I want to start animating with just trad paper and pencil. What do I need? A peg bar and animation paper?

Get a notepad and make flipbook animations.

damn do you really need a lightbox, can't you just use the semi transparent paper animators use?

Also, does anybody know what kind of paper they use? I'd rather just hole punch the paper myself instead of buying super expensive hole punched animator paper

dude, animation is hard ad fuck, if you guys here can barely manage the fundamentals on a single drawing you are not freaking ready for animation, even less for animation on traditional media, stop being so delirant.

Don't be a little bitch:

Also, get one of these peg bars so you can use a standard hole-punch. That way you can just use regular printer paper.

>Standard binder 3-hole punch. Specialized acme paper is a scam and the punchers are $300-$600+
>cheap light box
>pencil
>TVpaint (optional, demo is fine) so you can easily see your scanned frames in motion. It even has a pegbar line-up feature so the animation doesn't shake.

The paper isn't transparent enough to actually see through while they sit on top a desk. You're gonna need a lightbox if you want to get into traditional animation. Canson sells animation paper for cheap and you could find a Huion lightbox for about $50 or so.
Alternatively, you could use an old LCD monitor with a plate of glass on top. When I started doing traditional animation, I actually just used my phone screen for a partial onion skin. Other times I used my Cintiq screen, but a lightbox is so much easier.
