i noticed things with soul (left) have charming/pragmatic stylistic decisions and are overall less hypercritical and fun whereas soulless things (right of course) seem to have been beaten into conformity through artistic inbreeding. The soulless one looks like a bunch of pinterest anime references slapped together by someone who can't afford to look bad, and left looks like it was made by someone who actively daydreams about the source material and in general is having a good time and doesnt give a shit (in a good way).

well for tropical hiking you should usually wear such pants to ensure optimal body temperature/hydration, as well as prevent critters and poisonous plants to get in contact with your body. Plus such clothes are usually designed with materials for cooldry/water resistance meaning they are very thin and dry almost instantly or prevent water like rain/condensation to seep in from outside which otherwise could potentially lead to hypothermia. Furthermore the pants and boots imply that this has some pseudo swimming or diving capabilities, which fits the tropical theme. That being said, the mc on the right would probably already be dead somewhere in the jungle.

So idk, I'd rather trust a veteran artist who's done his homework, than some tumblarian who opened the next best summer outfits magazine.

That's right. I went looking for some more Soul vs Soulless images and I noticed they're real... and it's almost the same as Old good New Bad. Because companies suck nowadays, most of them anyway.
Things become soulless when they become streamlined so they can be easily replicated or mass produced. It's all the little details that make something like natural or organic that are missing in Soulless drawings. From the rendering to features that look like they were copied from a Pinterest model sheet like some other anon said and making everything rounder and cleaner.

That's it and I fucking hate it. Soemehow a ton of modern art seems to be aiming for ultra clean looks. Just compare the old powerpuff girls against the newer ones.

Here's a tough reality for you, when Sonic the Hedgehog was being designed, the concept artists weren't looking for something "they would love to see themselves in a movie/drawing/game". They literally just designed something to be popular, so they made a cereal mascot/saturday morning cartoon talking animal, because that's what children's media consisted of during the time.
They all liked eggman's design better and he was originally going to be the main protagonist but they turned him into a villain because Sonic appealed more to the market.
I'm not saying any of this to devalue artists, I'm saying this because all of you devalue artists, you immediately dismiss them because "eww they're new".

Left one was a seasoned artist who obviously knows humans don't have monkey arms yet he left them like that because he thought she looked cute with long arms and big hands. Always take the advice at hearth, anons here are good people. But you need to JUDGE YOURSELF if you really like the result. For example one of the best anons at /beg/ once redlined a Jeanne D'Alter to make her more anatomically correct not knowing he was changing her face too much and she no longer looked like Jeanne. Good intentions but not everyone produces the same kind of art. If you listened to him for example you'd end up making a great Wonder Woman but wondering why Fate fans hate your art.

I gotchu senpai, I'll explain my observation of this;
It's all in the pose of the character on the left compared to the pose of the one on the right.
On the left you have the character drawn in the pose of a contrapposto whereas the right one is attempting the same pose but the artist went for a pidgeon toe look for extra perceived cuteness. But it actually fucked the drawing up because with the slimmer legs and the curvature of the calves, the pidgeon toes makes the legs look like cooked noodles.

We're at the point where if you like anything about gen 1 at all, you're labeled a genwunner. Hell, if you say ANYTHING about a non-gen 1 game, you're a genwunner.

But yes, Sugimori's old traditional work is my favorite stuff from him. The textures, unique angular style, and emotion it conveys screams soul. It sucks that the style was dropped for a more generic, safe style.

I love how grubby and wierd the old digimon art looks, some of the newer illustrations just look too crisp and clean. I like Pokemon illustrations that look slick and clean, I like Digimon illustrations that look rough and scraggly.
