why even try to learn fundies and develop personal style when tracing+realism gets 20k upvotes on r/art

If a sub has over 100k subscribers, it's a shit hole, let alone 15m on r/art.

Upvotes isn't money, or coming out with a product, or anything other than imaginary internet points.
Also that doesn't look traced, just referenced. Not even that heavily referenced since there's a fair bit where they've played fast and loose with the naturalistic rendering involved.

NGMI if you're a karma whore who's only motivation is gain. Use r/art as a critique and maybe as an ego boost every now and then, but if you give strangers on the internet that much power over you. you're only destined to give up

Because the accounts don't monitise.
You can buy instagram accounts on flippa that have 120k followers and only bring 300 a month after spamming product placements.
We are after $$ not whatever delusions OP's pic's author has.

Eh, not entirely true. I had a few posts make the front page of r/art, r/pics, r/gaming, and other smaller subs, and on each occasion ended up with new sales, clients etc.

I remember my first successful post on r/art (a set of watercolor landscapes) got me close to $500 in print sales, and my most recent one got me my first job as a hopeful concept artist ($900 for a few environment paintings) and a bunch of messages from other people who also wanted to hire me (which lead to nothing because they all needed something that I didn't think I could deliver for them, but still).

I also know of a couple people who landed jobs with Wizards of the Coast and some other big name company because their post hit the front page.

Just as with likes on Instagram, upvotes don't mean anything on their own, but get enough of them and suddenly your work will be in front of hundreds of thousands of eyes, which more often than not leads to good things.

Oh I agree, though to be fair the watercolor one was from over a year ago not long after I started learning how to draw/paint, while the environment is from a month or so ago.

I think a lot of people tend to upvote pieces that they feel they could make too with some practice. Also that kind of minimalist watercolor art is much easier to sell because it can appeal to a wider audience.

And of course you have the bandwagoning/snowballing, once something starts to gain popularity many people will just like/upvote it *because* of its popularity, and once it gets in front of hundreds of thousands of eyes it's bound to just keep getting more and more votes.

By tracing he meant it's a photorealistic drawing that's copied from a photo which doesn't require you to know fundamentals.

I like the more minimalistic one anon. The more detailed one looks like concept art for a video game. The second one is more of a neutral design that you would actually hang up on your wall.
