It's meant to be an oil painting book. It's alright, it's basically do still life paintings of simple to gradually more complex objects using different color lights and construction paper in a box. You're never gonna do the studies anyway. You might as well just do still life paintings in your house now. The gist is to work from simple color block statements to more complex, however you wipe away/paint over each previous layer. So very not good for gouache because you'll reactivate the paint. The tiling method is good though but you don't need that book to teach you.

The series jumps around quite a bit, and a lot of it is dedicated to tips and tricks from before the Dark Age of Technology that aren't very applicable if you work digitally - but I don't, which probably explains my predilection for having paper books on a shelf here instead of relying solely on digital copies.

The Antarctic Press books aren't that good, but I have a soft spot for Ben Dunn, who's also from Texas. A lot of what's in those is from the other artists who were in Antarctic's stable at the time, and it's quite outdated.

From the "How to Draw Manga" series, I'm particular fond of the Giant Robots, Mechanical Drawing, and the Bishoujo * Pretty Gals books, but the others kinda run together. There are some books in the series that are useless to me, like the Pen & Tone Techniques book and Making Anime, but I flip through them before I buy them and don't take them home if they don't have enough useful stuff in them.

Hmmm... that's tough. Shirow is my absolute favourite. Other artists from around the same time have *some* elements of style in common with him, but I don't know how much it would appeal to you.

I also like Hayao Miyazaki. Yes, *that* Miyazaki. He's mostly famous for directing films these days, but if you've read the Nausicaa manga, or see his drawings for Porco Rosso and Laputa, you might get what I like about him. I still think Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro is the best animated movie ever made.

Kenichi Sonoda designed the human characters for the original Bubblegum Crisis, and created Gunsmith Cats and its spin-off, Riding Bean.

Kia Asamiya is probably best known - if anybody on this board remembers it - for Silent Möbius. He also drew the manga adaption for the live-action movie Gunhed, and did some work for the Japanese version of Battletech (as did Sonoda).

There's Johji Manabe, who drew Outlanders and Thunder Jet Rai. He described his own work as "beautiful girls with swords." There's quite a bit ofr Outlanders stuff out there, but ... well, there's a lot of stuff out there, and not as much time to read any more.

Finally, how about Shuuhou Itahashi? His one big shot was Ai City, was animated in the late 80's. He also illustrated a fantastic Alice-in-Wonderland-esque manga called Cyber 7, but the company that was translating it into English never finished it, and nobody else on the Internet besides me seems to remember anything else about it.

it's between loomis and bridgman. loomis's construction/form breakdown is almost too simple to really be useful. Bridgman's is god-tier, but he's super granular and it takes a lot of time and copying the illustrations to grasp the way he uses line to express forms. There's too much info in Bridgman's illustrations for an amateur to memorize out the gate.

Hampton is basically right in between those two. Not super expensive either IMO, glad I bought it. If you do though, buy constructive anatomy by bridgman, because fuck it, it's only like 8 dollary-doos and will be a great supplement.

A good book. The newest edition has more information than the edition floating around the net. I feel the extra information helps out quite a bit and smooths out some things that were a little vague in the original book.

For example, the chapter of the arm anatomy is expanded with examples as well as terms that were previously left undefined such as suppination and ulnation. The original book mentioned them when hampton was talking about the bones in the forearm but never bothered to differentiate which was which. (i am also open to the idea i may have missed it but i distinctly remember needing to look it up on google)

I wasn't familiar with the name, so I googled it. Most of his work comes after the period we're talking about, except for a few gems. I have Robot Carnival on VHS, and I remember "Presence" well.

Lily C.A.T. I've never watched, but I remember seeing advertisements for in magazines, and Megazone 23 Part II made it to the theaters here many decades ago. Most of the artwork for Megazone (first and second parts) that I'm familiar with was done by other artists, though, including HAL (>>4024098).

Hey y'all, I've been looking for this art book(colorized manga style) for awhile now, here is what I remember:

-cover with blond girl(long hair, probably twin tails) with feathers dropping down

- one page I remember where a guy was working on a car, or probably just a car with the hood open up.

-another character in it, clothes all black but he had this ability to turn into other animalistic being, either that or he summoned them.

-page where a girl is naked with a loose transparent cloth, I believe she was posing for art.

- range of the date of the book would be about lates 90s early 00s.

You can use Poppler's pdfimages application for this. Here's a Windows binary release:

Usage is as follows.

I don't think it's gonna be that helpful to anyone really. Everyone already knows his methods and there's a bunch of videos on youtube where he does whiteboard drawings that showcase his thought process when drawing. It's easy to "know" how he draws or what techniques he uses, the hard part is actually putting in the work and getting the years and years of mileage needed to utilize that knowledge effectively.

When I first saw his videos it fundamentally changed the way I thought about drawing, this was after looking at Proko and all of the other YT artists who were on the scene at the time. They just don't have what these asian artists seem to have in terms of information and ability, just watching KJG draw is educational for me and visually improves my art -- I think it'll definitely be worth it, I'd buy it but I'm a broke college student.
