TV signals are clamped at those values, and don't use the full range like PC monitors do.

Attached is one where I didn't do any desaturation at all.

Key aspects (IMO):
- horizontal ppi is less than vertical ppi (the 336x480 scaled to 640x480)
- chroma resolution is less than luma resolution (40x480 vs 336x480)
- chroma resolution is very low, vhs had bad color
- output is in limited yuv range 16-235 instead of 0-255

Also I think part of your problem was the noise. Noise means details, and a sharp image. But NTSC VHS didn't really have a sharp image, it has a very soft, blurry image. Noise makes it look more like a higher definition, a high resolution film scan or something, not a VHS or 90s TV screencap.

Original anon. I have a similar technique.

Your first step is similar to chromatic aberration. Copy paste, go into the RGB channels and typically transform red/cyan layer using x and y measures by about 1%. I usually do this after the texture effects though. I do noise, grain, and also I clip mask a "Color" or "Hue" layer copy and blur that a little.

I also typically use gaussian blur too. I'm wondering if a different blur like box or lens would help. I've tried different combos of blurring over sharpened layers and vice versa. The glow is good, but overdoing it results in the "on screen" lighting effect more than what I was originally going for, which has more of a matte finish and blends well into eachother.

I don't know about chromatic aberration, I think people do it way too much. They make it look like an old 3d movie if you watch it w/out our red and blue glasses on. I don't think I've ever seen a VHS tape that actually looks like what people call chromatic aberration. I think it's much more likely for the picture to be really washed out w/out a lot of color in it at all. Oh and overly bright w/out a lot of contrast.

But again, aesthetics-wise I'm not sure if people are actually talking about a VHS style look as the "retro anime aesthetic".

Just in this thread alone I've seen different looks like the VHS/analog TV look, remastered bluray of a film print, windows era CGs (and of course the pc98 CGs have their own huge cult following).

>>4035555
Checked, and I can see that. That's why I prefer washing out using the Color/Hue layer. I only use red/blue aberration to get a little color variation in the line work. If pics were taken with a camera, there'd have to be a minor motion blur applied too since they're capturing stills of motion + recording equipment imperfections. People do get too cliche, it's more about the subtle flaws. People were trying to preserve quality back then.

It depends on the environment and the effect you're going for, but for later retro anime they would do compositing and blur to smoothen out sharp lines. Top left copy line art, top right copy whole image and layer them. Use a color map or mask to color the copies like yellow or greenish grey (the blacks are washed out into a yellow-green or off brown hue which gives you a hint.) The right has a lot of other things going on though like luminosity and vibrancy differences, which you'd probably want to color select and blur at different ratios and set the layers too something like Overlay or Soft Light if you're using PS. For the bottom left, I'd say copy line art, put a mask over the copy to turn it a deep dull red/orange, and blur that. That gives it warmth. The Gundam one hardly has glow added. You could probably just get away with copy image and blurring that top layer.

All of them are drastically different but if you get a grip on understanding the effects, it gets much easier to break them down. Zoom in close to the lines and see how they look. Some produce a very low opacity black/grey like fuzz, some come off as dark shades of the color near the line. Also be subtle about it.

Mine is on left drawn from scratch. Not much effects besides blurs and noise/grain. There are some variants in color compared to the original due to them using paint, but that could be replicated with enough time.

>> No.4039647

>>4039622
Obviously unless you're willing to spend several hours on one drawing, you won't be able to replicate it 100%. You just need to sell the impression enough. All the anime in the 80's/90's have similar qualities but appear drastically different by means of output and how they've been preserved.

Sonoda's artbooks, Shirow's, and a lot of /m/ ones (Macross and Gundam in particular) can be found on Archive Scans.
If you can find them, the Viper game artbooks (Sogna was the dev, some of the artbooks hold that name) are also pretty good.

Two years ago a guy I talked to on a forum offered me a gig and asked for a portfolio piece to see what I could offer in the way of cool girl drawings.

I stayed up all night working on a commando girl. After laying in the basic figure I started getting reference for gear. Working from photographs I drew her boots and worked up from her feet.

Once I hit the torso problems started. I decided to go for an old school anime girl in the vein of Toriyama, but I didn't really know what I was doing. By the time I got to the head I was fucked. I had a huge existential panic attack, contacted the guy, told him I wasn't interested, then entered a suicidal funk for nine months where I swore off drawing and wanted to die. That was the last time I tried to make it. I only got my head together after giving up the ghost and getting a job in a warehouse.

In hindsight I think it looks OK from the waist down.

The WORST examples of retro anime I've seen in a long time. These two clowns offer up the perfect examples of what NOT to do when it comes to learning, much less drawing in the old "vintage" anime style, which is HIGHLY overrated now for its nostalgia factor. You're much better off learning from videos like Manben, who are actual professional manga artists that have mastered their skills, through both traditional and digital mediums.

Taking any advice from these two, much less referencing their techniques, is a recipe for failure.

What an uncomfortable pose. I hate the loomis meme (even though I'm also working on it myself) but you do need to work on anatomy for sure since her head and shoulders look squished and her neck is too thick as well, especially for old anime. Not to mention how it comes apart even more around her pelvis. It looks like you colored with crayon which even more ruins the aesthetic of old anime while I'd recommend at least using markers if anything, it would have looked a lot better if you made all your coloring marks in the same direction for the first layer and then the opposite direction for the next as that would have looked a look smoother and well blended; coloring in small circles might also produce the same effect too. For actual color choices, while the blue you chose is alright everything else is too muddy, especially the skin and the hair. Both need to be brighter and more saturated. I would have used a nice light and peachy color for the skin and for the hair I would have layered the whole thing with either a light yellow or a red-orange-ish color before going back over with the actual hair color you wanted it to be. The shorts can also just be completely black too. Also don't be afraid to use colored shadows and not just black in the picture too, since lots of old animes also use both. I quickly drew and colored a guide just in case that might have helped more, though it's not fully finished (sorry it's probably also beg tier). Hopefully this wasn't a troll post but if you were serious I hoped this might have helped you.
