you should be able to see the tops of all the cabinets as the view is set from above, and with a fisheye lens (this is an emulation of a slight fisheye) they should curve slightly wider, and you should see slightly more of the top, the closer the object gets to the edges of the screen. They went for that kind of shot but made the tops not visible (what you would do if you had the camera/point of view set low, rather than high) and also they made certain objects get wider towards the top (correct) and certain get thinner towards the top (wrong in this scenario).

Basically they attempted a distortion that if done right, looks amazing, but they did certain parts wrong and some parts almost right. To someone who doesn't know this, they might miss it but have an odd sense that something is off.

The perspective is technically mathematically correct, but it's distorted to the point it looks unnatural. It doesn't really properly simulate how our eyes naturally see the world, hence it looks jarring.
You can see this a lot in comic books where an artist just slap on a traced 3d background without really knowing how to draw or compose them properly. The results will be technically perfect, but there'll always be something off about them.

It is though. You can probably redline each and every single line and it'd produce a perfect perspective grid. The background is most likely bashed from a photograph or 3d model.

The only way for there to be technical mistakes is that if the artist hand-drew all of this from a scratch, but there's literally no reason to do that for this type of soulless generic grunt work and you can tell just by looking at the final result.

Suppose you had to photograph this same scene, capturing every object in the screenshot in your photo. There are two ways to do it.

1. You can physically back up far enough to get everything in the frame.
2. You can stand closer and just use a shorter focal length (shorter focal length = wider shot).

Now if you imagine the anime screenshot IS a photograph, the photographer chose option 2. It's a very wide angle. Incorrectly done or not, wide angles create noticeable distortion that looks unnatural to humans. Our cone of (clear) vision is relatively narrow, about 60 degrees. Anything outside 60 degrees is entering peripheral territory and usually we aren't very conscious of it.

To put it simply, wide shots are kind of like looking at two places at once. Or like stitching two images together. For a human to take in this entire scene, standing at the same distance, he'd have to scan it up and down. He wouldn't see all of that at once. If you ever see a super distorted photo, crop into the center of it, or any small portion of it. The part will look more natural than the whole because it's closer to a human COV.

Perspective is fascinating when you stop thinking of it as a tool to draw little gingerbread houses and actually consider its implications. It's a deep rabbit whole. Study the concept behind the convenience (lines and vanishing points) and it'll make you a more analytical artist.

Yeah me too. We have younger people actually trying to experiment with anime depth of view and backgrounds. They're too ahead of our time to be appreciated for what they're doing. The studio who made K project is a good example of warpy backgrounds but at 60FPS. Again, ahead of our time.

I take back what I said, it's nothing like Asura (just gave me first initial vibes). Wow, what a hot pocket of garbage. Why did they make the mechs so miniature? I could not take the entire thing seriously because of that. And their expressions look so angry--what a waste of Re Zero's character designers signature. And they probably said the word "NANI?!" like 50 times in total.

The backstory was this "hey guys we're super deep Egyptian history"--oh boy where have I seen this before? Magic that once was abundant in the world? What anime have I seen that from??? And then the MC girl goes from 1 to 100 real quick for no reason with uber strong ability.

It could be watchable trash if all they did was make the mechs full scale. Because they did one thing right and that's not using CGI for the mechs. But I can't even call those tiny little pieces of shit "mechs" just who is this marketed to?

Main culprit is the fact that LVP/RVP are too close, which starts a chain reaction of the GSP being too close, which makes the COV too small for the frame. Things on the right side are not drawn to proportion. If you were there in real life, it would be one of those visual tricks where everything looks kind of correct when viewed from a certain angle, but if you take a step in any direction everything gets freaky.

Secondly, the frame is off center, which couples with the small cone of vision to distort things even more.

I haven't seen the show, but all of this is definitely deliberate. Characters are closest to the cone of vision, which also grounds the viewer's attention to the area least distorted. Everything to the right is absolutely fucked purposefully. That far counter is a perfect square for example. If the fore counter were the same size relative to perspective proportions, it would veer off to the right about double the length of the frame, yet it looks like it ends a little bit off frame. That sink shouldn't even be in frame.
