Looking good so far. You could push your blacks I guess more but maybe they are not finished yet. I would personally make the lips of the girl not as wide. You could push a bit more intricate details on certain parts of the mech, but I always miss that myself.

>>3994563>>3996455
The arms proportions don't match between them at first glance. Unless the character has that kind of body deformation.
I personally think doing shape design like that is a nice challenge. On another note, you may want to break the space on the silhouette so it reads more clearly, for example pushing the hands doing the action, out from the body. It's not a requirement but it can help readability.

he means stop acting like your mistakes were something you were able to control yet were simultaneously too lazy to correct yourself. this demeanor paired with asking others to do your work for you is laughable.

>>3999486
theres lots to be done. the background is one flat color, as is the hair, as is the cloth on her breasts. think about the form instead of thinking about placing values if that makes any sense. her neck and trap have no difference in depth, and similarly if the breasts didnt have the line indicating cleavage, it would look very formless. try hiding your linework layer to see what i mean.

well, what's the point of this thread then? you could just study everything by yourself, but oftentimes others are more efficient at pointing out mistakes or where one could improve ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

>> No.3999571

>>3999514
im assuming you just wanted someone to fix your anatomy since you had no way of knowing what was correct from your reference.
that is perfectly reasonable but the complaint comes from prefacing your work with 'im too lazy to look up anatomy books rn' and 'my ref was bad.' this is telling that youre either making excuses for the quality of your work or that you could have done better if you wanted. in the first situation, it is pretending or coping that nobody cares to hear, and in the second, there is no reason to give critique. just letting you know for future reference: whether or not you mean it, people will see those expressions as excuses, and they wont want to help you

if you still want some critique:
these angles do not follow the reference's perspective or pose.. check them over and over again.
your lines arent helping you out in any way apart from looking a bit comic-like with the veins and edges. even when they do its almost as if it were unintentional because of how sloppy it gets in certain areas.. try a bigger brush size since you need to work on perspective and creating forms.
sloppy hands, sloppy lips, and sloppy hair.. guessing you need to study those independently.
anatomy errors in the torso and the groin especially.. there is almost no ribbing in the lat, and the serratus muscles go forward from it-- not backwards into it. also, the nipples are shooting straight forward
finally, tiny balls as someone said

>>3999508
ive been doing stuff from imagination too, and it really helps to not use linework while painting. i use a 100% opacity brush and think about the planes that create the form. i practice the same way from references.

I think it's mostly a composition issue.
Right now, it feels a bit boxed in, like a really close shot of something that's supposed to be large scaly.

Perhaps try to open up the scene a bit and let it breathe, give a feeling that there's a lot of space outside the main scene. Here's a shitty edit to illustrate the point.

Thanks, I guess one of the most important rules of composition is that empty space has as much significance as the rest of the composition.

You have to have some kind of space that your main subject occupies, not everything has to be a focal point. Let the eye wander a bit.

I block in basic forms first like the chest, the head, limbs, etc. using midtones. I don't typically do a line sketch because my lines are always really bad and painting over them is a pain.
Then I start rendering the forms, adding details as I go, starting with midtones, then shadows, then highlights.
I paint everything in one layer, or add something in another layer and merge it after when I'm done with it. For example if I were to add color or clothes, I would do it in a separate layer, and once satisfied, I would merge it with the rest.
The final thing I do is adjustments like color correction or value adjustment.

Pic related is something else I did earlier today, but that time I started with colors instead of grayscale. I've started doing grayscale because as you can see, my values are pretty bad. I also know I'm god-awful at doing hair. However, I know that there are other things that I'm bad at that I'm not aware of, hence posting looking for critique.

Thanks for pointing out the proportion problems, I fixed them quick and dirty while figuring out the color stuff.
I have to admit, I don't know how to draw.
I took painting classes, where we were taught to lay down the forms with large shapes and silhouettes. Drawing is some arcane abstract stuff to me. I mean, lines don't even exist IRL, you have to describe an object by separating its forms with contour lines of varying thicknesses, overlaps, and they have to describe the shading, form, perspective, all at once? Too hard. Fat blobs of shapes is a lot easier to deal with.

There is no shadow beneath the fingers which makes them appear floating. There should be pretty sharp cast shadows on the face under each finger. There are no indentations on the skin where the fingers land. That nose ridge is wonky and lacking form. It's also the area that the eyes are most drawn to, so fix that. Areas of the face like the chin and jawline appear too small and flat. Lastly, the fingers are lacking in detail like the wrinkles in where they bend.

As a profession, yes. I don't know the scene on small galleries, but I would imagine it's not a very viable option to make a living. Maybe your stuff could be big if you were a woman of color.

I know it's a stylistic choice, and I said this before, you like to do a bunch of abstractions, add random doodles to make your art looser or more organic, but you don't have a good sense for shapes, color or composition.

I also know you do this because you don't like to have your work compared with any other painter, you want your style to be unique, but I think there's a bigger reason for your stuff to be the way they are:

You are too impatient/lazy to think about the lines you're placing down. There are always points in your drawing where you are intently drawing your lines and then places where you clearly say fuck it and let your hands do whatever. For example, please walk me through your design decisions for that left hand.

-

So to sum it up: You just want to draw whatever, you feel you're too good to draw what people want to buy instead of just doing what you want to do, and you don't run in the right circles that would appreciate and pay for that (and that made ugly painters before you successful). Nothing wrong in doing it as a hobby though.

Define better. I could paint the Sistine Chapel from memory if I really wanted to. Thanks a lot for the feedback, I see what you mean. What I was trying to do with that arm stretching from the bottom to the top of the screen was to show the transition from a more realistic style to a stylized cartoony one as it gets closer to the knight's head. So, the other hand was there to emphasize the more realistic style, because I wanted the pose to feel more kung fu-ish instead of just a punch... and also I was trying to make the whole thing more interesting.

Seems like I failed a bunch. Anyway, thanks again for the input!

I would say, if you don't know what to do with this just leave it as is. Tacking on a background behind a random character isn't really a good idea, the character feels stiff and out of place.

If you insist on doing something with it, you could just render him and do a simple background just to showcase him better.

awe does it? Mine was based off a dream I had, a knight with almost spruce colored armor with a heavy red fur over his back. I guess I just absorbed it from seeing other stuff and my subconscious put it together.

I was definitely thinking of a soft, subtle background that didn't distract from the character, yet helped tell a story or gave information about him. I like the second image you linked. Maybe I could do something like that.

I just felt like adding a bunch of detail to a character in a void would be less interesting.

Yeah, which is fine, but you paint illustrations in perspective that’s usually reserved for fine arts. Nothing squashes or stretches to emphasize motion or comes out at the viewer. And that’s not even to say your work should be Final Destination 3d, cause there’s subtle ways to apply perspective to have things recede slowly away or to the side

i like it too. a flail is a surprisingly deadly weapon with little force needed for the damage output.

this is kind of weird but I used to attend this after-school program at a local park when I was young, it was pretty much just a daycare for kids who's parents were working when school was out.

one of the guys working at the park also managed this LARP group that would come around every Tuesday and dress up as knights and beat the shit out of each other.

the guy liked to make improvised weapons and one day demonstrated how quickly and easily a flail can be made. He took a light length of aluminum chain and a softball, and wrapped the ball in duct tape to the chain. It took less than 3 minutes to put together. he smashed a watermelon to bits in a single swing, dented the hood of his car, and knocked the cage-visor off a football helmet. kinda crazy
