People compare new things to what they know, and if they want to compliment it, to the things they like. Somebody who's only ever seen old Disney movies and goes to see anime for the first time, is going to look for similarities. If he likes one he might say that it's just like his favorite Disney movie. Even if this is not the case in a literal sense. It's normal. An old teacher of mine looked at my drawings and saw an elf, he pointed and smiled at me and said ''Tolkien''. It would be ridiculous of me to get offended at that.

Now when somebody is implying you are a hack or something that's another matter entirely, it'd be even more infuriating if you've never heard of the thing they insinuate you copied. But I think that doesn't happen often

Ha, have the same "problem". Created spunky female lead a few years ago. Now that I'm actually working the project it's suddenly an agenda. At least this might actually benefit the marketing side of things.
The main problem I faced in creating her was to find the right amount of bold/proactive/endearing before she becomes annoying (,but I think the same goes for male leads as well). If you ask me you should handle female leads just like males with personal goals, individual fields of competence and distinctice personality traits. Of course there are gender differences, but they shouldn't be the main focus and instead play into the character traits

Honestly you should get your OC out there, it's probably a good thing. I get the impression the mainstream media thinks "strong character" means "without real flaws", instead of simply a well rounded character

Take ANY character and you'll find at least one that is somewhat similar. We like to catalogue things and make sense of our surroundings. If you're smart, you're using archetypes and similarities to further communicate your design.
So if people say your character reminds them of X, use it as a pitch. Or, if this is not at all the direction you wanted to go in, think about how to change the design for the better

You are going to get this and the sooner you come to peace with it, the better off you will be.

I developed actual OCD tics over my character being anything like something popular - light green skin? Can't have that because of Beast Boy, Murdoc from Gorillaz, Ace from Gangrene Gang, etc. But green evokes certain aesthetics in us - youthful vigor, a scheming attitude.
Archetypes exist, look at the book The Hero with A Thousand Faces. There are character design principles that exist because they play on symbols that mean something to us.

There is nothing cool you have taken inspiration from that some other person hasn't also been touched by - be it animal, landscape, or fictional character. Shit, you probably have characters that share similiarities with those of your friends because you and your friends share interests. If you didn't share interests, shit, you wouldn't be friends!

My advice is also to stay far, far away from DONUTSTEEL type people. If you have 'friends' that are always tearing you down for ripping them off, get away from them. These are the same types as the adults who would bully children off of DeviantArt for having a fursona with the same species and fur color as them. They will make you paranoid, they will hamstring you.

Keep creating, who gives a fuck. Remember the child you that was happy drawing a recolor of a Digimon you loves? Find him again. Find him and fuse him with the adult you, who is wiser and has more experience to reiterate on those ideas.
