ITT: we discuss and exhibit outsider art and artists.

Here's a definition: art produced by self-taught artists who are not part of the artistic establishment.

I love outsider art, OP.
I'd rather see some technically bad outsider art than more directionless studies or pretty anime drawing.

Its great, outsider artists are what normalfag artists strive to be. They are just pretending to be crazy.

What does outsider art even mean in the age of the internet? Are Disney and Dreamworks outsider art? Is Sakimichan outsider art because she's self-employed and doesn't show in galleries? Is someone with 10 Instagram followers outsider art? How many followers would they need to no longer be an outsider?

>What does outsider art even mean in the age of the internet?
All of you shut ins on the internet that aren't drinking champagne at the show openings in Soho, basically. More than that, it's a hermetically sealed artist that doesn't slot into a course book on art history. Like Jesus.

it's an outdated term. applied when people thought art history was going to continue developing movements. thus people outside those movements were called outsiders. except history is dead with instant gratification culture. only memes now and kids making bastard anime or spaceship brownshooters on deviantart.

There was a really good one and it's going to take me ages to find them (and you'll b****** so you can do it yourself) but the biography was like " they're really not nice, you wouldn't want to know them" they were locked up for life for being too weird. But you can still buy their art!

Austin Spare, yes he is associated with black magic and the occult. He would go into trances and felt that he communicated with other worlds and beings. It was a popular pass time in early 1900's London, there's the Theosophical Society, Swami Prabhavananda, it was like The Beatles I suppose. I've handled some of his art and his prices are moderate (there's a lot of it, he isn't in demand ). He does have that whole spooky vibe which is like catnip. Similar almost to Aubrey Beardsley. Decadent. Symbolist as well. There's not much of it about these days.

I guess the question is, "What's the difference between folk art and outsider art?"

I personally prefer folk art, since, even though it lacks the technical polish and sophistication of academic art, it has it's own history and traditions of design, color and motif, and usually feels a bit more refined than "outsider" art.

I guess so? Wait, does graffiti count as folk art? Some of that can be pretty refined, even beautiful, though most of it is ugly crap that ruins our cities...

Basquiat definitely feels like he qualifies, though I always picture outsider art as coming from the boondocks. Like some old man in rural Louisiana painting for no one but himself, using housepaint or whatever he had lying around.
